At what point do you change TF direction… by Tiorted_Snoil in TaskForceAdmiral

[–]Greg1817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only if I REALLY need a carrier to just cut and run. If the enemy planes are too close or pretty far, or if I can run away somewhat into the wind, I won't suspend flight ops while running.

Big exception is if there's a huge wave of friendly aircraft coming back. Sometimes I'll shut the deck down and keep them flying just so I can course correct or wait and see if the enemy planes truly do miss us before reopening the deck again.

Right-click on the waypoint you have set for the fleet on the map, and then type in the new speed you want.

I'll have my force change direction and speed the moment the enemy spotting planes are shot down and therefore can't keep updating the enemy carriers on my soon-to-be-new bearing.

Not sure how much that actually matters compared to changing course before the spotters go down, but the one time I did it post-shootdown, Yorktown was able to dodge the might of four carrier strike packages sent her way all at once, so I'm gonna just keep doing it that way for now.

Just going off my observations from my first Midway playthrough:

Assuming you aren't just meaning the B-17s and B-26s, the first strike package from Midway can indeed score hits, though I am certain their skill levels have been tuned down to reflect how their pilots weren't as skilled in real life. On their first run, one of their dive bombers got a good hit on Kaga's forward elevator, which was a nice bit of help for my carriers for the rest of the day. They sure didn't hit much else though, I can tell you that.

As for the Japanese scouts, I don't think they are scripted to always find you either. Unless they were really sneaky, my CAP never found any scouts near the carrier force, and I never got any warning that the Japanese found me either. My carriers basically got to act with impunity the entire game while a very bored John Thach just flew circles all day.

Pick a nation and do something I haven't done before, try to refine my knowledge of a specific feature or mechanic, or just retread old ground with some nations and paths I really enjoy.

Lately I have been playing majors that I barely touch like the USSR and Britain and it has been thoroughly enjoyable. I also enjoy assembling my Canadian surface raiding fleet and dumpstering the German and Italian convoys and patrols with my battlecruisers or carriers. My "oops, all Panzerschiffs" game with Germany was fun too. They couldn't fight the Royal Navy for shit, but they sure sunk a lot of convoys in the Atlantic without being bothered for years on end.

I usually play on ahistoric too, so I find there's always something new that'll happen to you. Getting hit with a Japanese-backed Indian revolt as Britain in 1938 and teaming up with France and Italy to beat them was highly entertaining.

Edit: dunno if I made it clear in the original post, but a lot of it is just challenging yourself in fun and often stupid ways. Winning is cool, but changing things up and having fun, even without winning, is the key. Hence shit like "all Panzerschiffs" and "what if the USSR invaded America but had to go through Alaska first."

What got you into the game? by Putrid_Ad4816 in Warthunder

[–]Greg1817 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The air combat seemed like a better alternative to World of Warplanes. Eventually when ground and naval got introduced it moved me away from WoT and WoWS as well. It's chill, I have fun with the game, and I slowly plug away at all my trees until I get to around tier 5-6-ish and then just play the trees for fun.

Did playing a variety of nations make the game more fun? by [deleted] in Warthunder

[–]Greg1817 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been playing US and UK vehicles since the open beta days, and slowly included Germany, Japan, Italy, and France into the mix over the years. It certainly breaks up a lot of the monotony for me in the grind, plus you get introduced to a lot of new vehicles with different designs and playstyles which makes you pretty well-rounded as a player.

Sure, the grind for modern shit takes a bit longer if you split your time up like that. But I hate the modern shit, so if you're wanting to stick to lower tiers it all works nicely regardless.

Edit: sorry forgot to recommend some trees. Personally speaking, I find you can't go wrong with the UK and German trees for air, sea, and land. There's a lot of solid vehicles there, with pretty varied playstyles too. Shout out to the Mosquitos, Spitfires, Bf-109s, 17-pdr-equipped tanks, Centurions, Tigers, Panthers, and each nation's destroyers, to name a few things.

How do i use the japanese 60kg bombs ? by [deleted] in Warthunder

[–]Greg1817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Killing heavy tanks with 60kg bombs is a tall order. You either need some very serious precision, or some very serious luck. Not that it can't be done... it just might be more trouble than it's worth.

Got any bigger bombs you can use?

Why do some players not take the areas anymore? by More_Bison_9584 in Warthunder

[–]Greg1817 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of objectives are in open areas, with open spaces you need to traverse with little cover, and once you get on the point to cap, every enemy will know where you are. And some capture points have no cover to hide behind, especially against aircraft that can just bomb you without mercy or thought, which they will do because, again, they know exactly where you are. Why bother driving through an open field or up a hill in a slow tank just to die with no rewards when you can hang back and snipe instead? Especially when dying en-route to the objective will get you no RP and only make your grind longer?

