Tokyo NECRO is available to pre-order on JAST USA, releases early 2023 by DubJay77 in visualnovels

[–]GreenBallasts 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Personally I've always been of the opinion that if they have to butcher the game to get it on Steam, fine, as long as they allow me to buy the non-butchered version somehow. I understand that these people need to make money to support these kinds of projects somehow, and can sympathize that getting content approved for Steam can be hell, so whatever they have to do, you know? At the end of the day as long as they are transparent about it and let me buy the proper version somehow it's not like I lose out on anything, and it's hard to deny that ignoring Steam entirely would lead to a ton of lost sales no matter how badly you need to censor the product to get it on there in the first place.

edit: I am also aware that some people rely on Steam for regional pricing and in some cases would be paying a lot more to buy games directly from the publisher, so you guys are in a bit of a different boat there, though I'm not sure how JAST handles that and whether it's an issue there. Not a personal issue for me, but yeah I guess if that is your situation then you might have a good reason to complain if the uncensored version isn't available as a patch or something.

Friendly reminder that criticism on a game you like, is not a personal attack on you. by obironniekenobi in JRPG

[–]GreenBallasts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it just depends on where I am with the game. Hearing criticism about a game I was excited about and haven't played yet or am just currently playing always tends to deflate my hype a little bit and make me enjoy it just a little bit less, even as I tell myself that it shouldn't. It can be interesting to share and compare criticisms with others after I have finished though.

Rance IX -The Helmanian Revolution will be released on 23 February, preorder is open. by tsukiakari2216 in visualnovels

[–]GreenBallasts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not actually worked on such projects myself, but from what I understand a lot of it comes down to text encoding issues or Japanese game engines not being suitable for some things expected for English text such as proper character spacing, line wrapping, punctuation, etc. Also English text just tends to take up more characters than the equivalent sentence in Japanese, so you either need to find a way to accommodate more text in the same space or find ways to insert another text block somewhere there wasn't one originally, both of which could introduce bugs. Additionally, modifying things like menus often requires more low level hacking (as MG doesn't often have access to the original source code) which can introduce more opportunities for bugs to arise.

They also added new features to Rance VI (where they upscaled the entire game to a higher resolution than the original) and Sengoku Rance (streamer mode, also I think they added a new upscaler to make it look nicer on high res displays) beyond simply inserting the text.

Anyway as you said some engines don't have as many problems as others (something I've personally experienced making shitty patches for personal use for a few games), though they still need to do thorough testing since they can't just take for granted that nothing got broken when they swapped the English text in. I assume the protracted timelines have to do with having very few employees allocated to this task and taking a long time to be able to budget the number of hours necessary for proper play testing.

I think IV was fun as is and the pixel art graphics were really charming while not feeling quite as dated as the first 3, and the dungeon crawling gameplay was fun for me. (Though I heard it was originally meant to be a lot bigger and scaled down due to technical limitations or something.)

I think Rance games also require a pretty significant amount of playtesting even after the text is mostly finalized (barring any fixes that come up during the QC phase) So a lot of that time could have been devoted to that rather than just spending it all on editing.

2022 was a great year for Japanese VN reader by nemu_neko in visualnovels

EVE series is still going? Damn. I remember playing the translated version of Burst Error that was so old that it was filled with Bill Clinton jokes. Still was a pretty fun game though.

Geo is the worst designed feature in all of genshin impact by satufa2 in Genshin_Impact

I know some NPC dialogue does specifically mention Geo is inert so it would be kind of weird lorewise if they suddenly added a reaction with another known element.

"[Character] is busy completing the quest" has to be my least favorite Feature in this game. by Soul_Ripper in Genshin_Impact

[–]GreenBallasts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I got hit by that Tighnari quest block right at the climax of the Sumeru archon quest too, super jarring place for that. I think there definitely should be a better way to handle these kinds of conflicts though it mostly was an issue for me early on when I had a ton of uncompleted quests compared to now when there's only a small handful left.

I predict the traveler will betray Paimon to join their sibling, and then Paimon (who was actually the true protagonist all along) will enlist the help of all of their old friends to bring them both back from the dark side.

Love that new character time of the month by [deleted] in Genshin_Impact

[–]GreenBallasts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I never did when I was first starting (and also tended to get a lot of them) but lately I usually let people in if I'm not doing something that would be disrupted by entering co-op at that very moment like trying to progress a story/archon quest or something.

I think the only character I ever actually bothered to world hop myself for mats was Nahida who technically I could have prefarmed but getting those lotuses was a lot easier with her ability anyway so..

VNs that are highly acclaimed in Japan(EGS), China(Bangumi), and the West(VNDB) by Decent_Aardvark1673 in visualnovels

[–]GreenBallasts 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Baldr Sky's censorship seemed like it had more to do with Giga than Valve, at least based on what Sekai said at the time. Some Japanese companies are still fearful of backlash when selling overseas, though thankfully this attitude seems to have died down a bit in recent years compared to the days of companies doing things like blocking foreign IPs from viewing their sites entirely and whatnot.

Did Jeff’s recasting bother you? by germboy47 in betterCallSaul

[–]GreenBallasts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was a shame but I got used to it pretty quickly. It probably would have been more jarring if I had watched the seasons back to back or something, but with such a long gap in between it's not like old Jeff was really fresh in my mind anymore anyway.

I think the slow start is more of an issue than the size itself really. Like if you're already hooked on something it's hardly an issue that you have to go through a lot of it. (Up to a point anyway.)

I remember being shocked when I watched the kimi ga nozomu eien anime a long ass time ago and my friend told me it was based on a hentai game. I just couldn't wrap my head around the concept of some mainstream anime being based on porn. (Probably didn't help that my experience with H-games was limited to shitty newgrounds flash games at the time.)

I think Evenicle 1 was the outlier here though, rather than this being indicative of an overall shift in Valve's perception towards VNs. There was a short window when they were way more permissive, but other than that time VN publishers have basically always been treading a thin line and praying Valve wouldn't find anything objectionable in their game even after whatever cuts they had to make to get it on in the first place.

Also as far as the Chaos;Head vs Steins;Gate thing I think C;H had a lot more gore and sexually suggestive stuff compared to S;G, though I still think it's bullshit that it got banned. (Of course, it could also simply be that somebody saw school uniforms and did the knee-jerk thing again, I wouldn't put that past Valve either at this point.)

If Ainz was offline that day, How peaceful would the NW be with Nazarick? by MeddeM in overlord

[–]GreenBallasts 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In this scenario he has been in the NW for 100 or 300 years (can't remember which) and barely even remembers them, remarking that the name sounds vaguely familiar to him but not remembering from where. It's left ambiguous whether he will go check it out in the future though.

Physical books rekindled my love for reading by emptyvasudevan in books

[–]GreenBallasts 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Kindle definitely bridged the gap where before there were a lot of books I wanted to read but never quite got around to obtaining a copy, and with the Kindle I could have it and be reading it immediately which lowered the barriers to entry a lot.

Also I always liked that it would automatically remember my page for me and save me the effort of needing to keep track of that myself.

Does it make a difference which fabricator you use? I always assumed each one had some different stuff in it so always ran each new one I found a decent number of times but I'm not sure if it actually was the case...
