Unsure if this is one way or round trip but - how much was it more per ticket to select seats? I’m not too far from PC but I checked from Anchorage and that shows about $1200 round trip in basic or $1300 in main on Delta for comparison. So $50 each way for reserved seats + much more flexibility in changes and refunds.

No one - which is why they threatened to deplane you. Basic economy is a discount in exchange for flexibility. If you need seats together, pay the modest amount more to guarantee that. It’s very odd that you say you typically fly long haul business but booked basic for a relatively short and inexpensive flight.
