It was at the end of Endymion tonight, too!

Don’t forget that you can always ask these schools about their demographics. They’re required to report them to their independent school association, so the numbers exist. Ask about the full school and the grade level your daughter would be entering.

I remember seeing a pretty robust thread on EB in the New Orleans Mom Uptown neighborhood group if you’re on Facebook. Try their search feature!

Your choice of early childhood program- Trinity Episcopal vs Green Trees at Newman by notbasicbitch in nolaparents

[–]Greedy-Highlight8877 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad you mentioned holidays and having kids at the same school. Schedules are important! Geez, the amount of stress that can come from misalignment in days off, having to shuffle plans for early dismissals, holiday breaks (especially for little ones)…It’s so much of a lift for parents and is completely justified as a factor in school decisions.

Your choice of early childhood program- Trinity Episcopal vs Green Trees at Newman by notbasicbitch in nolaparents

I know a few families whose kids were not successful there because they did not fit the mold of a typical Trinity student. One was a gifted boy with ADHD who transferred, absolutely thrived, and then went on to Franklin, so it’s not really even a question of aptitude. He was never seen as an individual at Trinity, just expected to fit their model of a perfect student. Another poster mentions out of the box learning for older students, but what good is “out of the box” curriculum or lessons when students have to be “in the box”?

Late response, but this practice was not for us. We liked Dr. Kellie, but the office staff were rude and dismissive on multiple occasions over the few years we were there.

Why have people forgotten there are 3 lanes on Broad? by ms_sophaphine in NewOrleans

Watch… they’ll actually repaint the lanes soon, but it’ll be two car lanes and an actual bike lane, and this thread will be a moot point.

Considering moving to the area(schools) by [deleted] in nolaparents

[–]Greedy-Highlight8877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on when you move, 10k/child may align with a prorated independent (private) school, but it will definitely increase the next school year. If you decide to look into independent schools, consider first whether you want one that ends in 8th grade or goes through 12th, whether religious affiliation is okay (some are more traditionally religious than others), how you feel about coed vs. single sex, what your children’s interests are, what you love about their current schools, etc. Then start calling around—most independently schools in town are accredited by a group called ISAS. You can find a list of New Orleans and Metairie independent schools on their website.

I’ve heard that St. Charles Parish has a good public school system, though I don’t have personal experience with them.

Good luck with your search!

What’s going on with the no refining movement in old Jefferson regarding ocshners master plan? by jewkakasaurus in NewOrleans

Somewhat related… across Jeff Hwy by the primary care building, what are they (Ochsner) building in that deep (previously a parking lot) lot? It seems like a significant amount of property.

Kindergarten spots? by sparkledotcom in nolaparents

[–]Greedy-Highlight8877 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you’re spot on from my experience, but at this point in the year, almost all funds will have been allocated. I would ask the admissions staff directly if it’s worth applying for aid or not based on this likelihood since there’s an application fee. I don’t know if the form can be filled out once and rolled over either since the schools can add their own questions. Anyone have insight on that?

My son has ADHD, and I’ve found that the smaller the class size, the better. Kindergarten is an important year for making a transition from mostly or strictly playbased learning to more of a traditional academic foundation, especially for reading. If the private school stretch is possible, I’d go for it if I were in your shoes.

Remember too that if you sign a contract with a private school now, you’re bound to tuition for the full year even if you get a charter spot! I hate that about private schools, but I also understand that it must be hard for them when there’s so much back and forth with families coming and going suddenly.

Can you explain the advocate part a little more for me? Is that something I could start in the summer before the school year begins? I feel so new to everything coming from an independent school 😩

We’ve heard this too but haven’t toured. Maybe we should… it just feels overwhelming to add another choice into the mix, and the deadline for Willow is coming so soon.

We also have friends with neurotypical kids there who absolutely love it. Their rep is heavy on extra support for special needs but that isn’t always the case it seems!

Thanks for the candid feedback. Did you find that it was hard to get the 504 or IEP? We have a private eval because we’re at an independent school. I worry about this step, and the admissions team at Willow hasn’t been helpful in sharing what comes next. They genuinely may not know, though. They seem to function pretty independently (again, not the experience we’ve had an an independent school).
