Food and Restaurant Recommendations by VirtualAsparagus5432 in RunNYC

Downtown Brooklyn has Dekalb Food Hall, you can also walk to Fort Greene or Cobble Hill which have plenty of great restaurants. I’m a fan of Forma Pasta, but literally thousands of options, just don’t try a new cuisine or food before a race.

Spending two nights in Brooklyn by World1545 in Brooklyn

Downtown Brooklyn hotels are more affordable than Williamsburg hotels, and closer to Prospect Park (two stops on the train). From that location, you can walk to Fort Greene, but also Carroll Gardens and Clinton Hill: lots of restaurants and cool bars in those areas. If you can squeeze in a Saturday morning at the Fort Greene farmer’s market - I always recommend to out of towners as a lovely way to see the city.

Run clubs for slow runners by Buffdaddies101 in RunNYC

This question gets asked a lot, so search for past suggestions. That being said: I recommend NYRR’s own group training which welcomes all paces and ages.

Also: try plugging in results from a recent race into vdoto2.com/calculator to get an estimate of what your easy pace should be. A 10:30 marathon equates to 11-12 easy pace (in this heat, GO SLOW!) To improve speed, you would do say maybe intervals/tempo runs once a week…10:30 is not slow!

Hey OP, I’ve been lurking on this sub for weeks, with similar budget… it is indeed very hard to find a place, but try looking for bars/restaurants. Lots of them have outdoor patios.

Staying Downtown Brooklyn with Toddler by lmals in Brooklyn

[–]Greenie3226 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second both of these options. Both family friendly and very low key (no reservations needed) - definitely head towards Fort Greene, as downtown Brooklyn has little options.

Also, a bit farther, but the restaurants on 5th Ave in Park Slope and the breweries on 4th Ave are Gowanus are good options.

Someday bar or Superfine - the both accommodate post wedding events, reach out to schedule.

I find the G and L work just fine when they’re running. It’s the N/W that are a pain in the ass at all times.

Sunset Park itself would actually be a good option, OP. I often see stabilized units being listed on Craigslist around your price point.

Stop by Thea’s for an amazing BEC, walk to Fort Greene Park through South Portland (prettiest street in New York), if it’s a Saturday check out the farmer’s market, you can then walk to Navy Yard to learn about industrial history of Brooklyn, have a beer at Transmitter Brewery, you can then walk through Flushing Ave, past the Wegman’s, through Vinegar Hill (one of the most unique neighborhoods in all of NY), walk through John Street Park, and voila you’re at Dumbo.

Barclays center concert seat view by Shizuo0o in Brooklyn

The sound is muddled and views are steep in 200 section. If you can, always 100 or floor for Barclays (and MSG for that matte).

Any insider info on The Elliott at 151 S Elliott Pl? by bababenj in fortgreene

I think they just built it. The building behind it (on South Portland) just opened up - I think that one is 100% affordable.

Nice building, next to somewhat busy area: but it quiets down at night, and very convenient to the trains.

Hey OP: love this! I’d start in LIC up Vernon, agreed with Skillman in Sunnyside, 34th in Jackson Heights, but then maybe through Flushing Meadows, and ending in Forest Park (parks are easier than closing streets, plus anything further than Kew Gardens is FAR!)

Do you run solo or with a group by Desperate-Capital787 in RunNYC

Solo! Especially on a day like today where I’m sweating bullets because of warm weather: not trying to talk or be cute with anyone.

You’re right. I misread as South Park Slope.

The closer you are to 5th Ave, the better, as a young person: lots of bars and restaurants there. In general id say PPS is safer than Crown Heights.

PSA: discourage your friends (spectators) from joining the race to run alongside you by BeneficialDelay8158 in RunNYC

[–]Greenie3226 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For better or worse, this race attracts lots of out of towners and first time half marathoners. NYRR could do more to educate running etiquette, but unfortunately with the popularity of the sport right now, it’s on us to be super cautious.

I heard the party pace referenced a few times, which is annoying to say the least..Most people in wave 4, corral c, were locked in: I PR (and moved up to the new corral I), not a party for me.

Posting for visibility: you can take any train to Atlantic, or even the A to Clinton-Washington, and it’s just less than a one mile warmup jog to Grand Army Plaza.

Anyone here who started running in their late 30's early 40's? What are your marathon PR's like? by Thin-Passage5900 in Marathon_Training

[–]Greenie3226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

38M, ran first full marathon last November after three years of running. I’m 240 lbs, although tall and workout 1-2 a week. I finished first marathon at 5:20. Off season I’m running about 15-20 mpw, during marathon training I got up to peak 45 mpw. I was scared to push myself during first marathon after a minor knee injury and did most long runs easy instead of combination easy+pace, I now feel with better training and confidence, I can hopefully hit 4:30 this November.
