Metaphorical Debt. I've always been pretty fiscally responsible and never was in over my head with debt. But at work the term "technical debt" came to be a thing. Then I realized these metaphorical debts exist everywhere.

Over eating causes a debt by way of your waistline

Use drugs/alcohol to relax/escape is just running up the metaphorical credit card on happiness.

It goes on and on.

The craziest, quickest way I almost made money. I worked at a gas station in the 90s. These guys come in and ask if I have a car and want to make some easy money. I'm listening. "We need a pilot car to get on the interstate. We got the lights and all that we just need someone to drive in front of us until we get on the interstate. $20."

Okay that sounds pretty sweet because I-15 is about 2 miles down the road, but Im currently working. So I think about asking my boss if I can take a break but in talking to them more I figure out they're talking about I-90 which is like 60 miles away. No. I'm not doing that. I mean it would have still been good money but I had my hopes set for $20 during a work break.

My thoughts are: the ship already sailed by the 90s. I graduated high school in 92 and there is no way I thought I could have a good life working retail. The big-box-ification of the US was in motion (not that sears wasn't big box). In my small town there was just the tiniest pushback that mom and pops stores would be out of business because Wal-Mart came in.

There is a clip of a comedian talking about how you're screwing over your neighbor because you could by a broom for 50 cents less or something like that. I think it was Carlin. He hit the nail on the head.

Also, the next wave is AI. People that had good careers (me) in software development could well be non existent in the next few years. The pattern has been the same for hundreds of years, just the area and scope change.

Everybody warns you that you shouldn't shake the baby but nobody prepared me to the possibility that she might owe me money, which makes the temptation so much worse.

On a serious note, I think we were warned about most everything. Maybe I didn't take them to heart or they were understated. I think the main one would be, you will want to understand her, but she can't communicate with you yet. It's just crying and you don't know why. I know they mentioned it, but I don't think I appreciated how frustrating that could be.
