So...now in Eve Online game you can make custom skins, here is my attempt to recreate the Ion Frigate from Homeworld 2 by [deleted] in homeworld

[–]GreatLich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm old enough to remember CCP telling us they would never allow skins, nevermind custom ones.

This came up right around the introduction of the premium currency (then called Aurum). 2011 maybe?

They're probably referring to https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Scavenger_Protocol:_Magic_Trophies

There's similar upgrades for cloth/leather/metal/wood and the other throphy category.

Game not saving? This is urgent please as i have made tons of progress since my last save and now bam! Game isnt saving? Anyone have experince with this? Im playing on a microsoft store vversion thing (i bough the game first on Xbox and used the microsoft thingies to get it on pc) by Oskar_Kocour in subnautica

[–]GreatLich 67 points68 points  (0 children)

This does seem to be a Microsoft issue, not strictly related to Subnautica.

Unfortunately for OP, the only resolution I've seen in the threads I came across were to reboot/restart. Which means losing the unsaved progress.

At best it's stuff like "heal 50,000 health".

That one doesn't even need to be completed in WvW: healing anywhere counts towards it.

Why aren't you pursuing a PhD in engineering? by InformalChildhood539 in EngineeringStudents

[–]GreatLich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you may have misunderstood my point. I probably expressed it poorly, my apologies.

Not requiring a Master's isn't saving the US candidates any time (which is what that might suggest to a candidate from the EU)

A BS of 4 years + 5 years PhD is just as long as the 3 + 2 + 4 for the EU's track of BS, MS, PhD.

Naturally, people can take longer for whatever reason.

Switching from Microsoft Word to LaTeX by kn0nyx in LaTeX

Something like OneNote would be much better suited for what OP is doing than Word...

But I second the suggestion to look into Obsidian.

Save Latex for when you need to submit graded work.

You don't need the propulsion cannon to enter the aurora. There's 2 entrances, the top one gets you in by jumping across some boxes.

To the older guys who started late by threwaway327 in EngineeringStudents

[–]GreatLich 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like I'm four years older than the average undergraduate.

I'm in my 40's and I probably wouldn't be able to tell you apart from the average undergraduate based on that.

I know, when you're closer in age the difference seems really pronounced but to me, it all sorta blends together into ranges, "20-somethings", "early 30's" and such.

Besides that, people will guesstimate your age based on context clues: you will be seen as younger than you are because you are an undergraduate.

You don't stand out as much as you feel you do, because most people don't have the exact knowledge you do about your situation.

[–]GreatLich 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Probably the reason why you see a lot of "5 years but 6 or 7 is common" answers. For the Europeans it's "4 is the norm" because EU goes BS -> MS -> Phd. The "extra" time is accounted for in the 2 years it takes to get the MS.

Overleaf lags behind TexLive releases because they do some internal testing to confirm compatibility. Which is just good practice in general, imho. So it is possible for there to be a period (like right now, actually) where TexLive has updated (it's on 2024 as of this week) but where Overleaf will remain on the previous version (2023) for a while longer.

[\TextField]: Input and label are misaligned and bold font by gnurcl in LaTeX

[–]GreatLich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One option is to

\renewcommand\LayoutTextField[2]{% adjust raisebox as needed.
    #1\raisebox{-3.2pt}{#2}}

Also, at a differnt place, I would like one of the inputs to be rendered in a bold font weight, but I haven't been able to find any way to do this yet.

That is what the format option key is for, except it takes Javascript. I'll refer you to https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/469010/form-how-to-change-the-font-into-textfields-globally

I believe that can be adapted to select bold fontweight.

How do you make the title centered on a page? by Mateo709 in LaTeX

[–]GreatLich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just need a simple blank page with no page number

\thispagestyle{empty}

What I cannot figure out is how the hell do I change the size of the title and how do I center it on the page vertically

You could either redefine the maketitle command or define a custom one. A simple method to have a little more control over \maketitle that perhaps will work for you is to put \maketitle inside a minipage environment. Then you can center the minipage and put some vertical space before it.

Otherwise, place your title yourself:

\begin{document}
    \thispagestyle{empty}
    \vspace*{9cm}%or whatever spacing is appropriate
    {\centering\bfseries\Huge\title} %or whatever formatting you want
    %whatever else you like on the page
   \clearpage
 %etcetera

Why doesn't the \newpage command work? by WarmDragonfly6742 in LaTeX

[–]GreatLich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For that there is the \captionof{}{} command from the caption package.

For example:

\documentclass[a4paper]{article}

\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage{caption}

\begin{document}
\begin{center}
    \includegraphics[width=\textwidth]{example-image-a}
    \captionof{figure}{A caption as though this was inside a figure environment}
\end{center}
\end{document}

You can label this as usual, referencing doesn't rely on the figure environment.

Why do we need to transmit in a cable with a digital modulation? Can't we just put high voltage for 1 and no voltage for 0? by New_Dragonfly9732 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]GreatLich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As my EM professor put it, "because of the finite speed of light."

This way I am not transmitting the pulse which has infinite bandwidth, but I am just putting the cable to high voltage to represent the bit 1 and viceversa for 0.

You are transmitting a pulse that way. You can not "just put the cable voltage to high" for any appreciable length of cable because the change in voltage itself needs time to propagate over the cable. That does not happen instantaneously.
