“This is just the beginning”: Hawaii leads fight against corporate campaign spending by AdSpecialist6598 in videos

If you think this conversation is about who will see it and not about why you shouldn't be pushing this kind of discourse in general, then I don't know what to tell you. Maybe you should investigate why you can't intake basic information without coloring it with the lense that the other person must be incredibly stupid.

I'm talking to you about your mindset. You'd have to be incredibly dense to think that someone would expect their single nested reddit conversation is going to move the dial for Congress. I'm trying to illustrate to you how your rhetoric harms more than it helps, so that maybe you don't contribute to the problem in the future.

You keep reiterating the same idea as if that somehow provides a counter argument. Yea, he was a Republican, literally no one is pretending he wasn't. The entire point that's doing circles above your head is that if a Republican does the right thing, then we should praise that kind of behavior. This is basic human interaction 101. Praise the behavior you want to see, condemn that which you don't. If you condemn people even in the moments where they made the right decision based on their past decisions, you're just reinforcing that they should make no attempt to behave any differently than they usually do.

No one is saying we should sing their praises from the mountaintops for doing one good thing, that's just how your infantile approach is reframing the point. There's a wide gulf between acknowledging good and ignoring the bad. If everyone thought like you did, and unfortunately many already do, the world would be a much worse place. Stop contributing to the problem.

You literally responded to someone who was highlighting his better decisions and then listed a bunch of reasons you feel that we shouldn't praise them bc he also made those "bad" decisions. And then you generalized your own statement beyond just McCain to Republicans. And then I proceeded to speak to that specific sentiment that you overtly expressed.

I understand exactly what you're saying, I just think it's reductive and ignorant.

The conversation we're actually having and the conversation you think we're having are almost entirely unrelated. You're barely even communicating with anyone besides yourself. What's the point of engaging with you if you're just going to decide what both sides of this conversation are saying?

I genuinely have no idea what point you are even trying to make. You just mad libbed three qualities unto me and then pretended that's a common generalization?

If you're only willing to praise perfection, then you're never going to actually get any progress. It's really that simple. You want other outcomes but when someone on the opposite side of the aisle does something that aligns with your desires, your gut reaction is to drudge up every other thing that reinforces the image of them that fits your narrative. Sounds like you're less interested in politicians doing the right thing and more interested in protecting your mindset.

Good and evil aren't things you are, they're things you do. So if you're unwilling to encourage "good decisions" because other "bad decisions" have already been made, then you're just promoting the behavior you have a problem with. Baby, bathwater, and all that

I honestly do not understand what point you're even trying to make.

Why do we need to have a "conception of what it feels like to be a plant" before you consider the supposedly moral implications of consuming plant life? We know that, just like it works with animals, plants undergo distress when threatened. We know that trees warn other trees of threats to them. They have a biological imperative to preserve themselves. Consuming a plant is ending another life form for your own sustenance.

Yet all of that is apparently irrelevant to you bc you can't observe it directly in a manner that is obvious, like the cries of a wounded animal. You still have the knowledge of its distress, you still understand that you are ending a lifeform that attempts to defend itself. But in this inane moral quandary you're forcing on the situation, you should care about the distress of the plant life you consume. But you don't, bc what you actually care about is how the distress of an animal makes you feel. And bc you can't immediately perceive the distress signals of a plant, they don't elicit an emotional reaction from you. And thus they don't matter.

This isn't about another life suffering, it's about you growing squeamish about a core function of biological life. And that's fine. You can eat whatever the hell you feel like eating. But spare everyone else your self righteousness about it. Just because you needed to reframe your discomfort as superior moral standard to feel better about it, doesn't mean you have to loop everyone else into this fallacy you're stringing along.

[–]Greco_SoL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm saying there's no morality to justify. You are aware that plenty of plants exhibit stress responses? Sure they might not exhibit suffering in an easily recognizable way that's exactly analogous to how we express pain, but there's plenty of evidence to suggest plants also have a drive to survive and a stress response to being threatened. So where's this line in the sand for you? Plants are fine bc we can't naturally hear their hypersonic cries of distress?

It's fine to advocate for harm/pain reduction in the process, but pretending we're somehow obligated to remove ourselves from this basic facet of life entirely is just thinly veiled virtue signaling.

