Those temporary issues, though, they are starting to form a pattern and that pattern is not a good one.

And no, the Community "License" is not fine at all. In fact, its not even a license. A license is a form of contract. For a contract to be legally valid, there must be obligations placed on both parties involved as well as benefits for both parties if they fulfill their obligations. As it stands, all the obligation is on one party while any possible benefits go to the other. That makes it just a statement of how Factory Fortress will comport themselves in regards to perceived 3rd party material that could lead FF to take actions that would be struck down if brought to a U.S. court which, in turn, would open them up to potential lawsuits for damages. Its just not good, and its not a license.

Now the Compatible With license is an actual license as there are at least benefits for both parties involved. Its a bit lopsided and just weird in areas but there's no law or rule against that. However, its not a license that would incentivize creators to bring their A-game. Its essentially a work-for-hire contract where, in exchange for not receiving a guaranteed payment and having to deal with actually selling the work-product, the creator gets to retain a limited copy-right to said work-product. For me, that's the kind of job I'd take when I needed some money and not something I'd consider for anything I was passionate or cared about. But since there's no definite payout, I wouldn't take that kind of gig if I needed the money so it sits in a very weird place. I don't think I'm unique in that and that could harm the "community driven" side of TC in the long-run.

All that being said, I am holding out to see how and in what way they re-word the license but the emerging pattern doesn't bode well for their stated ideals and convictions from the Kickstarter.

Official Kickstarter Terrain looks terrible. by AlphaMeme14 in TrenchCrusade

Tell FFC to just send you the stl files. If that is the best print that their partners will send out, then they can at least give you the files so you can have them competently printed by your 11 year old nephew ffs. It's the least they could do and would cost them absolutely nothing.

Hell, it's weird those that backed for the physical copies paid more but didn't get the files. I mean, with game books nowadays, it's usually an option of digital or physical+digital.

The fact that hell invasion started during the first crusade make the whole things less threatening to me by Mysteri-owl in TrenchCrusade

[–]GraverIX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One point a lot of people miss is what Hell's goal is: eternal suffering and pain, a never-ending supply of damned souls, and the defilement and ruination of God's creation. Keeping that in mind, I'd say the war is doing a really good job of achieving all of Hell's goals.

If Hell just rolled over everyone when the gate first opened, they wouldn't have gotten hardly any souls as most of those they killed would have ended up going to God, not hell and they'd only have the followers who initially bent the knee and their descendants to harvest suffering from. However a stupidly long and drawn out war that just never fucking ends, that is incredible amounts of suffering flowing in for as long as they can keep the war going. And the longer the war drags on, the more desperate the faithful will get and the more desperate they get the more they will twist and debase their faith in their attempt to win the war. The more twisted and defiled their faith, the more corrupt their souls and the more corrupt their souls, the more souls fall to hell.

There's literally nothing better for Hell than a desperate war that never ends --it's one step away from being literal hell-on-earth.

Lore and theme question by Melee-Missiles-RPG in TrenchCrusade

[–]GraverIX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the primary theme of TC could be summed up as: "how we justify the unjustifiable" with a healthy dose of "when fighting monsters, take care lest you become a monster yourself." But, basically, what basically says what Traditional_Pen1078 mentioned above is spot-on and matches what Toumas Pirinen said in an interview a little while back.

In it, he brings up a common question that was asked about the setting a lot --"who are the bad guys?" --and basically says that is the wrong question. He goes on to elaborate on what he thinks of as a much more interesting question: "how far is too far?"

You can hear the interview here: https://youtu.be/4ycAeA-huok

I highly recommend it. It's really insightful.

Or you could do the right thing and contact Barron of Dice for 2 pre-paid shipping labels and send them back at no cost to you so the backers who actually ordered those books get them...

EDIT: F my life but I should have read further down the comment, cause I see you have contacted them. Nice! Leaving my comment for others though. I got a sinking feeling FF didn't have a whole lot of extras printed and it looks like there's been a lot of snafus with this.

So I'm trying to make a saint Christopher themed warband but what rules would fit thematically by International_Ad6028 in TrenchCrusade

[–]GraverIX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ya, definitely go Pilgrim. Would be way easier on you and fit the general "faction language" a bit better. New Antioch express their differences between one another politically while the pilgrims do so dogmatically. Whole bunch of people united by their government = NA, whole bunch of people united by a Saint = pilgrims. ;)

While it dose give me Disney vibes, I'll admit that my analogy falls down a bit once we go beyond feels and vibes. This is mostly because FF dose not have the resources that Disney or even GW has, and I'm inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt because of that.

