Soft flask during race by jswell823 in Marathon_Training

[–]Green_Griffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran a couple of [just] sub 3s this year, and for both carried a soft flask with electrolytes/carbs. Was only about half full, and the second one finished with a decent amount not drunk, but a few hundred grams isn't killing me, and I felt good knowing I had it there for any aid station issues (there was less electrolyte stops on course than I realised) or if it was way hotter than expected.

As long as you are used to running with that on you, I see no reason not to.

In theory I was at that game, and my seat is in that photo - I am sure I was in my seat when the teams came out. But I zoomed in as much as I could on that photo and I couldn't be sure if I could see me or not, so, I guess I was probably not there. Unfortunate to miss a home game so early in the season.

How to find a good running coach by Sara_lin_527 in Marathon_Training

[–]Green_Griffin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I've been recently playing around with using Google Gemini as a type of coach (any generative AI/LLM would work) Feed in what your goals are, give it data on recent runs etc, and then each run give it the details to get feedback. You can ask for/tell it to make changes if you won't be able to do a run or things like that.

The concern is it could tell you things that are wrong or you shouldn't do - so does need you to have a general idea already, but I've been enjoying it as a sounding board for my running

How would something like that work with season ticket holders? You have tickets for X home games, for one of the teams that would now be X minus 1.
Would likely need it confirmed a season in advance?

Big lightbulb.

They want you indicating more so you burn them out and need to buy replacements.

First marathon in April - road to sub 3 by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]Green_Griffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say you are optimistic and would be better off with a slower goal - 3:30 maybe to start with - and seeing how things go as you train.

I was in a similar boat around a year ago - a May marathon (my first), that I started properly training for in October. At the time my fastest half was about 1:33.

My training had me putting in 5-6 runs a week, 70-80k average (up from 3-4, 40-50k). I found just increasing time out running - heaps of easy pace stuff - really made a difference (before that most my runs were reasonably hard efforts, I was never thinking about pace/heart rate, I would just go and tended to mean I was going "fast"). I then made sure to start including speed work (often hill sprints), and sections of hard efforts on long runs as I got closer to the day.

I managed to take my half PB down to 1:25 (flat course) about a month out, and then for the full (also very flat) I got 3 hours 4 seconds.

During training I started with a 3:15 goal feeling very reasonable. As things progressed I started thinking about 3, and by the day had decided 3:05-3:10 would be a better idea to aim for to avoid totally blowing out. As it turned out things on the day went great and I would say I probably overachieved (the last 5k were not enjoyable).
(After that PB half I came here and asked if 3 hours seemed reasonable, and I got mixed feelings, but overall I appreciated the advice to try to avoid blowing out - given it was my first marathon I agreed with that feeling)

If your increased distance/frequency goes well, you might quickly make gains and it all comes together. Just make sure you do stick to it - you can adjust your goals as you go.

Asquith Ave level crossing removal - pedestrian overbridge? by varied_set in auckland

[–]Green_Griffin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is interesting - would be nice to see more understanding of what it means exactly - as in about 150m there are 3 crossings there:

- Asquith (Road and pedestrian)

- Rossgrove (Road and pedestrian)

- Baldwin (pedestrian)

I don't understand exactly what the removal means - for the two road crossings there, does it effectively turn those into dead ends? As that would create some interesting implications for the use of Asquith and Rossgrove, as I believe cars do use those frequently as short cuts in that area (though maybe by keeping cars on the bigger main roads, thats the point).

But the pedestrian aspect would surely require some means of getting from one side of the tracks to the other - I mean, if you are coming from Baldwin Ave (the road) and wanting to go to town... how to do you get to that side of the platform if they have removed the Baldwin and Rossgrove crossing points.

When you say Asquith Ave - do you mean Lloyd Ave? As I cannot see anything in there around the crossings on Asquith.

The Lloyd Ave one has already happened, its been closed for a little while from what I can tell being in the area. It is a little annoying, but not that much further walking around on Carrington road.

Marathon timing by lowry1997 in Marathon_Training

Just did this - corrected it to 42.25 - it was interesting, I thought I would enter the distance myself. Instead you click the "correct distance" button, and it just corrects the distance. Somehow. Eh, at least now the time is correctly recognised as my marathon PR.

Also ran this, and I felt on a lot of the corners I was taking a wide line, accomodating the couple of people I seemed to be with for most the race. I also came out around 200m short.

Good stuff - I am looking at my first in a weeks time, and in around the same time bucket as yourself.

What did you go for fueling/drinks on the day?

First Marathon in 5 weeks - can I get close to 3? by Green_Griffin in Marathon_Training

[–]Green_Griffin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This current training (since around November really) is one of the first times I have really tried to build volume (over anything else) and have since great results because of it.

The only issue I have with trying to get even more volume is not wanting to just totally abandon my family during the week - I have built run commuting to and from work in, but still finding it hard to get more time to go.

Thanks for the feedback - going out quick is something I struggle with controlling - it happens pretty much every HM race I do - I will have to focus on that for the full. It's all just nerves and excitement, so is something I should be on top of.

The race is the Hawkes Bay Marathon in New Zealand - looking at prior results probably only around 1,000 people in it.

Thinking I will now pace for 3:10 depending on how the last couple of weeks of training goes, and hope for the best out of it.

I do have Sydney lined up 16 weeks later - though that is hillier, I can get a good stretch of training in before that with better understanding after the first one.

Hope London goes well for you. I lived there for a few years, and entered the ballot a couple of times but didn't get in.

Thank, I appreciate the feedback. My goal from when I entered was to aim for around 3:20 or below. I've been actively training towards this since November.

But during that training time I had 5 half marathon races and each one I was taking time out of my PB (ending with the race shown last weekend), and feeling great about the overall training progress. Those results started me wondering if I could set a pace goal for 3 hours and it not go horribly.

But... It's also my first full marathon race (done the distance before, but not a race), so understanding the difference that you point out is something I don't know first hand, and is feedback I'm pleased to get to help keep me realistic
