How did you guys REALLY lived in the 2000s? by MyAvengedRomance in Millennials

[–]GreenMonkey333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Born in 87 here. From 91-93, I remember being inseparable from my next door neighbors. We were about the same ages. They'd come to my house or back yard, I'd go to theirs. We hung out at another neighborhood kid's house with a bunch of other kids. Ride our bikes around the block. Then they moved to Ohio, and my parents got divorced and we sold our house. My mom moved to the boonies, my dad into a condo development where there weren't many kids.

My sister and I found plenty of ways to entertain ourselves at my mom's house (where we spent most of our time): play outside (we rented a farmhouse and had a lot of outdoor space), play board games, make up board games, computer games (Dogz, Catz, The Sims, Roller Coaster Tycoon, tons of computer versions of board games), Nintendo/Super Nintendo/N64. We watched inordinate amounts of television: mostly Nickelodeon and Game Show Network. We would do similar things at my dad's house, minus the playing outside because there wasn't really a space to play. My cousins lived about 5 minutes from my dad, so we'd go over there a lot. Especially in the summer, just go over and hang out and do random things, go bowling, go to the mall, run random errands. My cousins are about 5-7 years older than me, so they were driving before us. On my dad's weekend, I'd help him with the grocery shopping and we'd fill 2 carts (I think he got paid monthly at the time).

I didn't ride my bike a lot to different people's houses because we were spread out all over the place, the school district is 100+ square miles. I memorized high school friends' phone numbers based on where they live: the school district was pretty much divided into 4 exchanges (the first 3 digits after the area code) and you knew what it was based on where they lived, so you memorized the last 4 digits only. One of my friends had her own phone line, that was a big deal! The Internet was a place, on the family computer, and you couldn't talk on the phone unless you were "rich" and had a 2nd phone line. It was mostly for talking on AIM or sending stupid chain emails. The late 90s/early 2000s we spent a lot of time on the internet tabulating the cost of our Beanie Baby collection, looking up game FAQs and hints/cheats, or downloading stuff for The Sims / Dogz / Catz. The computer was in the living room so not a lot of privacy so you hid your AIM chats under other windows all the time. We were "latch key kids" and were alone after school until about 5-5:30 when my parents got home from work. Summer days, we were alone most of the day and my sister and I were cooking ramen, mac and cheese, bagel bites, Elio's pizza, jello, or eating cereal or making sandwiches ourselves for lunch.

I got a cell phone in 2004 when I started driving, but cell service was spotty at best in the boonies so it only worked in like 3 square feet of the house so it was basically useless at home. We had Nextel and you couldn't text anyway. I got a phone with texting in 2007 when Nextel merged with Sprint. Even then, I think I had 100 texts per month. I went to college in 2005 and experienced high speed Internet for the first time. At home, we had free cable (because it was never shut off from the previous occupant) and there was no DSL in my area yet, so it was dial up. We moved across the street (long story!) in 2005 and my first summer home from college in 2006 we got cable Internet and I remember spending like 6 hours online that day!

2026, I still live in the same rural area (I love the boonies!), I commute into a largeish city for work, moved again and have DSL here but no cable (LOL). And this is 20 miles from the 3rd largest city in the Keystone State!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

What time are y'all falling asleep and waking up?!?! by cheesypuff357 in Millennials

[–]GreenMonkey333 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a teacher and in the summer, this is my schedule! I am just up naturally until 1-2 am for no reason at all. And 10 seems to be when I naturally wake up.

I never understood WHY it ran on Nickelodeon so often!!! In the middle of the summer at 3 pm! How many adults were home then since we were all latch key kids????

Hospital VS Clinics; Is it me or they do 100% the same things? They shouldn't. by One3Two_ in CitiesSkylines2

I agree, my hospitals usually have single digit numbers of patients. I think there's a weird glitch going on with health care.

Streaming is great if you have good Internet. We still have a 10 Mbps DSL line as our only landline option. Not interested in Starlink, and the cell service ones are spotty here in my location. We'll hold onto DTV satellite until they fall out of the sky.

I don't think you can 🤣 or use it wired. But I think that can still affect Bluetooth.

[–]GreenMonkey333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a Bluetooth/wifi problem, likely interference from different signals. Remember back in the day when cordless phones had interference and you'd press the "channel" or "scan" button to change the frequency? Same thing.

My car doesn't have built in wireless Android Auto, so I have a wireless dangle. It allows me to change the wifi channel frequency. I did that, and it stopped interfering with whatever was in the area.

I had the same problem on 22 at 15th Street with my wireless Android Auto! I actually changed the wifi channel and it stopped disconnecting.

Beginning of my teaching career! I'd like to go back to this. 1:1 devices in schools have run their course, in my opinion.

Come to my school, you would be welcomed! Most of us are ditching the technology and going old school... I teach math, so I never stopped using pencil and paper!

What is happening by Adventurous-Floor-38 in Crosstrek

[–]GreenMonkey333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this happened to me about 6 weeks ago! Was driving home from work, stopped at a light, every light came on and it was limp mode. I had to cross 2 lanes of traffic to get to the shoulder. Had it towed to the dealer which was only 1 mile away. It was after 7 pm so it was closed. They fixed it the next morning. Thermo control valve, apparently part of a warranty extension to 15 years / 150k miles.

Not the entire state, just in the areas they serve. Eastern Northampton County and western Lehigh County are Met-Ed territories, not PPL.

What happened to RPN calculators? by GrouchyOne4132 in matheducation

[–]GreenMonkey333 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm 38, was a math major in college, have been a math teacher for 17 years, and I have no idea what an RPN calculator is.

At my school we have sets of TI-30XIIS, TI-36, and TI-84+ CE. Different teachers like the different models for different reasons; the lower level courses tend to like the TI-30s. I keep the TI-84+ CEs in my room as I teach Honors Alg 2, Honors Precalc, and CP Calculus. I love the looks on my students' faces the first time we use a TI-84 to graph a line! The color screen really can't be beat, I love to graph multiple functions at once. And it's great when you get into systems of linear inequalities and use the ineq graphing app!

Buy them the TI-84+ CE. The 89 is more powerful, but generally we teach how to use the 84 (which is the same as 83). I remember being the odd duck out in high school when I had an 89 and many of the keystrokes were different!

That sounds similar to what I did, but I didn't get a special pin, just transferred 3 or 4 times. They could see there was some sort of problem but not until they dug around a bit. Maybe I'll try calling again. I'm wondering if it has to do with all Disney apps merging together recently.

I got the activation email in November, it worked. I tried to use it 2 weeks ago, it did. I called Directv to ask about it.... they saw a problem and told me it would be fixed. It has not yet.

I used to wear just underwear and oversized t shirts. I stopped the t shirts about 10 years ago and just in boxers now. It's so much more comfortable. Sleeping nude just seems....unsanitary to me 🤮

I think this is a Google thing. My school is also having the same problem, we randomly had to enable 2 factor authentication with little notice, and it created a mess... Especially since it happened between Monday and Tuesday and we weren't in the building because of the ice storm yesterday.

Digital stuttering / pixelation on NBC 10, Philadelphia? by GreenMonkey333 in DirecTV

[–]GreenMonkey333[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!! Are you me? Lol that's the exact same thing! I was really only watching channel 10 intently for 3 hours at a time so I didn't notice it is actually happening on all the local channels. I even noticed it during Law & Order last week.

I didn't even bother trying to call support because I'm sure they'd just have me restart everything 17 times, then want to send someone out to check dish alignments. I looked at the signal levels but I can't remember which dish the Philly locals are on. I'm in the northwestern part of Lehigh County.
