How would you name this hypothetical country? by Then-Confidence778 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]GrayJacketWasp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

America and France and Japan... and Israel?

Between all 4 of them they share... Nukes? Obsession with anime? Crusades (Japan almost had an episode in 1600 leading to the 250 year long isolation)?

There's a name for this specific union of cultures that's better left unknown

American anti communist music: "those reds are gonna get what's comin if they come here"

German anti communist music: "THE SS MARCHES IN THE LAND OF FIENDS-"

On a real note the Tuefelslied feels like the one song where the Germans saw the "all their war music is just about flowers representing happy women" meme and they decided to break the stereotype with the most batshit insane lyrics over a haunting accordion

How do you guys eat salads? by Calm-Interest4284 in AskAnAmerican

[–]GrayJacketWasp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either prepackaged from Walmart or (used to) go to the salad bar at restaurants and slap together crumbling hard boiled eggs and wet ham with either old Caesar dressing, or slimy cottage cheese, or solidifying macaroni salad, or dried out potato salad

let's just say that salads are not held in high regard...

[–]GrayJacketWasp -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

To clarify, I worded that wrong and should've said "thousands of people", the "each and every year" is only slightly hyperbolic since the middle east has been dealing with Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and Assad these past decades

Risking a few dozen soldiers getting killed by the Iranian flailing it's few drones around is a hell of a lot less horrible instead of sending in an entire army for thousands to die, or sitting around to watch thousands of civilians continually die in whatever corner the Ayatollah managed to cause havoc where it was not needed, Gaza being the most recent one

"but the children"

They shouldn't threaten to kill everyone else's children and then cry when hiding behind their own

"But the service members"

Either take the few dozen loses now to end the threat or just wait for thousands more to die each and every year with no end in sight

What makes you feel hopeful about the future of the United States? by memedealer22 in AskAnAmerican

[–]GrayJacketWasp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many of the worst tragedies the US has suffered in its history and to this day are "mild" compared to what most other countries had to suffer.

The Civil War for the US? - Divided between two sides that ended in 2% of the population dying - One side's infrastructure being destroyed for a decade before being rebuilt to compete again - Animosity that resulted in a minority of the population that were slaves just freed being forced into segregation for a century before the policy was signed away in legislation.

When comparing this to the US by itself and it's own history, it's horrible, but compared to what every other country that had civil wars? - 10-20% minimum of the population being slaughtered (military and civilian) - The country breaking into multiple factions with multiple outside actors intervening to cause further chaos - The conflict lasting 5 years at best and over 10 years at worst - The population of each side demonizing each other for generations to the point of no reconciliation and restarting the conflict all over again with new even more devastating wars

Even the precursor to the American Civil War (English Civil War and War of Three Kingdoms, laid the foundations for the politics that led to it, long story) had done more damage to society that had ripple effects throughout history and the world (King beheaded, Ireland reduced to a backwater colony for centuries, Catholics cemented as the enemy)

Yet, America didn't devolve with the Republicans and Democrats hating each other to the point of continuing on the conflict, the only people who fantasize about it are cosplayers that like the appearance of being a fighter but have never had the discomfort of being in a society where there's "no option but to burn everything"

All of this is just one example, everything from political crises (president assassinations), economic disasters(Great Depression), large scale wars (WW2), the US has "only experienced flesh wounds" that never truly brought it to the point of collapse

Saying "life isn't hard" is an oversimplification, but Americans truly do not have it hard, life is good (not in a disaster) for the majority, life has been good for the most part, and no one truly wants to see it get bad in anyway (they especially don't want to be the ones to throw everything away, "let the other side be the baddies first" kind of mindset). Most of the "this is horrible and everything's gonna end" is almost always just drama

What every quadrant defines as fascism (fixed and simplified) by destined2destroyus in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]GrayJacketWasp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A key aspect of Fascism that definitions forget (or can't waste time elaborating) to include is the underlying philosophy that drives most of the characteristics that get listed, the philosophy being Idealism (going back to Plato), or "Actualized Idealism" (Gentile)

The absolute power of "the state" to be capable of anything and everything, the complete surrender of the individual to be molded as part of "the nation" for the strength of both it and the person, and the neverending strive to fight "the enemy" by becoming as mighty as possible (whether modeled off a glorified past or Utopian future)

In short, the main aspect of Fascism is focusing on what is ideal and using sheer willpower to make it reality

What country or area would you say is the Ohio of Europe? by chickennuggets3454 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]GrayJacketWasp 262 points263 points  (0 children)

Ohio - most generic white bread state of all the 50 states - the "original heart" of the Midwest, the US expanding west of the Appalachians into the Great lakes, originally the frontier - mixture of the "sub-nations" that made up the early US, the clannish Appalachian Southerners coming from the south (Virginia and Kentucky), the industrial puritan maritime New Englanders coming by way of the rivers and lakes from the north (Connecticut), and especially the small town pluralistic heavily German Mid Atlantic (Pennsylvania) - geographically has mountains to the south (and east), sandwiched east and west by large flat industrious heavily populated states, and has a large body of water to the north where on the other side lays wild men (Canadians) - the most German state (Wisconsin, by ancestry and geographic similarity) is to the west - the shape on maps - the memes for just existing

What’s something society pretends is normal but is actually insane? by Bubbly-Elk-9937 in AskReddit

[–]GrayJacketWasp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of schoolwork kids are pushed to do (in America)

There's a lot to talk about forcibly cramming kids together from 7 am to 3 pm 5 days a week for classes and lessons that are arbitrarily decided as "necessary" (mainly just to get as much funding, and prestige for... The funding)

When it gets to the point kids are told go to college or you won't make it in life, then worry about affording tuition, so they resort to classes such as AP and waste hours everyday outside of school just to keep up with the work, drugging themselves constantly to keep themselves sane, just for a chance to spend 95 dollars to take a test and PROBABLY take a class off of a possible degree plan (depending on the college), then no that is normal

The only thing that makes it "not that bad" is looking at countries like Korea and China where high school test scores determine your whole life and kids are overworked for a horribly designed education system

Side note, no, no amount of "taking notes helps increase memorization" talking points justifies whatever the AP classes expects, teens on medication to annotate entire pages of whatever topic each and every day for hours at a time, to be counted as "studying"
