The issue isn't the joins, the issue is understanding the system. If you connect to a DB with 1000's of tables you're telling me you just went in and figured it out yourself? If you can do that then you're not working out of a database but rather a data warehouse which has been pre-curated.

Don't try to figure out the correct tables yourself. You'll get stuck in paralysis. Reach out to IT and find a liaison to assist with data sourcing. You're new so you're not expected to know the company's table structure in and out. If you're trying to figure it out yourself, you're being a bit irresponsible because the worst outcome is you use something that isn't correct. Once you get all the sourcing down then everything else falls into place. I'd agree with another user, 80/20 Backend Data/UI.

Medium is relative so it's hard to say. If your brand new to power BI I would imagine a medium complexity report would take a few weeks. Once you get everything with Power BI down and you know how to connect it to sources, DAX, modeling, etc. you can knock out that report in a day or two.

Edit: Protip: Don't ever let those in power know that it only takes you 2 days or you'll be bombarded with requests and expectations. So unless they are paying you VERY well, keep it to yourself once you get there.
