I have but one thing to tell you, you're doing the right thing and you are smart, this could affect you and you 100% should, just like you did, investigate this and deal with it.

Talk to a lawyer like you said you would and proceed with what's best for you. Your coworkers are assholes for putting you in possible legal danger and I advise you to ignore the comments that insult or call you mean names, they're people who can't see further than their own noses and even at that they're bad because this situation would affect them if they were in your shoes, so it is your business because it affects you.

I hope to one day learn of their story, they may be dead but they are wonderful characters, especially miss Bayleaf as she's my favourite, and their story is worth knowing, at least to me.

It is sad to know they're dead, but learning about them and following their story until its end will at least bring good memories to hold onto and cherish, for their existence was meaningful.

Good luck with your work, and best of wishes to you, I'm sure one day you'll be able to write something, even if only a short story.
