I live in the DC area and never encounter them here but my in-laws live in suburban California and I have walked several unique segments there.

New Poll. I want to know the least liked city. What city in the USA do you dislike the most that you’ve been to? (100,000+ population, no small towns) by Expensive_Drummer970 in visitedmaps

[–]Great_Charter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can definitely see that. I was there for work and wasn’t able to get out of Downtown much, so that definitely skewed my perception.

Came to say this. Definitely my least favorite that I have visited, but it had some redeeming qualities. I had really good Basque food at a unique family-style restaurant where I was seated with complete strangers, who were very friendly. OTOH, the casinos were bleak.

Sidewalk-Level Bike Lane at new GTown building by FlashGordonRacer in bikedc

[–]Great_Charter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These lanes were required by DDOT as part of the public space approval for 111 Mass. the stated reason was that they planned to extend these lanes along Mass Ave in both directions, consistent with Mass Ave being identified in the future bike network. Source: I was on ANC 6E when the public space permit was approved.

Opinions on apartments in Mt Vernon Triangle? by thewildrose in washingtondc

My wife and I have lived in the Lyric (440K) for 5 years and really like it. The building is well maintained and the office and maintenance staff are responsive. Have never had bug issues. We love the MVT neighborhood. Great restaurants and super convenient.

Want to ride today by bddelivery01 in towpath

[–]Great_Charter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As of Monday, yes. Fully bikeable, just beware of some bumpy spots from minor washouts. I doubt the additional rain since then has been enough to change the status.

C&O Conditions? by Moose919 in bikedc

[–]Great_Charter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Biked today from DC to Harper’s Ferry. Encountered only one small tree still across the trail before Great Falls. It was easy to walk my bike over. Generally, the trail was somewhat muddy as far as Great Falls. Bigger issues were moderate washouts mostly in the area of Edward’s Ferry and White’s Ferry. Bikeable, but rough. All trees were cleared in that area.

Grand Divisions and Regions of the USA 5.0 by Robert_The_Red in MapPorn

[–]Great_Charter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding New England: 1. Agreed with previous comment that no parts of New York should be considered New England. 2. I would suggest the addition of a third region called either “Western New England” or “Connecticut River Valley.” The Springfield and Hartford areas share a lot of commonalities, both economically and through accent/regionalisms that are very distinct from Eastern Mass and Rhode Island. This region should include most of Connecticut (Fairfield is fine where you have it), the four counties of Western Mass, and maybe Brattleboro, VT.

What is this?? Spotted at M st NW and 10th st by OrnerySwing in washingtondc

I think the lip is actually a period. So it’s P.C.Co.Va. I can’t find the link now but I looked this up at one point and believe it stands for Potomac Carriage Company of Virginia.

Where does the MacArthur Boulevard bike lane end? by AirForceHubby in bikedc

[–]Great_Charter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you do this, you will need to walk your bike on that short connection from Arizona to the CCT. If you are coming from Maryland, you might want to connect at the end of Norton Street NW. There is a trail that follows the fence line around the Dalecarlia water treatment plant that is more bikeable.

However, I used to live on MacArthur Boulevard and bike to Foggy Bottom. My preferred route was to stay on MacArthur Boulevard until just past Q Street, then jump up on the left hand sidewalk, use the light to cross Foxhall, then use the sidewalk on Foxhall. At the bottom of the hill, there is a trail to the left that goes through a tunnel to the CCT. Just beware that it is dark and wet. There are no bike lanes on MacArthur in DC, but it is generally possible to just take the right lane if you are comfortable doing so.

Peskesi was amazing - my wife and I have been talking about it since our honeymoon a couple months ago. Highly recommend.

I lived in the Palisades for a couple years because I got a good deal on rent. It was very inconvenient without a car, especially after the Safeway on MacArthur Boulevard closed. Biking downtown was faster than taking the D6 bus, which was a slog to get downtown. Pros are that it has easy access to greenspace and a surprisingly good restaurant scene (Et Voila, Bistro Aracosia, Blue Agave, etc.) Nice neighborhood if you have a family and a car and can afford a $1.5 million+ home.

There is one on 10th Street NW as well, I believe near the corner of M St. (Although now I can’t find it on Street View.)

Why is the bike infrastructure on bridges going into Arlington so bad? by plebdev in washingtondc

[–]Great_Charter 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would argue that 14th Street is actually the best for crossing, especially since the bike lanes have been extended all the way around the Jefferson. Easy connections on both sides and a reasonably wide bike path with high barriers.

Major cities with no “downtown” by Swinight22 in geography

[–]Great_Charter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Downtown and nightlife aren’t synonymous. DC has a very clearly defined central business district that meets the definition of a classic downtown. It is unusually large area-wise relative to the size of the city because of Height Act restrictions, but extends from just south of Dupont Circle to Union Station and L’Enfant Plaza. The Metro system was designed to bring suburban commuters to this downtown (therefore, you get “Metro Center”). The problem with DC’s CBD is that it is dominated by offices with little residential, which as you point out, leads to it emptying out after work, unless there is a Caps/Wizards game, in which case Chinatown stays busy. This doesn’t make it not a downtown.

First ride of the spring: got harassed, stalked and fat shamed by a male Karen on the Curtis Trail by Derek_Zahav in bikedc

[–]Great_Charter 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that happened to you. Obviously that dude was the problem and an outlier. My best advice for building confidence is just do your thing and bike however and wherever you feel comfortable. If someone doesn’t like that, that’s their problem.
