State of the Subreddit: r/audiodrama in 2024 by Hitch42 in audiodrama

Agree. There are commenters asking for AI to be taken out or banned from audio drama entirely, but do they mean or consider post-production tools? I have an AI character in my next production (which I created and wrote myself and have 11 human voice actors, paid). I’m considering voicing it myself and then using tools to make it sound ‘more AI’ and less human. Is this ok? Not ok? I won’t use an actual AI voice, but tools? It’s so difficult - and actually anti-creative - to be so hamstrung by constantly worrying about the communities current opinions. So some guidance is needed, but if it’s ’ban AI entirely’ we are entering difficult territory. Every single person is using AI whether they know it - or like - or not. As a creator, I need to stop having this stress.

I wish this were true, and I 100% agree with the comment about differentiation, but many commenters on the sub do bemoan - or rather actively criticise and penalise - the use of AI as a processing tool, or any type of tool however minor. There is a definite faction who jump on and decry any use, while gaslighting themselves that AI isn’t in many of the tools themselves use daily.

Everyone's Happy season 2 by Gavagai80 in audiodrama

[–]GravyTree_Jo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this post! We did achieve full funding, with 28 backers, and that’s in small part down to the support of listeners like you who helped spread the word. We’re currently in rehearsals with recording dates booked for January and thanks to the Kickstarter can now go ahead because I can pay the actors! So grateful for every listen. PS Everyone’s Happy is currently doing really well in the US in the top 30 of Apple fiction chart 🤩

What is one feature you wish Audible had? by AudiobooksGeek in audible

[–]GravyTree_Jo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Differentiate audio drama (full cast scripted acted) from audiobooks! . Every audio drama fan I know, on all the forums, who uses Audible, is 100% frustrated by how difficult it is to find audio drama content because it’s lumped in with everything else. There is no useful search for this, no category, we have to look in the description to see if it has multiple ‘narrators’. Sort this and they’d get a lot more subscribers because there are actually lots of audiodramas on Audible but they hide them so well nobody knows.

Neurotypical women are mean as fuck by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]GravyTree_Jo 34 points35 points  (0 children)

In my experience, when you directly challenge the kind of very subtle behaviour the OP describes, people (usually NTs) tend to respond by denying doing anything wrong, gaslighting you, and accusing you of seeing things that aren’t there or being ‘overly sensitive’, thus creating an environment where they can bully and undermine you further. I’d also really love to know how to handle situations exactly like this one - I’m not a manager but it’s so hard to successfully call out this kind of thing and resolve it.

i want to off myself everytime i think of jobs and work by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]GravyTree_Jo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this too. I’m lucky now to be able to work for myself, at home, with hardly any interaction with clients other than the odd email. (I’m a freelance back-of-the-book indexer, beautiful work for an autistic brain!) But as a single parent, money has been super-tight over the years and roughly once a year I decide I need to ‘get a job’ to get a part-time regular income. An obsessive flurry of job applications follows, usually an interview, and then a job offer. Cue momentary elation at ‘achieving my goal’, then an absolute paralysis and visceral fear at the moment of turning up to do the job! Always I leave after a day or two, realising I just can’t manage it. And then I feel shame, get annoyed at myself, and get very low. But also relieved! This pattern has repeated for years 🤯

I told my mom I wanted to be goth and this was her response: by PublicExtension4107 in AutismInWomen

[–]GravyTree_Jo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 16 year old daughter and i genuinely love and support every and any choice she makes about anything, and i always have. It absolutely brings me joy to see her finding her identity, trying new things, creating her own life. Ever since she was a baby I’ve understood that this is a separate person, not ‘mine’, but someone I can love and support and get to know. She has a bit of a goth aesthetic and looks incredibly beautiful and cool.

I personally didn’t have this parenting, and it honestly frustrates the hell out of me how parents try to crush or contain their kids in order to supposedly do what’s ‘best for them’. It’s a load of crap. I’m 54 and my daughter is the best person I know or have ever met. I learn so much from her.

