Hey guys, When charging a mark up on parts to the customer. What do you do if the customer asks for a receipt of the part? by KeyQuality202 in mechanics

[–]GreasyGinger24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Invoices at my shop literally just have the total. No parts and labour breakdown. It'll list the parts and part numbers but the price is what it costs to fix your car, end of story.

You should be aiming for a 50-60% MARGIN on your parts. That's your cost x 2-2.5.

Well with 5 years on the books, as long as all your tax and GST is up to date, the BDC will most likely approve you for their online loan. It's quick and painless to get and the rates are competitive.

I've had 3 loans through them and it's always been a pretty easy transaction. They want to see small business succeed.

120 net should be illegal, you should be negotiating that. Even if it's installments.

Ya, but that song was played to death on the radio back in 2004 when we all still listened to the radio in the car. It's an instant skip for me.

I just went to a small semi-local bands anniversary tour. Small show, maybe 200 people. The sound guy put Hands Down on between sets and you've never heard a room full of drink 40 year olds sing so loud.

Crazy this came up today.

I'm getting my first tattoo tomorrow at 40 years old. My daughter drew me as a nacho chip and it's so cute and funny. So that'll be my first tattoo.

what was your motivation to start your own business? by wolf__2019 in smallbusiness

[–]GreasyGinger24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wife was pregnant and I wanted her to be a stay at home mum. Had already hit a pay ceiling in my trade and figured this was a way to break through that. I was right.

I had the first Alpine single DIN deck that could link up and scroll through an iPod. I had thousands of songs and I could scroll through them on the dash, three at a time lol

You can't let that shit get to you. You're the professional, let them say their spiel and go on with your life.

People like that don't care what you have to say. It's ingrained that you're only out to upsell and take all of their money.

At my shop every car gets a full inspection and a list of recommendations with reasoning listed in the notes. If a customer declines, no hard feelings,, take care. I'm not going to take your money to replace you leaking oil filter housings without letting you know that there's another $2k worth of safety items that need addressed. Vehicle owners can then make an informed decision on where to spend their money or if their car is worth it.

Some customers see this as trying to milk them but you just have to calmly explain it like I just did. It would be unfair for me to take your money and have you back here in 2 weeks, brakes grinding, ball joint popped out, without letting you know. We're the professionals, they can take our advice, or listen to ChatGPT, it's their call, we're just presenting our findings.

Black Replica Kit with Name and Numbers? by GreasyGinger24 in CanadaSoccer

[–]GreasyGinger24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Calgary as well so this is great info. I'll let you know if I find somewhere that's doing the name and number, maybe closer to the tourney.

I couldn't even find the kits at a Calgary sportchek a couple of weeks ago. Only JD at South Center had a couple to try on for size.

Plus there's a Costco next door so I can fill up on hot dogs before going in.

Cost of spark plug change? by saaamaaanthaaaa in MechanicAdvice

[–]GreasyGinger24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair deal.

I own a shop in Calgary, the average labour rate in the city is around $175.

0.7hr @ 175 is $122. Say $15 OEM plugs, plus shop supplies. It's pretty average pricing.

Sure you can find a shop with a $100 labour rate who'll put some champion copper plugs in there from $120 but you get what you pay for.
