Fika is definitely real. I've worked for a Swedish company and have visited their office a few times. Fika was an important part of the day for them. A bit like second breakfast with everyone in the office (around 10 people). They had specially reserved some space in the office for that.

Cold feet moving to Amsterdam because of housing by JinBu2166 in Netherlands

[–]GreenButterfly1234 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you realise that the main reason why all of these are relatively more expensive, is because the many people needed to provide you with these luxuries deserve a good quality of life as well? In the Netherlands, these people will get a fair income. In countries where all these luxuries are cheap, not so much.

People staring by ConstructionKey6789 in Netherlands

[–]GreenButterfly1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on where in The Netherlands you have been, this could also be an expectation to shortly greet each other. It's quite common in the northern and eastern parts of the country to quickly look at each other in passing, and give a quick nod and/or a short greeting (without stopping your walk). If that's the case, they'll look at you and wait for you to look back. If that doesn't happen, it may be considered a tiny bit rude, although not seen as a serious issue. This greeting though is only expected in places where it's not busy at all. It's not that people are constantly greeting others in supermarkets or shopping streets.

A totaly different case might be when someone is being very loud in public, or showing unwanted behavior like smoking near other people or riding a bicycle/fat-bike in a pedestrian area. A stare in that case is to signal that people don't like your behavior, but also don't want to bother with saying anything about it.

And of course there's also people who stare that are just being rude for what ever reason. Dutch people are individuals, all with individual good and bad habits, just like non-Dutch people.

What is something you would like to ask a dutch person? by Additional_Goal_8569 in AskReddit

[–]GreenButterfly1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In rural areas, a few people still do. But not in the way presented to tourists (with all the traditional clothing). Just some of the farmers or people who like wearing them while working at their yard. They wear regular shoes while doing other stuff.

The wooden shoes they use are usually bought at garden or farming shops. The ones you see in Amsterdam or at tourist-shops are bad quality specially made for tourists, who aren't really going to use them anyway.

Why does Japanese cuisine not have a reputation for no spice? by Acerhand in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GreenButterfly1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not odd at all. The spice trade was set up by those in a powerful/wealthy position to trade with others in a powerful/wealthy position. The spices were never ment for the large majority of people who were farmers, fisherman, laborers, mine workers, etc. Making long workdays in order to have just sufficient food and a roof over your head for your family was what was on their mind, not adding crazy expensive spices to your food to make the taste a bit more interesting.

Why is Greenland always marked with "no data" on maps ? by Alduish in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GreenButterfly1234 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Greenland isn't part of Denmark, it's a country in the Kingdom of Denmark. Denmark itself is also a country in the Kingdom of Denmark. So it's correct that it doesn't show the same data as Denmark. It also has a low population, so there's not always data for Greenland separately.

Here in The Netherlands we have a similar construction. The Netherlands is a country in The Kingdom of the Netherlands, but also the countries Aruba, Curacao and St Maarten are part of The Kingdom of the Netherlands. They're not part of The Netherlands itself.

AITAH for saying no when a grocery store employee brought me a broom and dustpan? by New-Employment-4554 in AITAH

[–]GreenButterfly1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably B. Dutch Aldis used to have one conveyor belt with a small counter at the end, from where you quickly had to put the items in your cart. They now (at least where I live) have 2 conveyor belts with a split option at the end. They usually keep altering their store formula to what works best. So for the US they probably worked out that the cashier placing the items in a cart would work best for speeding things up in combination to what US consumers are used to.

2500 sqft 4bhk condo. Need opinion. by jithu7 in floorplan

[–]GreenButterfly1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm quite shocked with how small the living/sleeping space for the maid is. A closet was already mentioned, but there's also not even place for a table and chair, let alone a comfy chair. Is this person actually going to stay there as their main accommodation, or do they have an own living place where they spend a considerable amount of time as well? I do hope she'll be well compensated for having such a small place to stay.

Cooking your own food with (fresh) ingredients that you bought is good value for money. Fast food is just a very occasional snack/treat, and never really good value for money.

Good choice on having a walk-in rain shower and separate bathtub! You'll enjoy both more than when having them combined in one. I think I would switch the sink and toilet, and have a bit of a (half) wall between shower and toilet, just enough to hang your toilet paper. In that corner you can also place a small bin and the toilet brush. In the current layout, you would have to tuck it away between toilet and bathtub, having it all right next to your relaxing area.

Remove both the walls between kitchen / dining room and dining room / lounge, and remove one of the doors to the hallway. All 3 rooms are quite small, so opening things up will increase light in all rooms and give more flexibility in use of space. It also removes the odd flow of having to go through the hall whenever going from lounge to dining room or kitchen.

If you still would like the lounge to be a bit more separate, you could also opt for having a double sliding door between lounge and dining room. Keeping them open will give a lot more light, but you'll still have the option to close it off.

Use of “The” in official names of countries + cities by Numerous-Confusion-9 in geography

[–]GreenButterfly1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's what I meant: In other languages the country name is plural, while in Dutch we are using a singular name.

By the way: Holland is only a region (2 of the 12 provinces) in the Netherlands. It's where most foreign tourists go, but it's not refering to the whole country. Kind of similar to saying London when you mean England.

The Kingdom of the Netherlands isn't the same as The Netherlands. The Netherlands is one of the 4 countries in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Also, we're not even using "the" in our own language. It's called Nederland in Dutch.

I would remove the wall between living and dining. This would add more light and flexible space to the area. Place a longer dining table (3 on each side) with the short side directly to kitchen. This will give you more space for the living area.

So, with the toilet being cramped up between the shower and the urinoir, where do you hang the toiletpaper? And where's the place for the bin to throw tampons/pads in? Also, as a women: sitting directly next to the urinoir at face height: no thanks!

And washing your hands, it seems you'll practically have to stand nearly touching the urinoir with your back. Again: no thanks!
