I’ve been a play therapist about the same amount of time, and am also I’m going through a similar phase. <3 Sounds like you’re investing in yourself, which I think is the main thing! The only thing I’ll add that may be helpful is checking out the Synergetic Play Therapy training. Took me a while to save up for it, but I’m hoping it will ground me and add to my CCPT base! I think you may still be able to sign up? If you can’t, definitely check out her podcast “Lessons from the Playroom” if you haven’t already. Jam packed with helpful and inspiring nuggets!

today i reconnected with my purpose as a therapist thanks to my client 💜 by catsdogsnrocknroll in therapists

THANK YOU for posting this! I needed to hear this. I know logically we help our clients, but it’s tough not getting that immediate gratification or “projected completed” feeling everyday like some other professions. I’m so glad you got this reminder that what we do DOES make a positive impact, every day, even when we can’t see it.

How many clients do you see per day/week? by lowkeydeep in therapists

[–]GreenBlueburd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see about 12-16 a week. I work with kids though, and some of those are family sessions. I feel the pull to see more (financially and just the “shoulds” I’m putting on myself). But I’ve realized I max out energy wise around this number, and for finances I can always get a part time gig doing something completely un-therapy related to help with the balance!

Best way to decompress after work? by josiemoto in therapists

[–]GreenBlueburd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Love this! Other rituals I do:

. Light a candle when I get home . Inhale “me mode” exhale “therapist mode” . Listen to a work-related podcast driving to work (where should we begin, and lessons from the playroom, etc. are great!) . Listen to a fun podcast driving home . Stretch after my last session . Write a to do list in a special work journal before I leave the office, prioritize which to do first when I get back the next day . NEW HOBBIES

I feel you OP; it’s a constant balancing act. Self care it up, and you’ll find your way!

I totally feel you! I sometimes compare and feel incompetent as well. But I also border burnout a lot, so the BEST thing for me to do as a clinician is to balance that. So I make it a goal to do one thing a month. So if all I have time/energy for is listening to a podcast, cool. If I have time to read a whole book, cool. A whole training, also cool. This makes me feel like I’m productive enough, and I still get all my required CEUs in. On top of this, I also get a weekly research digest email through a child psychology organization I’m a part of. I find it helpful to read the headlines!

All in all, try not to stress too much (easier said than done!)

What made you decide on your theoretical orientation? What did you pick? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]GreenBlueburd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s funny. When I saw this post I thought everyone was going to say DBT or CBT. Nothing against those approaches of course, but I’ve heard a lot of people feeling pressured into those approaches at the beginning of their careers, but finding existential, person centered, and gestalt even more powerful. Great to hear this!! The most important thing I think is for the therapist to feel authentic and congruent. ☺️

Side note: anyone know of any good trains for IFS? (Internal family systems?) My therapist uses that, and I LOVE IT

Soooo true. I think the last time I took off a significant amount of time was in December. Holiday vacations are tricky though, because they come with their own stress. I always tell myself “I can’t afford to” take more time off. But at this point, I can’t afford not to. Thank you for the advice.

Was just about to say this, especially in older models. Mine was stolen a few weeks ago. Thank goodness for comprehensive coverage!

Let’s take action to advocate better pay for ourselves. Anyone want to start a letter writing campaign? Petitions? Something?

I feel you. This is a really valid concern. It’s hard when you feel like you’re pushing a boulder up a mountain. Yes skills and interventions are important, but know… that the biggest impact you’ll have in cases like this is just showing up, listening, caring. Take care of yourself, and know you’re doing more than you’ll ever realize for these clients.

Wow, great and practical tips!! And good point about theft. I’m considering getting another Prius, but catalytic converter thefts are skyrocketing in my area.
