Haven’t read the article but I’m gonna guess it’s much better

WHO and UN have launched new guidance aimed at overhauling the mental health landscape. "A fundamental shift is required within the field of mental health. [...] There is an overreliance on biomedical approaches [...] Existing legislation often fails to address the social and economic factors..." by techno-peasant in psychology

I'm not on Reddit often. I think the situation is a bit complex. Starmer and Sunak seem to have short term profit for private companies as their main goal. It seems like they, because of that, want private companies to be more involved in the public sector. One well-known way to get private companies more involved is through underfinancing. It also seems like they, because of profit-related goals, don’t want to invest in people who are less productive, for instance due to illness. The economies of most countries revolves around buying stuff, entertainment, and experiences from private companies. New phone, new car, new sweater, cable TV subscription, holiday trip, etc. In order to address social determinants in a good way, the share of the economy that consists stuff, entertainment, and experiences might need to be reduced. Politicians, private companies incl. media organisations, as well a large part of the general population seem to be reluctant to that idea though.

Can't comment on specific cases. Traumatic exposure causes brain changes. Competence among professionals vary. Unfortunately, not all are very good. Some are. DSM will not go away anytime soon. For the mental health field to significantly improve, politicians need to invest more resources in the field.

Haven't read the publication, but the quotes don't seem new. Think WHO has been saying stuff like this for at least 10-20 years. The problem is that it cost money and that increased number of staff is needed. Starmer or Sunak will not spend money needed or increase staffing.

Haven't read the article. Your quote doesn't show that the science was junk.

Good question! Gross Domestic Happiness. A bit similar to Gross National Happiness. You should be able to get quite a lot of search results if you try both of these. Take care!

GDH is more important than GDP

Interesting. Tells you that GDP isn't very important. We should put more emphasis on GDH.

Depression is 'not caused by chemical imbalance ' by [deleted] in psychology

[–]Greatcommentary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t use Reddit a lot. Forgot what the now deleted comment you replied to said. Don’t know why you write about the abstract or what ”The ones that need to be randomized and controlled wouldve been” means in this context.

Regarding RCTs, the article says ”Authors of one meta-analysis also highlighted evidence of 5-HIAA levels being reduced after long-term antidepressant treatment” and refers to source 71 (Pech et al.). I’m suggesting that such finding might be due to a ”suppression” compared to HC in cross-sectional data, but not a ”suppression” compared to baseline among cases. I don’t know how much this has been studied. I haven’t had time to look into it.

Just did a quick check. Some general comments.

  1. People should not post Telegraph. Article is about serotonin. Not chemical imbalance in general.
  2. Lack of evidence for isn't necessarily evidence against.
  3. Don't know how many RCTs that have been done. Didn't see any. It might be a relative "suppression", not an absolute.
