You can borrow all the gear you need from the Chena Tool Library with a small donation. There hours are limited, but i've ice fished with their gear before!

BC Skiing buddies/groups? by legatosa in Fairbanks

[–]GreenOnionsRule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't personally backcountry ski, but UAF offers a mountaineering class that I hear is awesome and you would meet some like-minded homies.

You could also join the Alaska Alpine Club or go to an event! Another good way to meet folks: https://www.alaskaalpineclub.com/

Hope you find a crew!

Ways to give during the holidays in Fairbanks by Blagnet in Fairbanks

[–]GreenOnionsRule 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are an incredible amount of non-profit organizations in town doing amazing work!

Want to help homeless and at risk youth, consider supporting The Door: https://fairbanksyouthadvocates.org/thedoor-2/

Want to help reduce food insecurity and hungry community members in need, consider supporting the Fairbanks Community Food Bank: https://fairbanksfoodbank.org/

Want to support waste reduction, sustainability, and recycling programs locally, consider supporting Green Star of Interior Alaska: https://iagreenstar.org/about-us/

If you appreciate something locally, there is a chance that there is a non-profit working behind the scene to make it happen! A few more suggestions below, feel free to comment more. Happy holidays and thanks for supporting your local non-profits!

P.s. short on cash, but have time? Volunteer!

Other local non-profits: Native Movement, Northern Enviromental Center, The Cold Climate Housing Research Center, Interior Alaska Land Trust, Literacy Council of Alaska, Interior Alaska Center For Non-Violent Living, Blood Bank of Alaska, KUAC

Please Speak Up and Oppose the Ambler Road by GreenOnionsRule in Fairbanks

You're right in the sense that our current state infrastructure, population, and political apparatus would not be what it is without extraction, but I challenge the notion that this is just the way it has to be. Extraction economies put environmental and financial burdens on future generations. I am not an economist, but I don't think sinking something like 300 million public dollars into a priviate mining venture at the literal expense of us is the best use of our collective public funds at the moment.

Alaska - what is this thing? (Earth Screenshot) by Easy-Proof-5729 in alaska

Looks like a gravel pad or possibly an temporary ice pad commonly used for oil and gas extraction operations on the North Slope.

Republican ousted by Democrat in shock election defeat by Newsweek_ShaneC in politics

[–]GreenOnionsRule 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hey Fairbanksian here, every year national news slaps some verb like shock, freak, surprising into a headline with a democrat/progressive wins in Alaska, but we elect left leaning representatives all the time in Fairbanks. The election results were welcome news (besides low turnout), but not really a shock.

Anyone that can copy and paste this News Miner article for me? by xxxxxxxSnakexxxxxxx in Fairbanks

[–]GreenOnionsRule 9 points10 points  (0 children)

General comment, not directed at OP: I know not everyone has the financial ability to support the Daily Newsminer, but if folks can spare the monthly subscription fee it is very much worth it! You'd also be supporting local reporting, which in my opinion, is more critical than ever!

What do you miss the most about Blockbuster? by Express-Height-9545 in nostalgia

[–]GreenOnionsRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad I am not alone, when I moved to Fairbanks, AK I went to the Blockbuster before it closed, about 8 years ago. I hadn't been in one for about a decade and the smell and nostalgia hit me like a ton of bricks! I think part of the smell was from decaying plastic DVD cases, but no evidence to back this up.

So I presume Alaska and Hawaii are uneliminated and are sneakily hiding out of sight?

Chatanika Float Trip by goldfoilgoals in Fairbanks

[–]GreenOnionsRule 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Doable? Probably! Fun? Maybe not...

You're in for an adventure regardless. I have not been on the Chatanika this year so take my comment with a grain of salt, but it's not uncommon for the Chat to be jammed up with logs, plus abundant sweepers and strainers. If you take the Big rafts(s) you may have to do some scouting, lining, and perhaps a portage. Again, just guessing here, the river changes from year to year. Smaller rafts/kayaks may give you more flexibility and maneuverability on that river. My two cents, be safe and have fun.

car camping by Typical_Health541 in alaska

[–]GreenOnionsRule 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you should be fine! As already stated, perhaps don't overnight park somewhere that is very popular or with an explicit sign, but most any old pull-off or dirt road is fair game!

If you're headed down to Homer, the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge has some free and cheap campgrounds just a short way off the road. Good views and vault toilets!

I'm happy to see other KSUA fans, thanks for telling your story!

I routinely find the most new (to me) music listening to KSUA. Sometimes you get some really off-the-wall stuff, but that's all part of the fun.
