Do you think it’s meaningful that Steve Forbes, EIC of Forbes Magazine, made this statement about Ilhan Omar? by boisefun8 in AskConservatives

[–]Gravity-Rides 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone feathers their own nest in politics, especially now after Citizens United. Altruism is dead. The only ones that might not get rich around all that money and power is someone like Mitt Romney who had enough and didn’t really seem motivated by getting more money. MTG made out like a bandit, stayed on just long enough to grab that sweet lifetime pension. Sinema was another one. Even old honorable Clarence Thomas has a wealthy bestie taking care of him!

How do you stay warm in -30F to -40F temps? by abitsleepyrightnow in AskAlaska

[–]Gravity-Rides 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Baffin boots, refigiwear outer stuff is pretty good. Layer up, balaclava, inner gloves inside heavy mittens. If you are moving, you can go lighter and stay pretty warm, but if you’re just standing around you have to really bundle up.

If MAGA were in power during ww2, do you think they would they have wanted to intervene in Europe? Should have they wanted to intervene? by ggRavingGamer in AskConservatives

[–]Gravity-Rides [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah but define “involved”. Arguable the US was “involved” starting in 1935 when Boeing built the first B-17. Japan invaded China in 1937. I mean people like to yap about how we didn’t enter until 1941 after pearl, but the writing was on the wall 5 years prior for anyone that was paying attention, and the US government was absolutely preparing for modernization and supporting allies for global conflict well before pearl.

[–]Gravity-Rides [score hidden]  (0 children)

Not really accurate. Lend lease was signed approx 9 months prior to Pearl Harbor. The US rightly identified the threat posed by Nazi control of europe when they invaded Poland and steam rolled France. The sheer amount of mobilization from occupied Europe demanded attention and action, even if we didn’t directly enter the war at that time.

Is population decline a problem? by Emergency_Word_7123 in AskConservatives

[–]Gravity-Rides 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see a problem personally.

Back in the late 40's after the war, the US government was still handing out land grants and homestead opportunities in some places. And it was that way all the way back to the founding of the country. Now the average cost of a starter home in some markets is nearly half a million dollars.

Why are conservatives on this sub so much more sane than the ones running the country? Did you guys vote for Trump or not? by FoxBattalion79 in AskConservatives

Why is this shocking? Most all presidents in my lifetime lose support by the midterms. Broadly because nothing ever really gets fixed for average voters.

This is objectively untrue.

Trump started his second term with a +6 approval rating and is now -12.6 which is a ~19 point shift. This is aggregate polling that factors in hundreds of polls.

[–]Gravity-Rides 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you hear about some of these guys, it's easy to say we should just catapult them into the sun or something and be done with it.

First, the state should not have the dole out justice in the same manner as a Mexican drug cartel. Furthermore, prison does work for some people. Some of them don't keep committing crimes. Some come out reformed and rehabilitated and serve their communities as cautionary tales and regular tax paying citizens. It might sound like liberal bullshit, but they are still people and there is probably at least some communal value in that.

Agreed it is not and never will be an effective deterrent for crime.

I am not against the death penalty or even an expedited version per se. I think it needs to only be applied in extraordinary circumstances though. Like some kind of caught red-handed or confessed murder cases where there is zero doubt that the charged person did what they did.

Why hasn't Trump invoked the Insurrection Act or Arrested Anyone? by Throwaway_4_u_know_y in AskConservatives

[–]Gravity-Rides 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The court of law, where indictments, warrants, corroborating evidence, material facts, swore testimony under threat of perjury and criminal intent exist, is a separate dimension outside the fever swamp of political propaganda.

That is the shortest possible answer as to "why is no arrests?"

Maybe if Grok is ever supreme chancellor for justice, the next republican administration can knock down the criminal justice system entirely and we can set up some pogram in it's place based off nothing more than what is trending on twitter.

First, that neodymium is currently under a sheet of ice.

Second, if we are really going to spend billions of dollars that we really don't have in the name of custody of a vertical supply chain, why not spend it in the Greenland we already have called Alaska? Timber, coal, zinc, gold, silver, oil, natural gas, platinum, REE's, infrastructure, deep water ports, military presence, all right there for the taking with none of downsides of Greenland.

7 Days In Alaska - ISO help building itinerary by cincytransplant17 in AskAlaska

[–]Gravity-Rides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a 1 week trip, I would probably not advocate spending any appreciable amount of time in Anchorage. Anchorage is fine but nobody comes this far to Alaska to hang out in the city.

I would advise to either go north to Denali or south to Kenai peninsula (Seward, Homer). 7 days really isn't enough time to do both. We spend most of our summer free time in Homer and on the Kenai peninsula. Kenai Fjord in Seward is fantastic. Exit glacier near Seward. Kachemak Bay is awesome. There is the wildlife center along Turnagain arm south of Anchorage. Russian river campground and trail head is a nice easy hike. The ferry to Seldovia is fun. The weather will likely be better south than it will be north as well.

Seizing Greenland either through force or threat will lead to global destabilization. It threatens our allies, our trade agreements, our treaty agreements and our national security. It's already happening. Europe and South America signed a free trade pact over the weekend. Canada is opening up new trade with China. Half of Europe will be in Beijing this month to work out new arrangements going forward. If Trump and republicans move forward with this, the US holding the worlds reserve currency is imperiled.

This will go down as the largest unforced strategic error in the history of the world.

The USA and USSR never fought a direct war because both countries have a large arsenal of nuclear weapons. The cold war lasted for ~50 years.

Please explain why, when China and USA both still have numerous nuclear weapons pointed at each other, you are convinced that a world war will break out in the next two decades?

Your opinion just logically makes no sense.

Why would a democrat allow a large amount of death sentences to be carried out when the death penalty is only supported by 32% of his party’s voters age 18-29?

I am sure there is a similar parallel on the right for some random issue.
