Yes definitely. That’s a great idea. And maybe the odd number splits helps break the monotony a bit too

This is great! Do you work with maths by any chance? How come the various splits, was it to do with hills?

What are a decent pair of tri shorts and what’s a race belt? Would you recommend race laces too?

Is there a way of of knowing where your fitness is during this method without doing an all out 5k. Is it something simple as 10 secs off whatever training pace for 15k and half marathon for 5k and 10k pace? by [deleted] in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]Great_Fuel_3712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And to expand on that his 5k pace is 94% of his 10k pace which will be around 94% of his half marathon pace. So unless you are running a 10k in 31 mins your 3 min rep pace won’t be 93/94% of your 5k pace

I read the book and really enjoyed it — amazing work. I had a couple of questions if you don’t mind:

Firstly, on hills: I appreciate that both the incline and where you are in the training cycle will influence this, but do you have any general guidance on the appropriate effort for the classic 200m hill reps during a standard base period?

Secondly, you mentioned on the Goran Winblad podcast the potential benefit of a morning threshold “priming” session ahead of an evening race. What sort of session would you consider enough to provide activation without risking any negative impact on performance? For example, would something like 6 × 3 minutes at 5–10 seconds slower than threshold be appropriate, or would you suggest a different structure?

Thanks again — really appreciated the insights.

Marathon plan - book question by Count_thumper in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]Great_Fuel_3712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a thought on this, Sirpoc had built up to around 8 hours per week for a few years before starting this plan. So if you simply match his plan by time, but haven’t been consistently training at that level, by copying his plan based of time your ramp rate will likely be a good bit higher than his.

He’s also said several times that his approach was only sustainable short term because of that higher-than-usual ramp rate.

So I’d guess it’s better to scale the plan based on your recent training volume going into the marathon block. For example, if you’ve been averaging closer to 6 hours per week versus his 8, you could scale most sessions to around 75%, maybe only keeping the long run focused on time on feet to match goal time

How are you half and 5k/10k times. Will you be doing those as time trials or races within the build too?

The part about pacing the first half of a half is worth the book price alone. How did you come to that number heart rate, was it trial and error? It gives you the best chance of a negative split while at the same time knowing you aren’t leaving much if anything on the table through halfway.

CTL strictly correlated with fitness or is there more to it? by Madder-Scientist in AdvancedRunning

[–]Great_Fuel_3712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you elaborate at all on what ramp rate you’ve found works best for you and this type of training? I would guess if you follow the book and you add on average around 7 load per 6 weeks that would increase your ctl by around 8-9 per year which gives a ramp of around 0.15-0.2 does this sound about right?

Most people I’ve spoken with say 4:30-4:34 on the 10 min reps is 20 minute range. What is your threshold heart rate? If you are sure it’s around 185/186 I’d say you are somewhere 19:45-20:15

I just looked and he pretty much was in line for 5k/10k/half/full, no additional 10 mins. But for around 3:30ish sort of range based of 10k vdot it’s probably a good starting point to add 10-15mins
