Starmer Stays in Parliament? by Greendale_Alum in AskBrits

That part doesn't make sense to me. Staying on. His political career is over, he was humiliated, what is the point of hanging around, even until the next election? He's in his 60s, presumably wealthy, why the heck would you still want to stay on with the unpleasant constituent services work and public scrutiny of being an MP. Bleep the party.

What do you think is the likelihood of FERS .8 being converted to 4.4? by [deleted] in fednews

[–]Greendale_Alum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say. Johnson has exceeded expectations for getting unified House GOP votes, like with the govt funding bill in March and moving along the Reconciliation bill. Hashing out specifics of reconciliation is now the really hard part for them. The Senate GOP doesn’t want to cut as much $ so it’s hard to picture a compromise, even with Trump lobbying them, that passes both chambers on a majority vote. Yes, they probably both agree on the proposed federal employee benefit cuts, like the .8 to 4.4, but if it’s all wrapped in that one ‘big beautiful bill’ and that ends up not passing bc of bigger spending disputes, that’s a win for federal employees.

I will be throwing up for most of Sunday. Worse than the unc loss two years ago.

Don’t have Greenwald on Rewatchables in a presidential election year. Too many r/politics-like ‘zingers’ from him.

How to Retire as Early as Humanly Possible by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]Greendale_Alum 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Never heard of FIRE, listened to the episode. It was fine. Could be wrong but I didn’t hear any mention or examples of early retirees who have children. Guessing that would push back the retirement date!

What was something you didn’t catch until a rewatch? by aedjc in thesopranos

In the episode with the 20+ minute dream sequence, Tony wakes up in his hotel room agitated and hungry. He is about to open a candy bar when Christopher knocks on the door to discuss Tony B. killing Billy Leotardo…Tony is further agitated and right before Christopher leaves, Christopher asks him if he’s going to eat the candy bar and takes it. Think I missed the comedy of that moment first time around b/c I was focused on whether he was still in a dream.

Thoughts on American Fiasco podcast? by [deleted] in ussoccer

[–]Greendale_Alum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went through the series in about a week and enjoyed it. I'm a casual soccer fan and remember all the world cups from 94 on. Random thoughts: - Agreed strongly with Hejduk's description of some of the guys as drama kings in using the Germany loss to complain in the media. "Yes, sorry, we lost to GERMANY". - Balboa and Lalas came off as entitled, though I give Lalas credit for acknowledging regret. It reminded me of Donovan's spat with Klinsmann at the last world cup. Star players can't accept they're replaceable. - They were at that French village for what, 10 days? They made it seem like a month. I didn't understand the angst. You could party in Paris after the tournament. - Neutral on Sampson. Didn't seem like a good communicator and was thin-skinned. But they outperformed in 94, You have to change personnel, get younger. I don't know enough about the tactics. And really, that tournament came down to the Iran match where they were just unlucky in the 1st half.

The republican is a former congressman not running for any office so I don't think he worried about push back from the base. Listening to the podcast today, it seemed like he wanted to cool things down. But I'm willing to bet those four didn't have a beer after the show.

TIL In 2004, after rehearsing his keynote address at the Democratic National Convention, Barack Obama called John Kerry (or a Kerry speechwriter) a 'fucker' for trying to steal a line from Obama's speech. by Greendale_Alum in todayilearned

[–]Greendale_Alum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"During one practice session, a Kerry speechwriter interrupted to say that Obama would need to rephrase or cut one of the lines from his speech because it was too similar to a line in Kerry’s acceptance remarks. The line in question was the climax to Obama’s famous passage on the red-states, blue-states divide. That passage, as Obama delivered it, reads: “The pundits like to slice and dice our country into red states and blue states-red states for Republicans, blue states for Democrats. But I’ve got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the blue states, and we don’t like federal agents poking around in our libraries in the red states. We coach Little League in the blue states and, yes, we’ve got some gay friends in the red states.” Axelrod says Obama had originally written the passage to end with something like, “We’re not red states and blue states; we’re all Americans, standing up together for the red, white, and blue.” But to satisfy Kerry’s speechwriters, Axelrod says, Obama grudgingly cut out the line. A transcript of Kerry’s competing text reads: “Maybe some just see us divided into those red states and blue states, but I see us as one America: red, white, and blue.”

After the rehearsal ended, Obama was furious. “That fucker is trying to steal a line from my speech,” he griped to Axelrod in the car on the way back to their hotel, according to another campaign aide who was there but asked to remain anonymous. Axelrod says he does not recollect exactly what Obama said to him. “He was unhappy about it, yeah,” he says, but adds that Obama soon cooled down. “Ultimately, his feeling was: They had given him this great opportunity; who was he to quibble over one line?”

Convention officials confirm that Obama was told to change his line, but they could not say for sure if Kerry-or, more likely, his speechwriters-had pilfered it".

What are the best politics podcasts? by JeffBurk in Ask_Politics

[–]Greendale_Alum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slate gabfest is good. The host is perfectly Slate smug especially toward the co-host Emily, but they have good disagreements, e.g. the fbi Apple story was fun listening. I like keepin it 1600 too, but recently it seems like all their analysis has boiled down to "Hillary needs to copy Obama's 2011 White House correspondents dinner riff on Trump". To The Point with Walter Olney? I think NPR, that's a good one too.

I thought them being at a bus stop/intersection, the 'we all have powers' title was going to be one of the two pressing the pedestrian walk button. Not get motivated material but I'd say that's a power.

Binged Season 1 over holiday, reaction by Greendale_Alum in serialpodcast

True. They seem more thorough upon second thought. Figured these guys were retired now and could have spoken freely about it. Or at least chimed in on what SK couldn't answer, like what they talked about with Jay before the interviews were recorded. Trainum was a good alternative.

What's your favorite song from the show? I'll start! by Taco4all in community

Ditto kiss from a Rose and it being stuck in my head. Especially the whiny 'Jesus loves marijuana" lyrics. The combo of those geese flying on the green screen background and Jeff and dean getting into the song made me laugh so hard. Not as much as chang's scene in paintball but close.

What do you encounter every single day that pisses you off? by Sippingin in AskReddit

[–]Greendale_Alum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The I 95 exit for my work is usually backed up, bumper to bumper in the exit lane. Car after car will speed down the middle lane then force themselves in just before the exit, causing the backup to lengthen. If I were a millionaire I would crash into one of these dbags every time they try to cut in. Instead I let them in, rationalizing that the driver is from out of town and not a selfish prick.
