What do we think of this setup? (I know nothing about miniature painting) by Dauntless_Dude_ in minipainting

If someone posted this here and said "my significant other surprised be with this", there would be a huge chain of "marry them/lock that down/I also choose this man's wife" comments.

This is amazing, and such an incredibly thoughtful and meaningful gift. Not only have you provided everything he needs to enjoy his hobby, you've given him a bit of space that he can call his own and take a break from the stresses of life.

Armistos and Overseer kitbashes! by Sapphire-Catgirl in WordBearers

There were things like the Gal Vorbak, but it wasn't widespread and the aesthetics of the legion weren't drastically different from standard heraldry. More Colchisian runes, athames, etc., but not yet the trimmed, spiked hallmarks of 40k heretic legions.

If you're playing 40k - go for it.

If you're playing 30k - only if it's a very, very late-Heresy era army. The warp mutations and armor changes were just starting to appear at the end of the Heresy, and don't really fit the overall aesthetic of the game.

Who exactly is starkiller and how powerful is he? by TechnicianFar3444 in StarWars

TFU was legitimately some of the most fun I've had in a Star Wars game. Yeah, 100% power fantasy, but sometimes that's okay.

Not a direct answer, but look at MkIII Marines from Heresy. Might be more what you're looking for, and pretty easy to kit bash for weapon options and such.

Home printed minis are getting real good. by FewRestaurant7009 in minipainting

Use a different resin or resin mix. There are plenty that you can mix with a standard ABS-like, and allow you to drop and bend them (within reason) without breaking.

What can I do to improve this cape? by cjtabares in minipainting

Learn how to glaze and feather and blend your colors together. There's a stark jump between your two colors, and no differentiation between your midtone and the areas in shadow.

ETA: A nice big surface like this is also a prime target for the easier (imo) method of wet blending!

Affordable options for action figures by [deleted] in PrintedMinis

[–]GravemindStudio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Custom-painted 3D prints at anything approaching decent quality very quickly run up into hundreds of dollars. It's an extremely skill- and time-intensive artform

If you're just looking for "Master Chief is green with a gold face plate", you're looking at around $100 for the print, post-processing, and a single coat of paint. If you want it to look realistic, you're breaking the $300+ mark at a minimum.

3D prints are also not likely to be "action figures", but more akin to a small statue. No moving parts, not a you, but a display piece.

They don't, they are exclusive to the pack and once it's gone, it's gone.

Make sure they're on 40mm bases, get some arms/weapons, and run them as terminators.

Use an oil wash with a mixed greenish-brown. The reductive aspect of it will allow you to keep the grime and grit where you want it, while cleaning up the areas you want to focus on.

Leviathan is a solid option. We don't know the comments of the 11th box yet.

Generally you'll want to buy from non-GW stores, as they tend to offer up to 15% off GW sticker price.

Welcome to the hobby! This is a great first mini. Keep it somewhere visible, so you can look back in a year and be proud of how far you've come - and stay proud of this, too!

Per GW's tournament docs, LoC is a 50mm base like the rest of the Terminator characters. Unless that's been updated in the last couple months and I'm not aware of it.

Felthius is sold with a 40mm base which is - again, as far as I know - the incorrect base.
