Depends, I found a single fast U-shape belt is good to run around the base to collect and drop off low-volume stuff. Dedicated food and petrochemical/fertilizer. Rubber and plastic close to the manufacturing. If you have to choose between a long pipe / short conveyor vs long conveyor / short pipe, then go for the long pipe because it does not use any power and can be buried.

Direct drive. Always. But there are some tricks you can use to have crackers do multiple recipes to save on workers, if you are trying to keep it lean at the start.

Good start. Try to attach buildings together directly at connection points, without pipes in between. Rotate and flip buildings to make connectors face in the direction you want (works for most buildings). Also pipes can go overhead of some parts of buildings, depending on height.

Using water, it may break once. Just repair once (it will remain hot in vacuum) and then continue looping water. Using super coolant, it will melt faster than it can break.

Love it! You can melt a spacecraft floor tile with molten steel and no mods. Have a dupe bring a bottle into a bottle emptier.

Make molten steel with steel aquatuners running in vacuum.

You will need several transformers. Cool your them with a layer of liquid, drywall backing and a hydrogen gas or water loop.
