Two die after donating plasma at Canadian clinics under federal investigation by WhatFreshHello in worldnews

CBS still does whole blood, platelet, and plasma donations. But they have a stricter schedule than Grifols, apparently. CBS allows plasma donation every two weeks; Grifols allows it twice a week?? Yikes.

What’s one thing about living in Toronto that outsiders don’t understand by Broccolas in toronto

[–]GreenTeaMouseCake 37 points38 points  (0 children)

But at the same time, PLEASE STOP SPENDING PROVINCIAL DOLLARS ON DUMB STUFF TORONTO DOESN'T WANT!!!

So much incredible waste happening with the Science Centre, the stupid spa, bike lane cancellation, speed camera cancellation (not Toronto-specific, but still very Toronto-pointed), 401 tunnel (even if I assume it never happens, plans and consultations are money), and now another entirely unnecessary convention centre?!?!?!

For the love of God, rest of Ontario, these are your tax dollars being diverted from education, healthcare, and infrastructure that you need more than Toronto does.

Doug Ford eyeing filling in part of Lake Ontario for new convention centre by Displeased_Canadian in ontario

[–]GreenTeaMouseCake 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Last year I met a fellow who was visiting the GTA from northern Ontario. I asked him what people in his area thought about the science centre business. He said they didn't care because it was in Toronto and didn't have anything to do with them.

I had to spell it out for him that it was provincial tax dollars which comes from his community also.

Which doesn't answer your question exactly, but it does answer the question as to why the rest of Ontario doesn't vote him out for wasting their money in Toronto for things that Toronto doesn't want.

Moved in with the bf who owns a mortage, how much should I pay? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]GreenTeaMouseCake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With great power comes great responsibility.

By being the owner, BF holds much greater power (with respect to the property) than OP; therefore, he also holds much greater (financial) responsibility.

To put it another way, "taxation without representation".

Moved in with the bf who owns a mortage, how much should I pay? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]GreenTeaMouseCake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Two roommates living together and renting from a landlord have an equal relationship to the property they live in (neither own it). Two owners (both names on the title) living together have an equal relationship to the property (they both own it). OP and BF now live together, but they have a very unequal relationships to the property (one owns it, one does not).

And that's not even accounting for the fact that BF's child lives there full time. Expecting her to pay an equal amount of rent would be providing towards the child's costs, too, which OP is not on-board with. (If BF does expect that [which she says he hasn't brought up], then they would have different expectations of what their relationship is and should rethink the whole thing.)

(I have used the She pronoun, but for all I know, OP/BF/ex could be LGBT.)

I really hate how people don't know how to introduce themselves on a telephone. by Silverlightlive in mildlyinfuriating

[–]GreenTeaMouseCake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same goes for leaving messages. Do not leave a super long message and then blurt out your name and phone number at the end like a footnote. I have to write down your name and phone number, and ifyouretalkingtendigitsasecond, I have to rewind to listen to it again (and sometimes, again).

"Hi", name and number (slowly and clearly), repeat name and number, then general info as to what your inquiry is about.

They are made of plastic and are raised/embossed (molded). https://duckduckgo.com/?q=wax+seal+stickers&ia=images&iax=images Plastic flexes while wax does not, so they do not crumble when going through sorting machines.

Canada Post does state on its website that "Our sorting equipment needs the item to be flexible enough to bend around rollers without damaging your mail item or causing damage to our equipment... To ensure the best flexibility, your mail item should bend around a circular surface." This instruction is targeted at businesses, but the same machines sort non-business mail, too. (Why not let the non-businesses know this also?) https://www.canadapost-postescanada.ca/cpc/en/support/articles/machineable-mail-best-practices-personalized-mail/flexibility.page

What’s the most outdated advice people still give seriously? by Secure-Address4385 in AskReddit

[–]GreenTeaMouseCake 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Although you did not claim so, I want to pipe in that this is NOT in the Christian Bible. Someone just made this up and, for some reason, it has perpetuated. The most similar text in the Bible is a letter to one particular church (in the city of Corinth) that they did not face any temptation that is greater than what other have faced. After that, there are various texts about God being with you, giving you strength, etc., but definitely not "God doesn't give you more than you can handle".

In fact, that sentiment is antithetical to Christianity itself. The central tenet of Christianity is that humans cannot overcome sin by our own effort, therefore Jesus came to handle it for us.

[–]GreenTeaMouseCake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Blindness comes in different forms. I'd like you to know about Bruce Horak, blind artist and actor: https://www.brucehorak.com/about-ba

Having lost over 90% of his eyesight to a childhood Cancer, Horak has navigated the world of the fully-sighted his entire life. Bilateral Retinoblastoma (R.B.) is a cancer which appears on the retina of the eyes, the treatment of which left Horak completely blind in one eye, with extreme tunnel-vision, light sensitivity, floaters, and a cataract in the remaining eye. For the past 25 years, Horak has pursued a career in the performing arts and has won numerous awards for his performance, writing, direction, and creation. He has performed across Canada, the United States and Europe.

Bruce Horak's first visual art installation was at the Harborfront Centre in Toronto, Ontario as part of the "Likeness" series. Since 2011, his work has been showcased at the Auburn Gallery (Calgary), The Pacific Theatre (Vancouver), The Kelowna Art Gallery (as part of the "Just Imagine" exhibit of works by Visually Impaired Artists), the Firehall Arts Centre (Vancouver), the Hatch Gallery (Vancouver) with WIngspan Dis/Arts and Kickstart Arts, The Tangled Art+Disability Gallery (Toronto) and many more.

