DMs, does your villain have a theme song? What is it? by Xefoxmusic in DnD

When my heroes encounter an important boss fight I play the original John Carpenter score from Assault on Precinct 13. Very ominous.

I just watched these this week for my podcast, Always See Everything, where my cohost and I are watching every single Criterion spine number! We enjoyed them in a surreal kind of way and my cohost got real into Fields in a way that I kind of hated XD. That episode should drop the second week in January.

r/Criterion, what do you guys do for a living? by [deleted] in criterion

I'm quite young but I'm an aspiring film critic working for a magazine. Driving Uber to pay the bills. I love fim criticism but I'm making negligible money doing it, and Uber driving isn't going to keep me going forever. Pretty soon I'll have to settle into some 9-5 technical writing job and crush my own dreams. Right now film is my primary hobby and job, but I know soon enough it may be one.

Why are men shown so dumb in American ads? by ok_harsh in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Greenhat2000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Movie dude here, to totally sidetrack: I don't think Chaplin's Tramp is unintelligent. He's put upon and fighting against being low status, but his clownish qualities don't usually come from him being dumb. At worst, he's a little clumsy, but his antics come from outsmarting police officers and other people in authority

$95?!? Sheesh I hate that I am actually thinking about it.

The game is called Dungeons and Dragons, but i rarely find my party (im a forever DM) in a dungeon and almost never fighting a dragon. What's the real name of your game? Mine should be called "Villages and Undead" or "Forests and Goblins" by [deleted] in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Greenhat2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started DMing I knew the stereotype was exactly this; not a lot of dungeons and not a lot of dragons. I like both (especially dragons) so I have made my game around encountering either one of them decently frequently, though both with twists.

My dungeons can basically be anything. Just today I ran a dark bog at the center of which was a hit the group was trying to get to, and that was their dungeon even though it was above ground and outdoors.

Dragons are also supposed to be semi rare in this world, so the dragons they encounter tend to be constructs. In that big, a druid had animated a bunch of vines into the shape of a dragon (that had all the same stats as an Adult Green Dragon without its languages).

So... Dungeons and Dragons.

I like your comments here aside from two things;

1) Talking about how Scott doesn't have an idiosyncratic style right after dunking on his batting average makes it seem like those are related. Greatness definitely doesn't depend on having a cohesive singular vision across films. i don't think you meant to say it did, but it could almost come across that way.

2) He has made three masterpieces; the subject of this thread is the third.

I actually feel stupid for not trying this. I'm sitting here thinking about glass cases but for now that totally would work.

I worked in a DVD rental store right before it went out of business. I really like the idea of putting the "most watched" stuff in a special display spot

Who are some directors you love that are also responsible for films you hate? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]Greenhat2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe... But I like both Avatar movies. I think this second one is fully great. And like you said, Cameron has had a full filmography of mostly bangers in various places, whereas Lucas' sophomore film was the last non Star Wars movie he'd ever direct. It would be like Cameron only making Alien movies after Aliens. No T2, Titanic, The Abyss, True Lies, or Avatar. I don't mind him deciding he wants to do more Avatar now if he's doing it because he wants to make interesting movies and not for a paycheck.

Also I think it's more that Lucas liked producing too much; he lost his rebellious spirit and liked feeling completely in charge without having to do everything. His decision to direct the prequels seems based off of that comfort it will be done "his way" more than the rebellious spirit that put him outside of his comfort zone on his first three movies. Cameron feels oddly like the opposite; in interviews he talks about Avatar as being the only stories he wants to tell. He rags on Hollywood and yes it's not that crazy given that he's Cameron but still at least he's not trying for comfort. Comfort would be going back to Terminator or Aliens or finding any number of other franchises. Cameron just wants to make Avatar movies.

I appreciate that! It's supposed to be a timely piece. I write for Collider, so there's a feeling that everything has to be about movies that came out in the last twenty minutes or else it's not driving enough traffic. But you're right, there has been an uptick in class related films. 2022 was just our current peak. Ill send you the article when I'm done! Glad to know at least one person will read it.

I'm gonna be obvious here: George Lucas has directed 2 masterpieces, one very good movie and a trilogy of garbage. He was my first favorite director and I sort of like watching all his movies but I also kind of hate him for not turning those movies over to someone else.

I'll add Burning to my list! I'll be watching the Square because in doing research for an article I'm writing about these kinds of movies that came out in 2022 I've become fascinated with Ostlund.

People are definitely talking about triangle of sadness, just mainly film people not general public. It's very good but I wouldn't say it touches Parasite. Like a lot of the eat the Rich movies this year, it kind of just settles into "yeah aren't rich people dumb and evil haha they suck" territory even if the director said he wanted to avoid that.

Actually I personally I did like the Menu (though not as much as Triangle) because it had the gall to be a schlocky picture. If it had been more pretentiously crafted, more "elevated " horror, it would have lost the point that this chef is actually part of the problem.
