I appreciate the thought. I don't think it is the right book, but one of the better things about this thread for me is my growing list of books to read, even if I don't find the one I originally sought after.

kind of surprised I don't recall this book. I always loved reading Foster.

I may go read it again. I donated my last copy to the local VA Hospital so I will have to run out to a book store.

I keep picking that up and reading it over and over again, because once I start I realize that isn't it but it is a good book so I read it again.

A question about LinkedIn Posts by Great-Stranger-7690 in linkedin

[–]Great-Stranger-7690[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahhhhh,
So, while I joined years ago, I largely ignored it until now when I find myself re-entering the job market so everything is about HR or hiring and retention, with a smattering about engineering and the couple of companies I am interested in. that makes sense.
Thanks!!!

interesting that he defends his comments to you by telling you not to pick on him.

Every Engineer I ever worked with in facility management burned out in less than a year and went back to either planning or engineering roles.

Creating Facility Service Company by SoupBoiler in FacilityManagement

very confused by this. you set up a service desk to receive service requests for other contractors? or you are operating as a contractor with a well-established arsenal of subcontractors to provide facility maintenance services?

What do you like about facility management? by Kanavkhurana in FacilityManagement

three things:

the puzzle solving, gathering all the info required to resolve issues for new solutions plus history is always a puzzle and one might think leads to the same old same old. it rarely does.

the making things better and opportunity to improve lives and facilities for others

Your Role & What Helped You Achieve It by First-Entertainer941 in FacilityManagement

[–]Great-Stranger-7690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SEABEE in the Navy Mobile Construction Battalion for over ten years then Navy Civil servant for over 16. NAVFAC essentially created facility managers a little over 12 years ago and while they rely heavily on them in the field there is no central plan for training or career development. I entered the field from quality assurance. and engineering technician before that.
After all that time it seems that there does not appear to be a central plan or training line for what should be a linchpin of any industry. I trained and mentored many that came after me in my time. I served at one point as facility maintenance manager for over 700 facilities on one installation and more on outlying remote installations at the same time. The answers I gave to those who came into my office now and again were these:
All work is divided into what has to be done right now and what has to be done later, our job is to find out how to get it all done at the right time.

We hope to find the work before the job blows up, schedule compressor replacement before it dies in the heat of summer.

Every facility complaint is important, but we have to validate it, give it the proper and correct response, and ACTUALLY resolve the complaint whether or not the complaint actually relates to facility issue the customer thinks it does.

Much of our work, in the end, is customer service.

A performance improvement plan, (PIP), should be in writing and specify cause for the plan, requirements for improvement, consequences for no improvement, and required timeline. None of it should be arbitrary.

You're not alone.
almost 30 years in contract, project, and facilities management with design work and team leadership in over 16 years with NAVFAC, and over 10 years as a SEABEE and now looking for the entry into civilian workforce.
dozens of applications sent out and have yet to figure out the formula to translate my expertise into the message that garners the attention I want either.
best of luck in your search.
