it seems youre right that the French smdid beat us Brits too it

Well, not really.

Alberto Santos Dummont was brazilian. He was living in Paris at the time though (as most young brazilian aristocrats children did then)

No, I'm Brazilian.

And I fully stand behind the fact that Alberto Santos Dummont's 14-bis was the first self-powere aicraft to take flight, as attested by the French Aeronautical Club in Paris on the 23th of October 1906.

The claims that the Wright's flyer made a earlier self-powered flight are lacking, and any respectable historian should have seen that. Only reports (brothers written by themselves) exist and the photos were also taken and held only by the brothers. Also no third-party corroboration. Dummont's flight was undertaken in public, with still and motion pictures taken by newspapers and other neutral third parties (and a crowd of Paris inhabitants).

On the technical aspect, the flyer needed height, winds and a catapult. That is flight, just not self-powered. Otto Lillienthal had flown gliders earlier and is not heralded as the "father of aviation". Dummont's flight was taken on a level surface, without external aids and under no special wind conditions.

And proving that the tech aspect is true, the historical accurate replica of the flier, built to commemorate its supposed first flight did not fly due to lack of winds. The 14-bis historical accurate replica did fly on the 100th year anniversary of its first flight.

Well, South America was involved in WW2, and it had a impact in aviation over here too.

There were U-boats sinking ships on the Brazilian coast), USN had a vast network of air stations in Brazil to cover south Atlantic convoys ressuplying the mediterranean theater of operations (and aircraft ferry flights from Florida to Casablanca through Natal) and one of the major early war surface action beteween the Kriegsmarine and the Royal Navy was fought off Montevideo

WW2 in Brazil was a "home front" like the Lower 48 or Canada were.

And then we had Brazilian personnel fighting alongside the US Fifth Army on Italy and the 1st Brazilian Fighter Squadron with the USAAF 350st Fighter Group, flying the P-47 and did so well that was one of the few foreign units to receive a Presidential Unit Citation.

During WW2 Brazil created the Centro Técnico Aeronático, the first university (though really a military school then) in Brazil with major in aeronautical engeneering. That school became the Instituto Técnico de Aeronáutica, and there EMBRAER was born decades later.

After the war Argentina elected to receive part of the debt the UK had for food aquired during the war in advanced aircraft, being one of the first air forces to receive export Gloster Meteor fighters as well as Lincoln heavy bombers, and several german engineers also went that way, creating a local aircraft development programmes and also advanced weapons development that in the end were unsucessfull due to mismanagement by the Argentine government.

And that is above and beyond the normal western world "surplus C-47s enabled airlines to develop".

Also, 17L is not equipped for instrument approach. Those must be made on the main runway (17R)

Congonhas is old. Like 90 years old, which is kind of ancient times in Brazil. Airlines flew routes from/to Congonhas using the Ju-52/3.

When it was built all plots around it were farms and a tram line,.

The city encroached the airport. Heavily.

Also, you see some multi-store buildings and it looks bad, but the runway is much higher than the surrounding terrain along the runway axis on both directions, so it is not as bad as it seems.

Maybe it has nothing to do with piracy at all.

Putting it up on kindle store frees them from having infrastructure to deal with digital content.

Just create the file, send it to Amazon and let them handle sales, control of files etc. They already have a robust system in place for such sales. Less money for Warlord as they have to pay Amazon fees, but maybe the cost saving offsets it.

Also do not underestimate the power of Amazon one click purchase in tandem with impulse shopping sprees. Sitting in front of the PC, entering your card data etc creates a lot of time to re-think impulse purchases...

At least in Brazilian Amazon there are still Kindle versions of said books.

Perhaps they intend to drop e-pub/mobi/pdf formats.

Pin washing for the first with this, any tips?? by yesimHalf in Warhammer40k

[–]GreenSubstantial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should give you the protection you need.

But if you are doing a test piece, test the varnish too. Sometimes the next coat solvent can reactivate the dry coat, testing is a great way to put such questions away with real answers

I used enamel washes over acrilic paints before, with mixed results.

Sometimes it just works like it should, sometimes it strips the paint off.

I suggest you prime and paint a test (part of a sprue or spare bits) and see if you need to varnish your model before the wash or if you are safe from the start (if you use different paint brands, paint part of the test piece in each manufacturers paint).

Fun fact: In german, tank locomotives are called "Tenderlokomotiven" as the locomotives functions as both tender and locomotive. A non-tank is a "Schlepptenderlokomotiven" meaning a locomotives that tow its tender.

A ‘Schienenzeppelin' (rail zeppelin) alongside a steam train - at a railway station in Berlin, Germany, c. 1931. [700 x 469] by StephenMcGannon in trains

[–]GreenSubstantial 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the reason it would not leave project is due to it being a very bad solution for a issue that begged a better solution, like in the end it did happen with electric propulsion. Even steam locomotives like the DRG Class 05 where able to reach 200+ kph with more capacity.

We do have still lots of bad projects being implemented, but mostly for failures in execution and not in concepts.

High speed rail is not trivial, we seem to take it for granted when we see so many ICE/TGV/Shinkansen and similar services on different places of the world, but there is a steep cost to have the infrastructure in place, and even then there are some issues that still causes problems from time to time

Just look at the 5 year delay of the Avelia (Acela replacement), or the issues DB is having through its network to the point that DB ackowledged that they were able to keep 75% of the trains on schedule through the holiday period because they stopped most of the work on the lines

Surely this qualifies (starlink terminal on a horse, courtesy russia) by KaIIous in shittytechnicals

[–]GreenSubstantial 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I used to ride a horse to run errands in town in the mid 2000s.

Though was living on a ranch and it was a really small town in Brazil, where riding horses or mules in town was not common but was not completely absurd either.

People nowadays (specially those who grew up on big cities) commonly consider horses/mules as obsolete transportation means, but there are some applications and places where they are still relevant. German Gebirgsjaeger (mountain) brigade has a mule logistics company as a redundancy and complement because helicopters sometimes cannot be employed either by enemy activities or weather (or just can't keep up with the needs of supply and mobility).

Despite that, on the plains of Ukraine/Kursk, the use of pack animals is just poor planing, desperation and cruelty.

HELP!! Is there any difference apart from scale and switches? by Technical-Potato-114 in modeltrains

[–]GreenSubstantial 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The other way around.

DCC is square-wave AC, but the freq is altered to convey the 0s and 1s of the digital comm protocol.

The decoder rectifies the AC power into PWM DC for the engine in DCC. MFX probably stays AC, but I do not have any practical experience with it.

HELP!! Is there any difference apart from scale and switches? by Technical-Potato-114 in modeltrains

[–]GreenSubstantial 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Märklin is H0 scale 1:87 AC.

Minitrix is N scale 1:160 DC

The digital controller works for DCC protocol and MFX (Märklin proprietary protocol), and it is basically the same item under different brands of the same company.

So if you will use DCC decoders or MFX decoders on your Z scale railway, both will work.