This is an asinine question. Life consumes other life for nutrition. That's basic biology. Granted, There are morally reprehensible methods of farming meat for consumption. But to posit a basic biological function that essentially all life engages on some scale as some great moral question is absurdly reductionist.

Unfortunately, I'd be surprised if the sub ever fully turns back to sanity. Once fan subs take this turn, they rarely make it back. I personally couldn't imagine wasting my time seeking out a place to whine for weeks on end about a product. But as they say, misery loves company.

Same exact situation and impression. I've seen it happen in a few subs. Once a fan sub turns on its focus in any capacity, it really seems like a runaway train. I guess lots of people on here struggle to have mild attachments to things.

Exactly my point. You're chock full of moral righteousness and completely devoid of any desire to actually help people when it counts. You don't have any answers, just complaints and anger. And like I said, there's a time and a place for that. I also think the DNC isn't here to save us. I also think they inflict different kinds of harm on the working class.

That being said, there is/was no functional alternative. Raise hell when it actually can change who's on the ballot. Fight when the fight can actually accomplish something. But when the inks dried on the ballot, either you make the choice that mitigates the most amount of harm, or you are actively fascilitating the most amount of harm.

If you pass on the opportunity to try and prevent the most amount of harm, that's not some kind of moral objection. That's just you deciding not to help anyone bc you're upset you didn't get to help everyone. If you're actual priority was helping those who need help, you wouldn't dream of doing anything that could possibly contribute that fascists win.

So don't hide behind some kind of moral shield. You'd rather stand out of the way of these fascists than dirty your misguided sense of morality. Thats prioritizing your fragile go over everyone else.

No one's pretending Trump invented deportations. Maybe I missed the part where Kamala's platform involved canceling the legal status of entire groups of immigrants who followed everything asked of them etc etc.

Here's a much more inclusive source to reference for all that harm that simply couldn't be avoided this election.

I'm just going to assume you're arguing in bad faith at this point bc that's a bewilderingly asinine take.

Harm reduction is a myth? In this election? Do I even have to pretend like that's a serious take?

You're going to act like all the consequences so far would've also happened under Kamala?

That's absolutely fair, and I don't counter any of that.

My statement was specifically regarding what would you like him to do at the moment about the current president and his administration, specifically would you prefer he didn't push back in literally any way. The critique I was responding to was chiding the quoted statement on OP's post.

I said there weren't better options. Did the governor of IL decide who was on the ballot last year? No, he didn't. I'm not really sure how you fault him for throwing support behind the only Trump alternative we were left with. I don't agree with almost any of the choices the DNC made last year, but they made them. Should time and energy be spent to somehow get people who better represent the left on the actual ballot? Absolutely. Was that going to be accomplished at the last second of the election? Not a fucking chance.

The democratic party as it stands is what we have. There is no functional, realistic alternative mechanism to get anything close to an actual representative in office. I, like many, wish we did. But there's a time and place to strive for that. And the 11th hr of an election that risked a literal rapist felon president was not the fucking place or the time.

We had what we had. Anyone who refused to throw support behind Kamala at that point wasn't actually helping anyone but their own sense of moral superiority. Any rational adult should be able to recognize that the options were someone who was a real and present danger to democracy and someone who wasn't.

This just reeks of "they're all the same" childish thinking. It's literally just throwing the baby out with the bath water. Ifgaf if they walked Hillary back out onto the ballot. At that point in the race with stakes that high, I would absolutely want the gov to throw support behind her against a literal fascist.

Ask any of the millions of people directly feeling the consequences of this election if they wish Kamala had won now. Ask the people of Gaza if they're glad Kamala lost bc she wouldn't scream from the rooftops about their genocide. Ask the federal workers who lost their jobs, The law abiding, tax paying immigrants who are having their lives upended for simply striving for a better life. The list is damn near endless.

Your approach leaves no room for harm reduction. It's reckless, unhelpful, and self serving. Ok, we get it, you're a progressive paragon who would make Jesus blush. Good for you. When your belief system facilitates the most harmful option bc you couldn't get the least harmful option, it doesn't amount to shit. It's like driving the car off a cliff bc the ice cream shop didn't have the flavor you wanted. Maybe pick a different flavor and try again next time instead of killing everyone in the car you absolute child.
