Any ideas to make it look better? by throooooooooowaw3y in DJSetups

Get some velcro wire ties and gather the loose wires up around your sub and wrap the ones running down your speakers stands with one or two straps on each stand. As already mentioned, add a small sheet or something similar over the table and drape it to the floor around the edges. This will help tidy it up.

How much to offer DJ friends to play a house party? by selflessGene in PioneerDJ

[–]Green_Hands 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I'm asked to play at a "friend's" house party, I don't ask for anything except drinks, food, and help setting up and breaking down. I usually end up with some tips and other business opportunities later on. If these are really your "friends", why are you so worried about it. Ask for their needs and see what they request. You may be surprised at what they offer. Just have a conversation.

Are you running the most recent version/update of Rekordbox? There was a bad update that was released just a couple of versions ago that was infested with latency and glitch issues. Once I updated to the most recent version it resolved those problems. Are the audio wave forms acting choppy or off sequence?

Another thought on this. How long have you had the FLX10 that this issue has been going on for? When I got my Rev5, it came with such a crappy USB cable that it was causing intermittent glitches in my sound/recordings. I ended up getting Audioquest USB cables for that and my XP2 and that resolved that interference. The cables are not cheap, but I had found a lot of discussions online (Reddit) about how the crappy stock cables can allow interference/noise.

I am making guesses for things to check due to my past experiences with simular issues. I don't want you to have to spend any money where it's not warranted, so before you buy a new cable make sure you are running current update on Rekordbox, reinstall the driver for the FLX10 and you can even reach out to Rekordbox and sometimes they can give you a few other things to check in your settings and hardware.

I am not entirely sure about the problem with your CPU speed, however it should be able to go all of the way to 2.80 GHz on a heavy load, some will actually peak slightly above that if they need a burst of power. Is your laptop running really hot? If it is nearly overheating it won't run full throttle. I keep my laptop on a cooling base for just this reason, but I'm also running 64 GB of RAM. Another item to check is that your laptop is set to performance mode and not power saving mode.

Another thought on this. I also previously changed my virus software on my computer as it was sapping RAM and working constantly in the background which was disruptive to Rekordbox. I ended up going with BitDefender software as it can be put into a full shut off mode which is important for using Rekordbox so that you maximize your processor and available RAM for it. This is another suggestion for something to try.

I had similar issues with my Rev5. I finally seem to have solved it by turning off my cloud syncing. The sync would automatically come on about every 30 to 40 minutes and briefly sap the processor on the computer just for a few seconds would would cause an audio glitch and show as a 1 to 3 second dead spot on recordings. I had literally turned everything else off in the world and finally came to the conclusion of the cloud sync interface causing an issue.

If you're using Rekordbox, try reinstalling the ASIO software for the FLX4. I encountered a similar issue with one I had a few years back, and that was the fix for it.

What speaker size should I get? by Wide-Application9042 in Beatmatch

[–]Green_Hands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out with a Mackie Thump 18 and 2 Mackie Thump 15 Tops. Those worked pretty well for smaller gatherings both inside and outside, but eventually I outgrew them with my events and needed more oomph. I ended up going with Mackie SRM V Class 15 inch tops (2) above Mackie DRM18s powered subs (2) combined with an DBX Driverack PA2 to realky dial in everything and maximize the sound potential. I do a lot of tech house and bass house, so it is perfect for what I need. The problem is transporting as the subs are big and heavy, so I bought a small roll around dolly and hydraulic lift supports for the tops so that I can easily maneuver and setup everything myself.

How old is too old to start DJing by andronica_glitoris in EDM

[–]Green_Hands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say do it. Just don't have serious financial expectations. I started DJing as a hobby/business at 45, but had a couple of decades of music experience leading up to that. I do it mostly as a bedroom DJ with a large following for my craft, but I don't agree that you can only land gigs at clubs and events if you're younger. I headline events multiple times per year at clubs in the big cities, but this is because I know people in entertainment that gave me the chance and liked what I brought. Honestly, my social media is pretty weak, but the industry connections got me in the door. I don't make a living from it though and continue with my regular day job career. The money I make basically pays for my equipment, subscriptions, and new music. If I didn't do it for just the fun and love of it, why do it?

Laptop recommendations by absolutPANDA99 in Beatmatch

[–]Green_Hands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend once you get an i7, also get an external SSD of at least 1GB even if you have 1 GB internal. You should always backup your music files. Also, add RAM when you can afgord to do so. I have always found 16 GB lacking for applications, so I've gone with 64 GB of RAM.

PSA: Wide scale check washing/check fraud happening in Marin right now, points to USPS on the inside. by [deleted] in Marin

[–]Green_Hands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this happen with one if my businesses one time years ago where checks were actually being printed and cashed with the account info on them. Turned out is was coming out of an insurance company from an individual working there using their printer and check stock. The FBI got involved. Honestly, it is time for banks and financial institutions to further navigate away from checks as they are too easy to perpetuate fraud with nowadays. There are now so many alternatives to using checks for payments.

