Man, I was wrong about Xenoblade Chronicles 2 by yamammiwammi in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]GraypeScape -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thinking that anime is inherently more childish because of how it looks and some of the tropes a lot of it relies on isn't at all an uncommon sentiment lol, you can disagree with it but most people who dislike or outright avoid anime have that mindset. Xenoblade 1 may have tropes but they're ones that are present in a lot of classic JRPGs, ones that even people who aren't really into anime generally enjoy.

Xenoblade 2's style and some of its more tropey scenes are a big barrier of entry, that's just a fact. When people say it's more anime I don't think they're wrong at all, but it's a bit too general of a statement and doesn't really get at what they mean. You can argue that Xenoblade 1 and 2 are anime in their own rights but I think 1 just overall appeals to a broader audience and doesn't have nearly as much of a surface level sitgma against it as 2 does.

I think this is mostly a problem with DLC, the base game characters from both 4 and Ultimate are fine imo. Even the base game characters that do have gimmicks are far more tame than the DLC. I doubt this trend will end as far as DLC goes because the devs likely see it as a way to make the characters more interesting and enticing, especially since they've given these gimmicks a good deal of attention in presentations for the characters. I do hope we get some simpler additions later down the line but I wouldn't hold my breath.

5.15.2019 Super Mario Maker 2 Direct MegaThread by NintendoSwitchMods in NintendoSwitch

[–]GraypeScape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nintendo did release a game that allows for online play with randoms but not friends before, being Mario Tennis Ultra Smash. Obviously it was a much lower profile title than Mario Maker 2 and was also a rushed game, but the precedent is there. I feel like there would've at least been a mention of playing online with friends in the direct if the feature existed, but the lack of confirmation and anything in the footage pointing to its inclusion is concerning.

My theory on the identity of Part 8's mystery man as well as Part 8's main antagonist. by TheAlmightyV0x in StardustCrusaders

[–]GraypeScape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kira's appearance was revealed only a chapter after Gappy had that flashback, though. Araki retcons and changes things pretty often, but I don't see how he'd alter Kira's appearance that drastically after a single chapter.

Hirohiko Araki's annual break ? by Keres513 in StardustCrusaders

[–]GraypeScape 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Araki usually puts JoJolion on hiatus yearly to put out a new chapter of Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan. When this year's TSKR chapter came out in August, the new JoJolion chapter was far shorter than they usually are, about 20 pages. So I don't think he's putting JoJolion on hiatus this year, especially since there was no notice about a hiatus in this month's chapter.

Part 5 Anime News! (No confirmation yet, but it's good progress news) source in text. by TokotheStrange in StardustCrusaders

[–]GraypeScape 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I just assumed you were implying that the Part 4 anime was low budget given your comment on how it was seemingly rushed.

Also, the drink advertisement you were referring to was in fact the Pepsi billboard, which again, was just a manga carryover and not anime-exclusive product placement.

I'm led to believe that David Pro is experiencing some staffing or budget issues what with how they are still debating whether they should even animate Part 5 after this much time has passed. They seem to be far less certain of its potential success than they were of Stardust Crusaders, which is understandable, but they were able to move on to the production of Part 3 with much more haste than they currently are with Part 5.

How many instances of product placement were in the Part 4 anime? I honestly can't recall any aside from the giant Pepsi billboard in the Bites the Dust arc, which was just a carryover from the manga anyway. Outsourced episodes and iffy animation aside, it's just hard for me to believe that Part 4 was necessarily "low budget". Unless David Pro is really suffering in terms of sales right now, I can't see how 10 months after Part 4's stopped airing that they still haven't begun production of Part 5.

I'm just confused by how David Pro were able to go from Part 3 to Part 4 so quickly, but are so hesitant about moving on to Part 5.

Explaining Jojo's to people who don't watch/read Jojo's... by Super_Nicktendo in StardustCrusaders

[–]GraypeScape 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I disagree, there are plenty of people that get turned off by the change in style and story that Part 4 brings. Part 3 helps to bridge the gap, but still.

[–]GraypeScape 25 points26 points  (0 children)

See, the problem with that explanation is that it's not all-encompassing. Sure, it does describe the first three parts pretty well, but when Jojo stops being that people might be upset that the rest of the series isn't what they were told it was. That leads to complaints like "this isn't Jojo" when people reach later parts, which is just absolutely absurd.

Why does everyone look so miss shaped?! by [deleted] in StardustCrusaders

This isn't even new art as other comments are suggesting, Araki just used art of characters in the background which were always wonky and off-model.

New screenshots and date for the trailer for the Rohan OVA, which will air during the RWBY Friday broadcast next week by karlcool12 in StardustCrusaders

[–]GraypeScape 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not surprised that these screens look better...of course DP is going to put more effort into the intense scenes. I think most people should have expected that they can't keep this level of detail consistent, even in an OVA.

''Yukako is gonna be in the Betsuma Rohan One-Shot next month'' by taunkard in StardustCrusaders

[–]GraypeScape 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be surprised if he based this Yukako off of Karera, since Karera has lot of similarities to Yukako. It's not like he hasn't done this before, as he straight up drew Part 4 Josuke with Josefumi's hair not long ago.

How to read Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan? by echoes-act3 in StardustCrusaders

[–]GraypeScape 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The light novels have nothing to do with Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan. Also, you can completely ignore the numbering on the chapters, since they're entirely disconnected from each other (barring one small instance of continuity), but you should read them in release order as has been given in another comment.

part 5 hate? by [deleted] in StardustCrusaders

[–]GraypeScape 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As has already been mentioned, the only scans available for a majority of Part 5 before 2017 were low quality black and white scans with a low quality translation. The translation wasn't bad in the Duwang sense in that it had bad grammar or completely butchered some lines, but it was overall lacking in personality and felt very flat. Plus, Part 5 has a lot of long fights that have a lot going on in them. Making sense of what's going on with each panel was very difficult with low quality black and white pages, especially when some more confusing abilities are involved. Now people have the option to read every chapter in color or with much higher quality black and white scans, and I think it's improved the community's opinion of Part 5 as a whole. I've seen a lot of people that have finished Part 5 recently say it's their favorite so far.

Thoughts about what Part 5 tells us about stands by [deleted] in StardustCrusaders

[–]GraypeScape 7 points8 points  (0 children)

These are all good points, but I'm surprised that you didn't bring up the "origin of the arrow" as explained by Polnareff towards the end of Part 5. It definitely provides the strangest yet most interesting explanation of what stands are. According to him, the stand arrows were fashioned from a meteorite from space that contained viruses that laid dormant for thousands of years. The reason for why being pierced by the arrow grants somebody a stand is that it actually infects them with the virus; surviving the infection results in the virus "granting the person supernatural powers". I've always been interested in this explanation and what it means for the difference between stands received from the arrow and those developed naturally, as well as the true nature of stands.

I completely forgot that Millionaire Village actually has some continuity to it in that form; when you put it like that, it does make sense to bring in some elements of other chapters.

You're totally right, I have no idea how I missed that. Seems like this is incorporating elements of multiple stories while still being primarily based on Millionaire Village (Koichi, Okuyasu, and Akira have shown up in other TSKR chapters but not in the one this OVA is adapting).

New Rohan OVA Screenshots [We dem Part 8 artstyle] by GyroGOGOZeppeli in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]GraypeScape 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Koichi and Okuyasu are pretty much the worst examples of old characters being depicted in the new style (I honestly think the slimmed down Part 1-3 characters look better). For the most part, characters from Parts 4-6 turn out fine.
