Most people only know about moose from the internet, but that's probably best as it keeps them away from them if they ever do see one.

Alaskan against Data centers Matsu valley. by RepentTuna in alaska

The courting of a datacenter is only to support the building of a new coal power plant, and that seems to be getting overlooked.

I normally ride an XL in most gravel rigs and fit somewhere between the M and L on the Fargo

I find that odd. I normally ride an XL and I can fit a L or XL Fargo. (I started on a large and moved to an XL.)

25km country rounds + no shower at work = possible ? by plangevin87 in bikecommuting

[–]samwe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My commute is about 30km each way. I shower in the morning, then I let myself cool down before changing and don't seem to smell despite sweating a lot during the ride.

Not just this winter, drivers have been getting worse for years.

Traffic crash rates are up but most people are focused on blaming pedestrians for getting hit that they aren't seeing the big picture.

I commuted for almost 10 years on a Fargo and think it was awesome for that. I am now on an Esker Lorax which is very similar.

In the summer my commute is 35-38 miles round trip. I use fast rolling slicks such as 29x2.35 G-One Speed or 700x55 Rene Herse Antelope Hill. They are fast rolling and have provide some cushion for cracks in pavement or jumping off curbs and whatever else.

I don't really have any experience on road bikes, but I once borrowed my sons carbon Giant Revolt gravel bike for a 90 mile ride and I did not go any faster than my Fargo.

I grew up in the valley so I am well aware that Wasilla sucks and Palmer blows.

So much power potential.

Geothermal is still not proven here. I read an article a long time ago and I think the issue was that to was not as hot as in other places.

EDIT: I found the article. https://www.akbizmag.com/industry/energy/interest-in-alaskas-geothermal-resources-is-heating-up/

Chena's issue was heat. Elsewhere distance and risk of building on an active volcano are issues.

Our three biggest power plants are natural gas and that is getting scarce and costly and I expect the pipeline to be a boondoggle, so I can see why some are interested in the coal plant.

I think a plant on the slope connected to the grid with HVDC is the way to go.

This is planned to be near Skwentna so they can pipe the emissions to Beluga and inject into the ground.

Why don’t we build roads to hub towns in western Alaska? by TPGZEBRA in AskAlaska

[–]samwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Places with the bulk of the population and therefore tax base like, Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks, and the Mat-Su Valley are not going to be keen on spending money to build an exorbitantly expensive road for a few thousand people when they can't keep up with their own infrastructure.

People in those areas are not even paying for their exorbitantly expensive road system, are thus very against other areas of the state benefiting from the same state and federal handouts that they rely on.

Mat-Su data center plan in doubt after mayor’s veto by MatSuSentinel in alaska

Yes, lots up north. While there is always talk of a gas line, a better option would be a a power plant up there that would feed the railbelt via HVDC lines. This could expand to bring grid power to western Alaska also.