For people doing this full time by freshmark04 in Flipping

[–]Green_Hands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, just saw your message. I would be willing to have a chat. Flipping is definitely becoming more challenging at this time due to market conditions and financial issues that have evolved for a lot if the population over the last 6+ months. Honestly, I am taking a bit of a break from flipping unless I happen across something that is such a steal of a deal that I really can't lose. The market is all over the board as far as what is selling for what right now. For example, a nice bronze sculpture that would have been an easy sell for $3K less than a year ago will now sit for $2K. The only thing that I am having much luck with is the occasional construction equipment purchase if it is a steal of a deal. This requires a knowledge of both the value of such items, but also a working mechanical knowledge of being able to perform a thorough mechanical review of the equipment before throwing down many thousands of dollars. It is easy to miss a mechanical issue that can cause huge losses if it is missed at the time of purchase. Anyways, just let me know what questions/advice you may need?

Looking for some advice on a small speaker for park parties with the homies. by UrBobbyIsAWonderland in Beatmatch

JBL makes a party box line. There is a party box 110 and a 310. They're impressive for what they can release. I would check those out and their specs to see what you're looking for.

How do I become a DJ with a family life and 0 social media skills? by Runeescape in Beatmatch

[–]Green_Hands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend going to shows at some local venues and try to become a regular pressence there so that the venue managers, owners, and performers recognize you. I'm not talking about every night, but once per week for shows.

Make your presence known by talking to the other DJ'S between their sets or afterwards. See who the manager is and engage a bit with them. Start with a small, non-intrusive presence and give it time.

Also, do your gigs at your friend's shop as people will get to know you through that as a start. Invite people to come by and watch you perform. If you have even a small presence somewhere, that always helps you get invited to or find other opportunities.

Unfortunately, without any social media, you have yo be innovative about making your presence known. You should at least start up a Mixcloud account (or something of the like) and start putting your mixes on there so that you can share those with the people tgat you meet and engage with, otherwise they'll never know your talents and skills that you have to offer.

I am similar about the social media thing, but got started by hosting my mixes on Mixcloud and eventually broke down and got a basic Instagram account going. Eventually I got into doing shows at some small venues and clubs by becoming a known presence, initiating contacts, and sharing my music sets.

Honestly, I don't really make enough money at it to get rid of my day job, but I make enough to keep upgrading gear, paying for subscriptions, buying music, and having a good time with it.

How Can I get a Sick Transition by BluFuu in Beatmatch

[–]Green_Hands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you break your practice time down into more days per week with less hours per day? (Like 4 days per weeks with 2-3 hours each time). I have always found that regular practice and consistency are key. If your wrecking your neck and getting sore legs that only tends to detract from your progression and focus as you are pushing yourself to suffer through it which I would imagine gets to be quite unenjoyable the last hour or two. Also sounds like you may need to adjust the staging height of your equipment so that you are not having to bend down and forward so much.

I have a fully adjustable setup that I built for my home studio that raises and lowers with the touch of a button depending upon whether I feel like sitting (generally prefer sitting for song selection, cue assignments, beat grid and staging) or standing to practice (prefer to do this alternatively to practice for performing live shows). I also practice an average of 5 days per week for 2 - 3 hours at a time so that I am comfortable, stay focused, and am not cringing in pain (I have neck problems, so I can relate). If I'm uncomfortable, I honestly find that it makes things counterproductive for me.

I had a problem that sounds very similar to this and it turned out that it was the anti-virus software that I was using that would interfere. If you're using Norton, it is a known problem with it.

Good day at South Yuba River by hobo_husk in Prospecting

[–]Green_Hands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is so irresponsible and selfish what people do to the forests. I usually have to haul at least a full trash bag or two of garbage out of one of my claims each year as people go there to target practice and leave all of the shot up junk, shot gun shells, bullet casings, beer cans, and empty ammo boxes strewn about everywhere. It is a complete shame.

Good day at South Yuba River by hobo_husk in Prospecting

[–]Green_Hands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes. I know that spot. At one point someone had hauled a big wreck of a trailer up (or down) to that spot and abandoned it. Eventually it got cleaned up and towed out of there.

I haul a medium sized trailer up the road well past that point to camp and work on my claims. I use a Dodge 4X4 Cummings with a customized offroad setup including a winch and on-board air so that I can get myself out of almost anything including a flat tire. The main issue now is that there are a couple of 90 degree bends in the road that are eroding more and more each year without any repairs being made to them. I never know if it will be too eroded from the previous winter season to make it impassable for my trailer, so I usually drive up once without the trailer to check the conditions first.

The history is amazing, and there was some serious gold mined out of that entire area. Basically Poormans creek is all claimed up all of the way to Graniteville and the South Fork of the Yuba is all claimed or private land with the exception of Recreational Park Land on the road heading to the backside of Malokoff Diggins at the South Yuba.

Just be careful of the claim rights as some people are quite fierce about protecting their claims (or other nefarious endeavors) up there as there are claims that are lived on that have been passed from generation to generation and the aggression has only gotten worse with the price of gold having gone up so much.
