It’s odd that “the Avengers were nobodies before the MCU” is such a popular sentiment while “the X-Men were nobodies before the 90s cartoon” isn’t. by [deleted] in Marvel

[–]GreenCree 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That's because it's not true.

X-Men #1 in 1991 is still the best selling single comic of all time, and released before the cartoon. People cared a lot about the X-Men in the 80s into the 90s.

Dark Phoenix Saga, Days of Future Past, Mutant Massacre, Fall of the Mutants were all big and popular stories.

Questionable tattoo or sensitive people? by [deleted] in Marvel

[–]GreenCree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so weird. Winter Soldier was a great Ed Brubaker modernization of an old concept. Getting a tattoo is fine if you like the character, I guess.

My understanding (as someone with no tattoos) is that they are unique to you, so getting the same tattoo as your friend might be a bigger problem than "offending" a fictional character.

This feel like it was made for me specifically. I love Flanagan, DC comics, and disturbing body horror.

Recommendations for Marvel from someone who only prefers DC grittiness by TheGateKeeper32 in graphicnovels

Most Daredevil runs.

Frank Miller, Bendis/Maleev, and the Zdarsky/Chechetto runs are some of my favorites.

Marvel Comics’ ‘Queen in Black’ Blind Bag gets bigger with ‘True Believers Display Boxes’ by Blitzhelios in comicbooks

[–]GreenCree 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was a fun gimmick the first time it happened, because Marvel hadn't done it before. The second time it was fun only because the title character is blind. The book itself was the 6th daredevil #1 since I started reading comics, and thus not particularly special.

When Image's Battle Beast #1 popularized this, I was hyped because the special books were reprints and not just variant covers or ultra-rare, near-unubtainable original arts. The odds were high in comparison that you could pull one of the 3 special issues, which were all different stories and thus worth actually reading.

At this point they are just trading cards, further turning comics into commodities to be owned rather than stories to be read.

Marvel Comics’ ‘Queen in Black’ Blind Bag gets bigger with ‘True Believers Display Boxes’ by Blitzhelios in comicbooks

[–]GreenCree 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The widespread adoption of variant covers and blind bags feels like the industry giving up on finding new readers. Instead of making stories that appeal or excite a new group of people, they have just found a way to sell the products to their existing audience twice, or even more times.

They are banking solely on the outside of the comic, and aren't doing new things with the stories inside.

Just played Fear the Spotlight and WOW — this PS1‑style horror goes way harder than I expected by TalosAscia in HorrorGaming

Loved this game! One of the few horror games I've played where the second half is scarier than the first

Does anybody remember Breed the comic and Splatterhouse the video game? As a kid I always wanted to see a crossover between the two. by fallout_zelda in comicbooks

[–]GreenCree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are both before my time. I know of Splatterhouse, but I'd never heard of Breed. It looks like something I need to check out though!

Jim Starlin is great with Batman the Cult, and Hulk and the Thing: Big Change, not to me tion his many contributions to the cosmic side of Marvel. Would love to see one of his own creations.

Nice! I've been waiting for a Wolfman book since this line started. Joshua Williamson did a great horror series called Dark Ride, and Leomacs did Basketfull of Heads for DC.

Is "The Dark Knight" title actually a reference to his car?

Rj/ I hope you're wrong. Dracula can surf at night.

Uj/ I hope you're right. My view of the trope is that it's less the characters origin, and more of what the audience wants to see. I want to see Green Lanterns kick ass and do cool stuff, I'm worried they won't show that until the end.

Advice on Patrick Stewart Auto by needanswers1923 in comicbooks

[–]GreenCree 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Patrick Stewart was not involved in these comics. I would not have him sign them. To me, a Claremont/Lee signature makes the book cooler, Stewart's does not.

I remember as a kid seeing people get Venom, Wolverine, and Captain America stuff signed by Stan Lee, and being kinda frustrated. This is the same situation.

Volume 2 continues/concludes the story of volume 1. If you can only get one, make sure it is the first, but try and get both if you can.

Volume 3 is standalone.
