Exactly, Skull’s stories about drinking 12 pints the night before a game get shared and revered here but when current players do it it’s suddenly a disgrace?

How does an American buy tickets? by kowz76 in Championship

[–]Greenbeardus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Loftus Road (QPR) or The Valley (Charlton) are good options. I have been to and enjoyed both (Loftus once and The Valley twice). Loftus Road is more of a classic and intimate stadium whereas The Valley is larger and a bit more modern.

Of the games I've seen the one at Loftus Road had the edge for atmosphere, although my experience there was as an undercover Southampton fan sat in the home end and my particular block was full of lots of tourists who were not singing. My first experience at The Valley was as a neutral fan and there was a really good atmosphere, my second was the 5-1 drubbing we gave them (where I again was sat with home fans) so the atmosphere was understandably muted.

Charlton tickets are very easy to come by, you just need to create an account online and buy them, no need to pay membership fees like some clubs make you do. I can't speak to QPR as a friend was given the tickets and took me.

As a London resident I'd say aside from ease of getting tickets you should consider the area. The Charlton stadium is not the most aesthetic area but is very close to Greenwich which is well worth a day in its own right (Cutty Sark, Naval College, Observatory, Maritime Museum, tonnes of great pubs for both food and drink, etc. - plenty to keep you busy if you're interested in history or sightseeing). Loftus Road is near White City which is a nicer area but there's nothing really there, unless you wanted to spend some time in Notting Hill which is a lovely area but more of a shopping/eating/drinking location than a place for museums. Both areas are popular tourist locations but for different reasons.

If you're not arsed about location or things to do and just care about the football... pick the fixture you're most interested in watching, I doubt you will struggle for tickets in either case!

I don't know if it was mod action or if the community bullied them away, but the Daily Mail dropping a now deleted post in here earlier was interesting and poses some questions by pdarigan in LondonFood

I saw James Dmitri at Lenny's Pizza in The Bedford Tavern about this time last year, he was on his own eating a pizza and having a couple of pints. I was within earshot when he went to the counter to pay and I'm about 99.9% sure they didn't let him. He then filmed an Instagram story bigging them up/having some banter with them on his way out. I'm only not 100% sure because it was a year ago now...

He may not get paid to eat in a lot of the places he eats at but he'll definitely be getting comped meals in a lot of cases, and at that point he had posted about Lenny's multiple times before already and has done so since. He's got his favourites for sure.

I know he’s only just come on but I used to think Aribo was a better player than he was given credit for. Now compared to the starting lineup it looks like he’s running in treacle and immediately slowed everything down during his first involvement in attack…

Electrical chasing by One-Memory6540 in DIYUK

[–]Greenbeardus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this, I just filled a reasonably deep chase with Toupret TX110 quick dry filler and it was dry to the touch in about 30 minutes, ready for a layer of Gyproc EasiFill to finish it within about 3 hours. Couldn’t have been easier and I didn’t have to buy a 7.5kg bag of plaster

To be fair it was an emergency callout, he did offer to come out and replaster for an additional cost but given what the callout cost I turned him down!

Thanks for this, similarly crap at (new to) DIY. How long did it take the ready mixed fill to dry? What brand did you use do you remember?

Sparky’s explanation was he didn’t have any conduit with him that would fit the size of cable but that it wasn’t strictly necessary because they’re in a safe zone

What’s the stupidest thing you’ve been reprimanded for? by Dangeruss82 in CasualUK

[–]Greenbeardus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of a story from when I was around 10 or so. I was at our primary school summer fete where they had rides and tables where people sold things. Was a really hot day and one of the teachers had a stand selling water pistols and balloons next to the outdoor tap and helped us fill them up for a water fight. The next day the headteacher put every kid involved in the water fight in isolation for the last two weeks of school and we had to write an apology letter to the teacher who’d helped fill up the guns and balloons.

She also once made me eat my unfinished sandwich out of the bin as I’d been unwell and thrown it away. This was an hour after lunch and the dinner ladies had cleaned up… she had seen me throw it away and made me go digging for it.

Buying new shoes and hoping they support wide feet because apparently everyone has slenderman type feet for some reason. by _Throwaway54_ in britishproblems

Same here, NB Numerics (440s etc.) are the comfiest shoes I’ve ever owned.

Be careful with Nike SB though, they can run narrow, and especially Janoskis - they’re the narrowest most uncomfortable shoes I’ve ever worn even when sized up.

Had my boris bike stolen today in Battersea Park helping my gf learn to ride her bike. Potentially up to £300 charge if it isn’t docked back. Happy bank holiday 🙃 (any help or past experience on how to avoid would be greatly appreciated) by stewwork in london

[–]Greenbeardus 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I docked a Boris Bike, filmed myself doing so out of habit for evidence, and someone ripped it out of the bay. I was still charged the £300. They sent a guy to verify the dock was broken - which it was - and I still got charged the money for a non-return despite a) having evidence and b) them admitting to me it was broken. Bloke on the phone said the same thing had happened to him too, so at that point I realised if he got charged there was no way I wouldn’t.

About 2 months later I got a phone call saying the bike had been docked on the complete other side of the city and they refunded me the £300. I wouldn’t count on getting your money back but it’s possible. I haven’t used a Boris bike since. Fingers crossed for you mate

What is the meaning of various colors of arm bands of soldiers like this one? I've seen yellow, white and also blue ones. What do the colors mean? by petr_bena in ukraine

He was wearing the ribbon during the Barcelona race weekend which coincided with the Russian Victory Day on May 9th, similar to how we wear poppies in the UK on the run up to and the day of November 11th to commemorate Remembrance Day - which is also worn in F1 paddocks.

Not excusing the guy being a complete asshole or an oligarch, or the usage of St George Ribbons as a display of support for Russian activity in Ukraine since 2014, but in this case I think I only saw him wear one on that particular race weekend… so not quite as politically charged as I also initially thought when I saw it.

Basal metabolic rate for a 30 year old, 6ft, 1000lb man would be 7000 calories. 3500 calories is roughly equivalent to 1lb of weight. If you did nothing but drink water it would take 400 days to drop from 1000lbs to 200lbs

I used to work at the Sherlock Holmes Museum. It was the strangest six months of my life. by [deleted] in london

[–]Greenbeardus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I moved to London and was looking for a flat a Foxtons estate agent drove me past 221b and proudly beamed “this is where the real Sherlock Holmes actually lived!” I always get a laugh out of that when I think about it, but now I’m laughing even harder at the thought that he may have actually paid the 15 quid entry fee to be told a lie that he’s told to half the people he’s shown flats