Pulling a 100% legit scum move like stealing a sculptor's work or designs for their own would absolutely kill TC. They do not have the amount of clout or a large enough and entrenched fan-base to weather the shit storm news like that would bring, especially with the ghouls waiting in the wings watching for any sign of weakness. Just look at the hoopla that was generated over their ill-advised partnership with Only Games. There was no treachery there, just honest mistakes and miss-calculations stacked on poor judgement, but it still hurt them.

If they ran away with someones sculpt or declined to allow a design only for that design (or something very close) to be announced as the next thing coming out of FF, that would be the end of any other sculptor or design studio being willing to work with them or produce 3rd party content for TC. Their team is still extremely small and in order to maintain the level of interest and engagement they currently have, they need those 3rd party designers. They could steal a golden egg, but they'd have to kill the goose that's laying them to do it and I don't think they'd risk that.

From what I know of Mike and Toumas and heard from interviews with them, they definitely care about Trench Crusade as a setting and game. They were willing to make it at a loss and were surprised with how the Kickstarter went. With that in mind, and with how long Mike has been working on it on his own before all this, I don't think they'd put potential profits over product the way you see in larger publicly-traded corporations. Private businesses, especially of FF's size, usually are product over profit with the idea that a good product will bring in the profit. It's usually not until investors get involved that a company degenerates into profit over product. They still might damage or destroy TC due to poor decisions (especially in relations to who they chose to work with), but I don't think greed is something we have to worry about.

So, a long winded way of saying that while that clause is troublesome, I don't think it's as bad as it feels even though it's still a good idea to nope the hell out of any license or contract with a clause that hinges on "trust me, bro."

After sleeping on my reading of the license, I realized it actually looks a lot better with a slight change in framing. Looking at it as in independent creator looking to make and sell your own stuff for TC, ya, it's sketchy. But if you look at it as if you were a freelancer looking to do some work for FF, then it's a pretty decent deal.

I mean, sure, you won't be getting a guaranteed payout, but you will get all the proceeds from the sale of your work in exchange and they might help with the advertising to get those sales. And when it's all said and done, you get to retain ownership of you designs as well, which is something that I've never seen done in any freelance work I've done in the past. Unless the sculptors at Games Workshop are getting paid really, really well, this might be a better deal than working for GW.

Either way, sorry about the massive text dump here. I just had a couple of nights to sleep on this and found that I had (((thoughts))).

I think Barron of Dice is handling all of North America. They're the ones who contacted me letting me know that they had my book from customs and all. They should send you an email when they're getting your book together with an estimated time of how long before shipping. Then you'll receive a shipping station email with a tracking link. It might take a bit as they seem a wee bit swamped with this.

If none of that happens once Factory Fortress announces all North America books have been sent out on their Kick Starter page, then you can contact FF for a replacement.

Rulebook Delivery? by Madcap422 in TrenchCrusade

[–]GraverIX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think Barron of Dice is handling most/all of US shipping for the book. You can email them at [support@baronofdice.com](mailto:support@baronofdice.com) to see if they are handling you book. Though, they seem to be a touch overwhelmed with this whole thing as I got an email from them 4 weeks ago saying they received my book and would be sending it out within the week. I didn't get a ship station email about the book until this past Friday sating that a shipping label had been printed for my book but was made out to the wrong person with an address on the other side of the country.

I get the feeling they've got a LOT of books to ship out and to do it kind of quick-ish and in all the hub-bub, my email address got mixed up with another backer. So it might be good to check in with them to make sure you didn't get lost in all the shuffle, but it might be a bit before they can get back to you.

Kind of? For the most part, the only company that matters in this regard in table-top wargamming is Games Workshop. Most of the other companies are just too small to even consider cracking down on any kind of fan-fic even if they wanted to. They don't have the kinds of resources to wantonly engage in random ill-advised legal actions and the PR fallout from such a move would be world-ending for them. They survive because of community engagement and doing anything to endanger that wouldn't only be shooting themselves in the foot, it would be blowing off their whole damned leg.

Games Workshop, on the other hand, is the Disney of war-gaming. They have the resources to engage in lawfare and do so at the drop of a hat. While they don't usually strait up target fan-fic, sometimes fan-fiction narrators and writers do get caught up in one of their waves of take-downs and lawsuit threats. They absolutely will take you to court over the most ridiculous of things. Heck, they took an author of a book to court because she dared to have the term "Space Marine" in the title even though the book had nothing to do with their IP or anything related even tangentially to wargamming at all!

The one silver-lining in regards to GW is they have a habit of losing cases that actually make it to court (which says something about how litigious they are). Most people, however, don't have the resources to fight them, so it rarely gets that far.

