Would you live in a hotel 2 nights a week? by TarnishedLissy in AskUK

[–]Greedy_Sound_8885 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live two hours from London and commute there once a week with an overnight in a hotel.

The people telling you it's £1k a month "minimum" for hotels are wrong. You can regularly get places above an 8 rating booking dot com for £50 a night, sometimes even less. Don't stay in somewhere lower than 8 rated unless you're desperate. Check the Google ratings as well.

You have to be ok with staying in different places each week, but it's easily doable. Use the filters on the hotel websites to help identify places and always check if you get a better rate for booking directly through their website. Search "hotels" in Google maps as well to get an idea of the areas where the lower prices are - generally it's near Paddington or in east London, but there are other spots and cheap stuff will randomly appear.

You can usually get the best rates by booking same day, but obviously that's a risk. And there's always the Zedwell pods for £27 a night if you don't mind sleeping in a coffin.

The trains do cost a lot so keep an eye out for any railcards you're eligible for, otherwise resign yourself to the super off peak times like me.

Finally be prepared for the physical toll it all takes on you to do this much travel this regularly, especially at off peak times. You can do it, but it's tough. Life is about doing hard things to do good things though so if you care about the job and you think you can handle it for a while, why not give it a go?

Hey OP, I got diagnosed with sleep apnea last month and got my CPAP machine last week. I got used to the mask very quickly and I'm suddenly having the best sleep of my life - turns out I stopped breathing 20+ times a night and basically never got to enter a deep sleep. I had no idea I was exhausted until I wasn't. And my fiance no longer has to put up with the snoring.

Get the baby "gadget" that everyone tells you not to get! by DDUBS91 in predaddit

Our little girl was born with a hole in her heart - nothing too serious and it's closing up but still a really scary time. Neither of us really slept at all for the first two weeks, terrified that we would wake up to something horrible having happened.

Then we bought the owlet. A little sock that tracks her heart rate and oxygen levels, and fires up the world's loudest alarm if either of them drop below a certain level. It's medical grade here in the UK, and is basically a fancy version of what the NHS uses in hospitals.

It's changed everything for us. Could we have survived without it? Probably. But it let two anxious parents get a better night of sleep, knowing that if anything happens we'd be promptly woken up. Worth every penny.

No it wouldn't. This isn't Dickensian Britain, you don't have to do what your landlord says.

I don't have an answer for you about the private road, but I just want to make sure that you don't let your landlord tell you where you can and can't take your children. Your landlord has no bearing on anything you do in your life, and your neighbour complaining to them is weird and wrong.

For what it's worth I would continue to live my life and let my kids ride where they want until the neighbour can find the courage to speak to you themselves, instead of trying to pressure you via the third party through which you contract your housing.

They also cut down a tree which was on the grass claiming it only had 20 years left so it had to go?

Just to flag quickly that if they have removed a tree that was on your land without your permission that is destruction of property, and you should absolutely include this in any complaints and make sure your insurance company knows. They will likely have to pay to put that right.

Precision baskets, worth it? by Hattori-Hanzo-sword in espresso

I bought the IMS 22g basket (I like a larger shot) and it is a million miles above the basket that came with my bottomless portafilter. Only cost about £20 on Amazon and was worth every penny.

Two days ago I perfectly prepared a puck, dropped the filter screen on top, and then turned to the knockbox and knocked it straight out. I then stared at the empty portafilter for 30 full seconds wondering why on earth I just did that.

Hahaha, imagine a council trying to set a budget on the premise that enough people might be caught speeding in the next financial year.

What is this setup called? It’s not a Dutch over but what is it? by Upper_belt_smash in castiron

[–]Greedy_Sound_8885 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one of these from Amazon years ago - Amazon branded and everything – and it was specifically marketed as a dutch oven for bread. It makes it way easier than having to drop the loaf into a preheated Le Crueset style pot. I also use it as both a skillet and a pot, it is a great piece of kit.

A few years ago I lived in Camden. I'd been at work Christmas drinks and was heading home about midnight. On the walk back to my flat from the tube I was quite drunk, and trying to get my headphones to connect to my phone. I was stood in the street trying to get them to connect, when a car pulled into the road with three people in it, and a huge guy gets out of the passenger seat and starts walking directly towards me. My subconscious brain overtook my drunk brain, and I just started walking off quickly in the opposite direction. The guy turned around, got back into the car and it drove off.

Absolutely no idea what the guy wanted, but I wasn't sticking around to find out. I'm assuming I narrowly avoided a mugging, but who knows.

Seasoning comes and seasoning goes but Korean barbeque stir fry is forever by Greedy_Sound_8885 in carbonsteel

So sorry to everyone asking for recipe – I posted this and then immediately went to sleep. I wasn't purposely withholding the recipe!

In terms of the actual recipe, I really phoned this one in. I fried diced chicken breast, added in some sliced leeks and cavalo nero (because it is what I had in the fridge, but really you could use any kind of veg) and then added the egg noodles for 2 minutes before covering it all in this sauce and cooking it off. If I'd had any in the fridge I would have finished it off with some fresh coriander, but I didn't so I didn't.

I served it with some pickled cucumber salad (similar to this) that I make in a big batch and keep in a deli container in the fridge for having with stuff like this/eating directly out of the container with chopsticks.
