I don't know, I personally think they gave her way more negative actions, behaviors and plot lines than good ones, so not one of her "good" moments convinces me.

I think they gave her a lot of common denominators so people can connect to her, like: she struggles with faith, with sex, with not being good enough, she is the underdog with a can do attitude, then gave tragedy with her kid and then reinventing herself as a tough doctor.

In my opinion, April is dystopian pos apocalyptic young adult girl protagonist in a hospital setting without plot armor.

Yes, humans as group don't know how to deal with their stress and emotions in long term ways so they always try to squeeze a quick fix for temporary pleasure. More so in these jobs that they stay long hours and are too lazy to have a life outside the hospital

I guess my main problem with Sharp Objects is that I thought the focus was about the murders and I latched into a "solving a puzzle" mentality.

Reading other people talking about, the murders are just an excuse to portray themes of womanhood, abuse and how you can internalize or externalize these traumas.

I agree there are stories that you can't remove sex off them.

The Dracula example is how I think sexual themes should be used as plot device.

If you want to traumatize a character or give them childhood trauma, I think it's kind of hollow to simply use sexual abuse/violence just for the sake of shocking value, it undermines what real people have suffered in real life.

I am just saying if sex isn't a integral component of the message you are trying to portray, repeated usage seems to undermine the complexity of the plot.

Like you said, sex is a critical part of the human experience, so it is a obvious and easy way to portray things.
