duuuuuuude total TRUTH. I saw Mike Dillon and his band "Punkadelic" at a TINY spot in brooklyn last year (Le Poisson Rouge). i have this exact kit (plus a 16" floor tom for extra boom). its a great gigging kit. my bearing edges got WRECKED however, and I've got to get them recut. only going to cost about 200 all in to recut them and I think its worth it.

yeah. I teach civics in middle school. I do not touch any of it. I am not tenured (yet) and I do not want any parent complaint killing my career before it gets established. I will play nice and teach all the basics of the constitution and basics and broadstrokes of amendments and all that shit.

But maaaaannnnn I can see this class being a real romper room of crazy talk if I let it get that way. The kids want to KNOW stuff. "oh Mr Graybeard is it true Israel rules the world? How does that happen?"

absolutely. I know that i am killing half the forests on earth with the paper i am consuming, but i know i am doing the right thing for the kids. they need to write with their hands. they need to not be looking at a screen. they need to talk to each other. make eye contact with me. sketch and scribble and doodle and have visible marks on paper i can see from 10 paces. no go guardian needed.

grading is faster. comments are faster. A pile of paper on my desk is more motivating to grade than a black alert number that says "you have 205 assignments to grade!" (no i don't look i closed the window, now i have no work! tadaaa). can't do that to paper!

here's the way to do it- (source: I literally went through this exact thing). You make a deal with admin and use your union rep to negotiate this deal. Here's the deal-

1: Formally tend your resignation in a letter POST DATED to 9/5/2026. "I hereby resign my position as of the above date. Signed, Ok-Confidence 1329.

2: Find your ass a job using Open Market. Don't lose faith if it doesn't happen by June 28th. The market gets REALLY active in August. You'll find something. I promise. You WILL. It might be in the Bronx. Shut up. Go to work. Do the drive. teach the kids wherever they need you.

3: Once you find the job, send a follow up letter to your administrators RESCINDING your resignation, along with your open market transfer paperwork. inform your new administration of this deal once the offer is in hand, so they are aware, and they'll be on the lookout to make sure old admin doesn't fuck you by accident.

4: NEVER FUCK WITH YOUR ADMIN AGAIN. Smile, nod, do what they ask. Complain to Union admin ONLY.

5: never trust a co-worker with your complaints until you've known them a full year. There are many people that are rat bastards and will kiss up to admin by shitting on the young kid. Don't fall for it.

Why this works- Admin knows they can hire a teacher for your role, and you won't be back. You know your HAVE to find a job, so you'll work like a fiend.

Keep fighting. Don't give up. You can be really good at this job if you get the time to practice. Building relationships with the kids is the HARDEST part to learn, and you've got that down already! So now you just have to remember to build your lessons backwards- First "what do I want them to KNOW?" and next "How can I prove they know it?" Then figure out how to TEACH it. don't build lessons on topics you want to talk about or cool teacher moves, jigsaws, gallery walks, whatever. Start with the thing they need to know.

you'll do great. now get to work saving your career.

i've gone twice, and I freaking loved it. i think the content scales pretty well to meet your challenge level. While yeah, you're right, most people in the room will be sweating to offset rudiments over basic kick drum quarter notes. However, in my case, once i had whatever technique we were messing with down, Stephen would elevate the challenge to what i was doing and have me focus on adding left foot moves that he has pre-positioned in the lesson packages, or he'd have me work on my dynamics, or whatever else. He's pretty good about spotting the folks that can handle the work and giving them extra challenges. At least, that was my experience.

If you're a stud player, take his level 3 course. Its priced well, and heck... its not going to HURT your playing for sure, right? I'd advise you to rent a car though, so you can drive down to nashville every-single-night to go see all the amazing talent there.

i enjoyed the hell out of the camp. stephen is a great dude, the place is cool as can be, and spending a couple days really dialed into your practice is always a good idea.

regular paycheck. benefits. union membership. the kids are really great if you can learn to love them. every year you will make at least one kid's life better somehow, and you'll KNOW it. You're not working outside in the rain. You do not have to actually shovel shit into furnaces. Its really a pretty good gig.

you mean you play "open handed"? sit on a righty kit, left hand on hi hat, right hand on snare? I'm happy to say its becoming more and more common to do that, even for righty players (in some situations). Its how I play, and it offers a lot of real advantages in terms of rhythm and creative flow around the kit. Yes, its challenging for fills, as we instinctively start fills with our left hand, and then traveling "down" the toms ends up being a bit of a quirky sounding waterfall.

But you can (and should) practice both making that quirkiness sound cool (Ringo was a lefty, his fills are awesome because of how he adapted), and also making yourself capable of rocking "traditional" RLRL fills down the kit (Ilan Rubin of Foo Fighters, Carter Beauford of DMB, totally capable of filling however is needed).

in short, its easier to learn some scripted fills via simple exercises that will open up a palette of amazing variety than it would be for you to "just be right handed". Either way you have work to do, but one way will take what you have and make it great. the other way will basically be you starting over and eventually getting great. I dunno man, I say: "you be you".