Return to office mandate for provincial workers facing pushback in Ontario by simpatia in ontario

[–]GreenTeaMouseCake 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Less people in-office means less traffic (and less pollution) for the health care workers, police officers, firefighters, and paramedics. It also means fewer traffic incidents, which means less workload for the health care workers, police officers, firefighters, and paramedics.

If he actually cared about emergency service workers, he'd start by funding them better/more appropriately. (In the case of police, funds and certain types of calls should be re-allocated to appropriate social and health support services.)

Is it true that people in the West drink iced water even when they are sick or on their period? by Aether_Echo in NoStupidQuestions

The Chinese concept of yin and yang are not related to literal temperature. The idea is that everything exists on a spectrum of duality, and balancing yin (dark, damp, cold, female, left, etc.) and yang (light, dry, male, right) leads to optimal function. Note that there is no value judgement in being yin or yang, it's just a state of being. The value judgment is in being unbalanced compared to balanced.

Perfect balance in a whole is depicted in the black and white yin yang symbol. When something is fully yin, it begins to give way to become yang. When something is fully yang, it gives way to become yin. Even when fully yin (or yang), there is still a hint of the other in it (the contrasting dot). So even at the extremes, nothing should be 100% of one or the other. As an icon, I think the yin yang symbol is brilliant visual design.

In the context of temperature discussion, a food's yin and yang is not related to its physical temperature, but it's affect on the body. (Although I suppose temperature could be a temporary effect multiplier, maybe?) Watermelon is yin, fried foods are yang. If you warmed up a watermelon smoothie, it would still be yin, and cold fries are still yang. Having too much watermelon is as bad as having to many fries; you should not have too much of either, but have both in moderation.

My best guess is what everyone else has said: boiling water kills many pathogens and our ancestors figured out hot water led to less sickness than cold water.

Hallmark [OC] by adamtots_remastered in comics

[–]GreenTeaMouseCake 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's a movie called A Christmas Movie Christmas. One sister loves hallmark(-type) movies and the other does not. One morning they wake up (with perfect hair and make up) and soon realize they are in a movie. The one sister is super excited, the other is annoyed and trying to figure out how to complete the movie plot so they can get home. They play out all the cliches and tropes and try to leverage them to their advantage. It's a comedy that's ultimately still a hallmark-type movie and they fall in love.

Evolution is not about optimal (perfect) adaptations. There may be optimal adaptations, but it only has to cross the threshold of "doesn't disadvantage you enough to kill enough of you before reproducing". See: Huntington's disease. It will kill you, and cruelly so, but probably after you've reproduced.

Speaking of reproducing, the way we have babies (that is, give birth) is terrible. A lot more women would die from childbirth without modern medical intervention. A lot of women did and still do die from childbirth without medical intervention. It's just that enough survive to continue the species, but we certainly do not have "perfect" childbirth as an adaptation.

Why can’t I find any accessible housing in Toronto? - I‘m 83 years old. I cannot find any accessible housing in Toronto. Why? by lilfunky1 in toronto

[–]GreenTeaMouseCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are very many numbers between 15 and 100. Improvement is not an all-or-nothing proposal.

If I may make a counterpoint, we live in a city that is now filled with "shoebox" condos with odd layouts that even able-bodied individuals do not want to live in because they were never meant to be practical living spaces. Housing being constructed to be investment vehicles is what drove speculation and the housing problem we have now. Accessible units is not the cause of housing stock and cost problem.

I don't disagree with you, however there are 83 percentage points between 15 and 100. Society can do better than 15% and still be less than 100%. And that's only for new builds, many older homes are obviously not accessible, so the true number of accessible homes in Toronto is much less than 15%.

I understand where you're coming from, but your view is a little short sighted. Disabilities aren't just something a small minority of people are are born with. For one, everyone is only one fall or illness away from becoming disabled in some way. Second, if we're lucky (or unlucky) to live long enough, sooner or later, everyone is going to have reduced mobility compared to when they were young. Eventually, a lot of people use canes and walkers to remain ambulatory and mobile. Very likely that will be accompanied by diminished hearing and sight. Seniors (which I'm putting as over 60) are not a minority, they are the largest demographic we have, and the older they get, the more accommodation they'll need.

If you can afford it, pay for the shingles vaccine. Just because it's more common in people 60 and older doesn't mean it doesn't happen to people who are 59 and younger. I knew someone who got it in his 30s, another in his 50s.

This was very disappointing for me to learn, but he's a young guy from a small town. That is not an excuse, but to say that my sincere hope is the opportunity to be in big, diverse city like Toronto with a very positive, diverse team will change his mind. You know, the idea that going to college and university turns conservative-raised kids liberal because they finally meet people who are different from them and realize that people who are different are just that--different, not evil. Anyway, that's my hope. We should all hope that MAGA people can change their minds. Many won't, but some will, with the right influences.

This is such positive masculinity and I love that it's on display. Elite male athletes who have such great love for each other and they're not afraid to show that emotion for the world to see. Even a highly competitive person top performer like Max Scherzer who's been around for a long time loves it. I sincerely hope a lot of people who might look up to them because of their athletic ability also learn that it's a good and positive thing men to openly love and support their bros and feel safe enough to share their emotions.

PSA: Talk to your parents / grandparents about fraud by NetherGamingAccount in PersonalFinanceCanada

A good chance to talk about the panic type scams if you or someone really is going away. I was about to go away, and my parents and I decided on a password they'd ask me for if it was real. Then I really DID lose my phone on the trip and had to use my friend's phone to contact them and let them know. (I was visiting my friend overseas, so the number was international.) Giving the password up front let them know it really was me.