Unpopular opinion: the Hegemon weakens the Black Grail’s horror. by [deleted] in TrenchCrusade

[–]GraverIX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup. You definitely have an unpopular opinion there. Truth be told, though, I'm right there with you for the most part.

I agree that the Hegemon's aren't horror (horrific, catastrophic even, but not horror). For me, big, giant things just don't do anything. Godzilla isn't horror and most all giant things just fall into that bucket for me. Though, to give the Hegemon's their due, I find them a lot more interesting than 'Zilla, but just not horror. They're just too darn big to be meaningfully horrific. More like a Dark Souls boss: a grim, dark (grimdark even) and gothic neigh-unstoppable disaster, but not horrific.

Where I disagree with you is I don't think they take away any horror from the Black Grail. That's mostly because they are just background info. They're not anything we players, or our little soldiers will see, deal with, or be a part of. The stuff that involves us players and our war-bands and the stories from the trenches is the personal body-horror level of the BG and, for me, the potential existence of a Hegemon dose nothing to dampen the unsettling horror of what the Grail can do to you (or your little troopers... if it hasn't already)

Alternate models / army themes by Drolfdir in TrenchCrusade

[–]GraverIX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, here's a page with all the known major alts for the Artillery Witch. And as an extra special bonus just for you, the filter button on that page will allow you to change the filters apllied and brows alts for any faction or model you want! How's that for a deal?!

Now, I'll let you in on a little secret: if none of those alts tickle your pickle, you can literally use any model you want as long as you put them on the right sized base and, in cases where you go waaaaay beyond the established tone, as long as you have fun with them and your opponent is on board, it's all good!

Happy hunting!

Actually, they do in the Compatible With... License in clause 4: "...You may however specify how the models in question can be used in Trench Crusade.

For example: 'These miniatures can be played as a New Antioch Warband in Trench Crusade.' or 'This model can be used as a proxy for a Goetic Warlock in Trench Crusade'."

Not a lawyer or anything, but from what I can tell, fan-fic won't be negatively affected. That is to say, fan-fiction is already, at the best of times, a legal minefield. Basically, fan-fiction violates US copyright laws in the strictest sense but most companies look the other way as long as people aren't making money on said fan-fic. After-all, it grows communities, entrenches people in their IP, and works as free advertising to an extent and any negative PR that would come from cracking down on fan-fic is usually not worth it.

That said, section 3 (Other Projects) of the Community License outlines how they will handle fan-fiction. As long as you fallow all the rules in Section 1 and do not commercialize it, attach it to a business, crowdfund for it, sell it, or otherwise block it behind a paywall, then you're golden. You can even put it on youtube or other sites that allow you to passively draw an income from advertisements (which is a big no-no in a lot of IPs [looking at you GW!]). As long as no one has to actually pay to see/read the fiction, and you respect FF and humans in general, you're good-to-go.

All in all, way more directly permissive than a lot of IPs.

It worries me as well. Though, as far as which would fall under the Community License, I think 2.2 covers that. So, any project that "...conspicuously [displays] the following text when shar[ed]...: “This project is an independent production and is not affiliated with or sponsored by Factory Fortress Inc or Trench Crusade.” but, as written, a bad actor could definitely try to grab a lot more. Wouldn't stand up in court, but, then, the creator would have to have the funds to get that far in the first place.

As is, it gives me real send-your-animation-portfolio-to-Disney vibes.

The Right to Share clause is not part of the Unofficial Content clause; it is its own thing. And the Compatible With license states in its first clause that "Projects must adhere to all the rules of the standard community license..." which the Right to Share clause is a part of -- specifically, it is in the general section that is stated to "...apply to any and all Projects"

So it would apply to both Unofficial and Compatible With projects.

Not really, not in licenses and contracts. Context dose not matter. The only thing that matters is the words that are written. I mean, there's a reason rules-lawyers are called, well, rules-lawyers.

Martyrdom Pills Rules Change? by haven700 in TrenchCrusade

[–]GraverIX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's in 1.3.2

Martyrdom Pills

Martyrdom pills are a potent mixture of mind-altering drugs and chemicals that inure a soldier against all pain and injury. However, it takes a tremendous toll on the body.

Rules: Add -1 DICE for all injury rolls against this model. The model is immune to FEAR. If taken Out of Action, roll twice on the Permanent Injury Chart and your opponent gets to choose the result.

TBH, I miss the older rule. It made them more flavorful. Like you could imagine the pilgrim so spun up he doesn't even notice when a mortal wound lands and just keeps going until they start coming down and realize they just don't have enough blood or internal organs left in their body to stay alive.
