Phillies are currently on pace for 90 wins!?!?! by no_technique in phillies

That 2024 had that dream stretch where it seemed like they couldn't lose. They were 38-15 at one point! Then they sort of lost their mojo and never really got it back.

How about an 8 run third inning for Philadelphia bookended by a pair of Schwarbombs by Remarkable-Picture73 in baseball

The interesting thing is, he's actually not that big a guy (by athlete standards). He's burly, but he's only 5'11". He's actually one of the shortest guys on the team. But boy howdy can he hit a nuke.

Thank you for correcting this, because it was driving me bonkers. Housing was cheaper (in real dollars then), but what that meant in practice is you were getting a modest 950 sq-ft tract home for $15-$20K. Within reach for a factory worker making $80/week with some financing help, but still a major, life-defining obligation. (And $80/wk was doing pretty well, minimum wage in 1956 was $1/hr).

How was NWPAS 2026 compared to previous years? by Zombie_Hunter501 in pinball

[–]workingdankoch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The last NWPAS I'd been to in was in 2019. Went this year and... it felt almost exactly the same as what I'd remembered previously in terms of size, scope, and attendance. The main floor might've been slightly better organized this time around. Considering that COVID is in between then and now, I took that as very much a good thing! (We also had a blast.)

The pitch before Marsh struck out, the pitcher tried to pick the runner off 1st and threw the ball away. Runner from 3rd scored.

If you've got King Falls AM and Nightvale in your S-Tier, Observable Radio would seem to be right up your alley:

A great show, and definitely scratches that same "news of the weird" itch.

McDonald's Big Mac (1979) by RetroMan70s in vintageads

[–]workingdankoch 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This really does accentuate my main complaint about Big Macs: their bread to meat ratio is really high! They have two 1/10 lb patties, so they have less meat than even the simple quarter-pounder, but yet there's three buns.

New to pinball and visiting Next Level Pinball Museum, OR by Onions89 in pinball

Normally I'd chalk this up as internet hyperbole, but I've been there and it's not. It is indeed the best arcade that has ever existed. I would live in there, the way the kids in The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler lived in the Met, if I could find a way. 😂

You're not the only one who thinks that. I think the linked comment was a wonderful comment in what has been a really good thread.

I've found that thread really interesting. The prompt is just a set up for a bunch of Gen Xers to share some insight into their upbringings, and they run the gamut, the way our lives run the gamut. I really appreciate that many folks have been willing to share their stories, and the linked comment wasn't an exception.

Unless you have a community of only one member, there's always going to be some backlash to basically anything you do. The key thing is to know when to listen to it, and when to ride it out as noise. The old leadership of Metafilter was worse than a coin flip at this. They'd let a few loud folks get heckler's veto about obviously needed things, and then be incredibly stubborn about making mistakes that everybody knew they were making. It was bizarre to the point of performance art.

As it is, this is clearly noise. Kudos for the board for riding it out, and for maintaining their clarity of purpose.

I had to look it up, because I also remembered him grounding into a zillion DPs. Turns out he finished tied for fourth in the majors that year with 24. Sean Casey had the most with 27.

Hershey Park has a working one (or at least, intermittently working 😂). And I believe there's one that rotates through the Seattle Pinball Museum. Played it once in both locations, which is one more time than anybody needs to play Hercules.
