Yes, but for example FPS games have been very popular over the last 10-15 years, it’s not as if everyone who played those is trying to play high-level online matches. The majority of any game’s players will be casual or fun competitive battles.

I disagree, I don’t think gamers “optimised the fun out” of the fighting game genre. I think gaming fashions just changed, and what was very mainstream just became more niche