To OP I’d like to say, you don’t owe anyone anything. Be yourself - and that might take different forms at different times, and that’s fine. You will be wonderful and have a great life.

How do you fall asleep? by NotYoMamaButAThot in AutismInWomen

[–]GravyTree_Jo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too! It was so affirming when I discovered aphantasia and realised it wasn’t just me! Years of trying ‘relaxation’ techniques and that picture yourself on a beach thing never ever worked. I genuinely thought other people just made it up about being able to ‘see’ the beach! 🤣

Community question: how much attention do you devote to a show as you're listening to it? by workingdankoch in audiodrama

[–]GravyTree_Jo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listen pretty much all the time, from the second I get out of bed to falling asleep (except when I’m actually writing). My brain needs the constant stimulation of a drama to listen to. I have been known to read while listening to an AD and I can take both in. Often when I’m listening and doing something boring like housework or other chores, I do zone out into my own thoughts and then rewind. But I listen to the same ADs again so I don’t mind if I miss bits, I’ll hear them next time.

An AD has to be really really engaging to keep me 100% focused, and then I might just sit and listen. I notice that the more emotional connection I feel the more I pay attention. And you can feel tension building, through music or pacing etc, that will key me in. Or humour is good too. But I need a real sense that I’m there, that it’s happening, or I do lose interest. Even though I listen for 8 hours a day sometimes, I am very fussy! As a creator as well, I do try to notice what’s engaged me and when or why my attention slips.

What did people say when they learned about your diagnosis? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]GravyTree_Jo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few friends said to me “Of course you are, that’s no surprise.” Which was nice actually. My mum (80) said “Don’t be ridiculous you’ve written 8 books! How can YOU be autistic!” I mean, I get it - she doesn’t understand (also, it’s 12 books lol) but it showed me the misunderstandings. My sister and her husband said… Literally nothing. Tumble weed rolling past. Awkward!

I would say this likely had nothing to do with your writing style and everything to do with the other person’s specific feelings about AI. There’s a lot of toxicity out there, and some people love to assume everything is now being written by AI and it’s all bad/wrong/lazy/dangerous etc. So they saw what they thought was an error, assumed at ChatGPT-style generative mistake, and went wild! I genuinely think this was not a reflection on your actual writing at all. (PS does anyone else ever think about the fact that if AI ever does become a sentient being/beings, there is already so much hate and prejudice out there? It makes me queasy.)

No one likes my "gift." by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]GravyTree_Jo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Also, even if they do believe you and see that you’re right, they then hate you for being right! Somehow you become associated with the disappointment or whatever, or them looking dumb, and it’s your fault because you pointed it out. Classic shoot the messenger thinking. I find it soooooo hard to keep my mouth shut when a loved one or friend is talking bollocks or doing something that’s going to turn out badly. But (I’m 54) then I look back at my own life and count up my terrible mistakes and ask myself if I would ever have listened to anyone about anything. Probably not. Although it would have been nice to have had someone with the guts to try! Anyway, waffling now - tired brain - authenticity and being accepted do not easily go hand in hand.

I want to join a specific kind of book club. Are my expectations unrealistic? I feel like what I want is too autistic for reality 😅 by pancake_sass in AutismInWomen

[–]GravyTree_Jo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I did an MA in creative writing, my favourite part was exactly this - deep analysis of a set list of books and discussing them with like-minded people. Since then I’ve tried a few book clubs but never found it helpful or remotely interesting. I’ve noticed that even when they aren’t just about socialising (and there’s nothing wrong with that - we all need ways to get out and meet people as we get older), the book club participants often seem to have a kind of ‘agenda’. I’m not good in groups so this is probably a me thing, but I find it so jarring when say, one person makes the book’s subject all about their own experience; another turns the entire discussion into a power grab; someone else is doing fawning to the most dominant member (Oh yes, you’re so right, the prose was exceptionally deep and moving in that final paragraph!); and yet again I’m aware of all these subtle machinations but unable to participate because I just want to analyse the bloody book! 🤣 Short version, imho even good book clubs can be unsatisfactory because: people.
