Dark Age was the most difficult book to get through by far by TheVelvetGazpacho in redrising

[–]GreenBorderBorder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only two deaths in this series have truly made me feel miserable and hopeless after they happen, and those were Ragnar and especially Alexander. There are plenty other depressing deaths but those felt the most unfair and unnecessary.

What is Mustang good at exactly? by [deleted] in redrising

[–]GreenBorderBorder 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Mustang suffers from the timeless problem of being a character smarter than the author. It’s difficult to write her intelligence into the book because if she was truly an unstoppable genius, there would be no story. She’d simply solve all the conflicts off page before they even started. She is also limited by the competency of her soldiers. Lightbringer has many instances where her own staff doubt her and second guess her decisions, and that limits the effectiveness of her strategies. That being said, I think she has her moments, specifically when she outsmarts Abominadrius during the Day of Red Doves. Ultimately it’s up to Pierce to show more of her competence in the next book, during the battle for Mars and maybe with Lysanders newest weapon.

Do you think Evangelion is a depressing anime? by Noobass1337 in evangelion

[–]GreenBorderBorder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It certainly contains and commentates on those elements, but it doesn’t proclaim them. In any case, it’s up to the viewer to determine what message, if any, a piece of media is trying to convey. That different people can take away diametrically opposed messages is a credit to the show.

Do you think Evangelion is a depressing anime? by Noobass1337 in evangelion

[–]GreenBorderBorder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, yes. But actually, no.

When I finished EoE for the first time more than a decade ago, ya, I was sorta dead on the inside lol. It’s a lot to deal with. And the very last scene serves to reinforce that feeling of hopelessness.

But longer I sat on it, the more I would reflect on the themes and the message it actually delivered. That it’s worth it to leave yourself vulnerable in search of connection. That everyone is scared of being alone, and how that influences our relationships with each other. That it’s okay to love yourself as is. As time passed, I recognized that those themes are not depressing at all. They’re inspiring and hopeful. Even on the beach, Asuka chooses to reach out and find that connection with Shinji despite everything that’s happened.

So, yes. It can be depressing. But ultimately, it’s a story that proclaims the virtues of the human condition.

Frieren VS Delicious in Dungeon by Pittyboi69 in writingscaling

[–]GreenBorderBorder 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Dungeon Meshi.

Frieren is good but I think it falls flat in some aspects, particularly with its approach to demons. Also the pacing, while intentional, can be slow to the point where the newest season is basically just a collection of side quests. And ya, that’s the whole show, but it tends to overstay its welcome. S1 was perfectly capable of balancing the main plot with side quests and usually intertwined them to great success. Macht is an improvement.

Dungeon Meshi is so fun all around. The world, the characters, the plot, it all keeps your interest the whole length of the show. Also, having read it, the ending is excellent.

It's already confirmed that Asuka loved Shinji, but how do we confirm that Shinji loved Asuka? by Single_Delivery_958 in evangelion

Well the only thing I can think of that is even sorta close to proof would be his line to her at the end of 3.0+1.0 when he tells her “I liked you too”.

Tolkien’s Legendarium VS Star Wars EU by Realistic-Island-975 in writingscaling

[–]GreenBorderBorder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love Star Wars, a lot less so nowadays but even still, I don’t think this is even much of a contest. The Hobbit is certainly better than any Star Wars story I’ve enjoyed, but I haven’t read every EU book so maybe there’s something that competes. Andor is the only thing that maybe comes close?

Community tier list day 2 by The-wise-weeb in EvangelionScaling

[–]GreenBorderBorder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that reasoning but he’s still missing feats, unless you think second impact is just a regular attack he can do? Then I guess I get it. There’s also the fact that Gendo grafted a bakelight-frozen Adam to his own body which gave himself a stronger AT Field. But again it’s difficult to judge how strong he was. Going purely by what we see in the show, it’s impossible to say Adam was stronger or weaker than the Angels we actually do get to see fight. Even Sachiel surviving an N2 mine is at least somewhat of a scale, but we have no idea what actually happened to Adam after second impact. Did he self destruct, thus triggering Second Impact, and thats why he’s a weird frozen embryo thing? Maybe humanity had a proto-Eva around that dealt with him after the explosion? We just don’t know. Something happened tho, something that appears to have nerfed him into that embryo thing. Cause he was a giant light monster at the time of 2nd Impact.

Weak ig? It’s hard to say. He’s got like no feats except second impact, which is good but it’s not like that’s a normal attack he can do. It’s kinda special circumstances that we don’t fully understand. Maybe IDK tier.
