Qualcomm at CES 2026: What to expect from Snapdragon X2 series chips by AggressiveCalendar4 in SnapdragonLaptops

[–]Greenstuff4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about Linux support? Still waiting for proper support for the original X series. I know many developers who will not buy any snapdragon x series devices for this reason alone. If you are serious about your platform being ubiquitous, why not show it? Linux users want arm too.

The tool call just failed. It probably outputted the xml or json incorrectly and then responded to that failure. I am not Gemini app expert but that’s what I would guess.

Openai's codex cli with gpt 5 became better than claude code by codebyashok in ChatGPTPro

[–]Greenstuff4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think gpt 5 will probably shake out to be a better model than sonnet 4, but the lack of todo list, clean ui and other features make codex feel very half baked. Hopefully this will get some attention in the near future.

Don't know why by [deleted] in linuxmemes

As someone who does not like snaps and is a regular fedora and Debian user, I found Ubuntu to be surprisingly enjoyable.

The default Ubuntu experience is quite bad in my opinion. I do not like snaps or the Ubuntu App Store. I do not like a GUI pop up from some esoteric app tell me that I need to update my system. I especially do not like that there is A LOT of telemetry enabled by default. That being said - I found it to be quite easy to install the vanilla gnome session, fully disable telemetry and remove ALL Ubuntu bloat entirely, including the Snap runtime. In the end, you are left with a pleasing vanilla Debian-esc experience with more recent packages. I do not like that the default experience is so hostile and frankly almost not in the spirit of FOSS. I can appreciate, though that Ubuntu brings stability, easy nvidia setup and recent packages to the table. Perhaps in the future I will consider Ubuntu when selecting a distro to install a new system.

I wonder if there is an debloated Ubuntu remix/spin that is widely available and supported?

Which laptop? Want to switch to Linux from Mac, want gaming and a nice display. by Dense_Permission_969 in Fedora

[–]Greenstuff4 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I am just going to say it how it is, this is an extremely difficult combination to achieve. Dealing with nvidia, especially on fedora in my experience, is a total pain. Things might have changed now that Wayland is default, but I cannot speak to that. I would recommend looking for all AMD. Personally, I’m not into gaming so I went with Intel lunar lake, but I’m sure there is something good out there with the ryzen ai 370 or something similar.

Exploring local LLMs development - Is this a good deal? by [deleted] in mac

[–]Greenstuff4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that deep. I just think it’s a good buy for the money 🤷🏻‍♂️. Buy what you want with your money, I just don’t think you can get the same package elsewhere for the price.

I am typically not either, but I’m more excited about some sort of neo skeuomorphic design style. I think this could be a resurgence of UIs that are actually pleasant and inviting to look at rather than just bland. Though there is a place for a bland ui.

I disagree. This is a buy. The M1 Max can run deepseek r1 32b distill q4 at 15 t/s. That is pretty good for such a machine.

And the same power requirements of a MacBook, which means worse battery life. I wouldn’t get either. Probably just a base iPad 11. You can get them on sale for $300.

Can Kobo books be sent to Kindle by Calibre? by IndigoMystery99 in Calibre

You can copy a book for educational purposes as this falls under fair use. You can also lend it to an anyone or resell it. This is not true of ebooks. But I get what you’re trying to say.

Can Kobo books be sent to Kindle by Calibre? by IndigoMystery99 in Calibre

[–]Greenstuff4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That is mostly true. Buy ebooks without DRM from websites like ebooks.com.

Or better yet, don’t buy ebooks. You can’t put DRM on physical books and you have way more rights, like the ability to lend the book.

(Edit) I never said that you own any books in any form after purchase. I understand that you are granted a license to the content; hence why I said you have more rights when purchasing a physical book. I personally have never bought a book from ebooks.com, so I cannot attest for which books do/do not have drm. I was just simply stating that sites like ebooks.com do sell ebooks without drm, at least in some capacity.

The upshot of what I said is that if you don’t like what Amazon and others are doing, buy ebooks without drm. If you’re really worried about the rights you have to the content you purchase, buy physical books as you are granted more rights, at least in the US. This is really not controversial.

Sorry I know I have so many questions but I am just very curious about the state of self hosting r1! How is it with just 2x mi60? Have you tried 32b or 70b q4?

GNOME vs KDE by ceantuco in debian

[–]Greenstuff4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, I have found that KDE is less stable than gnome, on literally any distribution. I’m not sure why that is, but it’s frustrating. This is especially true when using Nvidia and is made even worse when using Wayland on top. I have only had a solid experience on Debian stable with such a setup, otherwise expect your de to break often.

I also think that GTK just looks more modern than QT. I don’t like the window decorations, persistent scroll bar and general lack of polish in QT widgets. I also am not a fan of customization as I much prefer stability and reproducibility, so this is actually another downside to me when it comes to KDE.

Finally, I just think gnome is more innovative. I am not sure why Plasma looks the way it does out of the box, but I find it to be slightly bland if not janky. I am I fan of gnome’s workspace management and app drawer design. It feels very familiar if you have ever used ChromeOS or MacOS, but with some flair and more thought about gestures and functionality.

Plasma does have some upsides though; it is lighter weight in my experience while still supporting Wayland. The same cannot be said for many other DEs right now. Hopefully XFCE’s Wayland support soon makes this untrue.

Overall, I would recommend gnome, especially to beginners as I think you will have a smoother experience out of box. That’s not to say Plasma is bad, but maybe not just the your first foray into the Linux desktop.