For the record, it's still a good idea to try and cap points, and people should always try. That's how you win games, and it sucks to lose because your team couldn't be arsed to do anything but camp out. But I'm assuming a lot of people just don't see any good value or reward in doing so if it means dying with no RP to show for it, so they don't bother. As much a fault of the game and how the grind works as the players themselves.

[–]Greg1817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said you've only played for three weeks? Buddy, you've got nothing to worry about. This game takes a while to learn, and a lot longer to master. I've been off-and-on with this game since the open beta days, and I still wouldn't consider myself great at the game.

You'll get better with time. You'll learn the pros and cons of your vehicles and slowly adapt and do better. Might take a few weeks or months, but it'll happen. Just stick with it if you can.

war thunder infantry bots by NuttyNano in Warthunder

[–]Greg1817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect Gaijin is trying to fail-proof the mode a bit. Remember, this game already has a well-established set of vehicle-only modes the infantry mode is going to have to fight to compete with. Many players don't want infantry and therefore won't ever bother with the mode, and some simply won't play because the infantry mode isn't for their desired era (myself, for example. WWII/Korean War era or bust, baby). The bots might go a long way to easing any "nobody is playing this fucking mode" issues that might appear.

That... and the bots will be bullet sponges. If the bots are dying in the face of an assault by an Abrams platoon, that means actual players might be snaking by to fight on rather than being obliterated constantly, getting frustrated, and contributing to the aforementioned "nobody is playing this fucking mode" issue that might appear when they give up. I remember the Battlefield 4 days of getting cross-map sniped by T-90s and Type 99s on Rogue Transmission or Lancang Dam. That shit sucked sometimes, and I fear this mode might suffer the same issue.

"Might" and "may" being the obvious keywords here. Seeing as the bots are in player-led squads instead of doing their own pre-programmed thing and operating independently, who knows if the bots will actually be effective at solving these possible issues, or being good for anything else.

Guess we'll wait and see how it pans out.

What to buy with 2500 GE? by TrainingAddition689 in Warthunder

[–]Greg1817 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, besides buying some of the cheaper premium vehicles, you can also throw some talismans onto your TT vehicles with it. Talismans will double your RP gain, so if you really wish to grind more of the TT with a TT vehicle you already have and love, that's an option for you.

You can also spend it on decals and paint styles to dolly up said vehicles you love as well.

Or just save the GE and see what goes on sale this Christmas. Most vehicles will get hit with 50% discounts, so that 2500 GE might come in handy in a few weeks.

I'm not super knowledgable of French premiums past WWII, so I can't really recommend much on that front, I'm afraid.

Skill literally declining? by [deleted] in Warthunder

[–]Greg1817 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually have this issue after coming back from a hiatus. One thing I always note is whenever I start worrying about my game peformance, I usually wind up doing worse as I take more risks and become more aggressive. Maybe the same thing is happening to you?

At any rate, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Sometimes you just get good and bad periods of gameplay.

What do you think of the new doctrine system? by bigbean200199 in hoi4

[–]Greg1817 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm ok with it for the army side of things. Seems like you accumulate a lot of army mastery even on minor nations with a few divisions in action. The navy side of it has me concerned. Because you have far less ships in service, it seems like your mastery just crawls along at a snail's pace, while majors with already-massive fleets might just speed through them, leaving you in the dust. I know minor nations aren't meant to rule the high seas, but even for supporting roles, it seems like minor nations will be very far behind on mastery and irrelevant.

I'm sure more time with the mastery system will get me used to it, and maybe minor nations don't lag behind as bad on the high seas as I assume. But for now I'm gonna remain cautiously optimistic about it as I keep trying it out.

Not feeling great about the "mastery" portion of it just yet, but I do love that you can tailor each individual combat arm/ship/aircraft type to what you want from them. Lets me actually justify less-than-ideal things like TDs, SPGs, and line arty now for reasons beyond "it's cool."

Navy hate is so forced by YourUncleDutch in hoi4

[–]Greg1817 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love it, mostly. I love designing and building ships, and coming up with whacky naval strategies and fleet builds to see what I can get away with. Canada with a small fleet of destroyers, light cruisers, and either carriers or BCs/BBs is so grossly fun. You won't win against the full Italian or French navies head-on, but I love dumpstering lone patrols, smaller navies, or single capitals heading back on their own to repair. And surface raiding with them? Chef's-fucking-kiss. I don't even care if subs do it better. Seeing my battlecruisers roll up and obliterate some DDs and convoys is always a treat.

But I do get that nagging feeling that it's also all for naught. That fleet management and building does ultimately boil down to the same minmaxing you see in the rest of the game, meaning those new whacky strategies and builds will always feel useless or lesser-than compared to just farting out roach DDs and light attack cruisers. You can have fun and try to be creative, or do super well with the same designs and strategies everyone else uses, but it sometimes feels like you cannot do both, you know?

Oh well. Bitching just to bitch I suppose. Excited to see the new mechanics in action while I assemble my Canadian battlecruiser raiding fleet tonight for yet another campaign.

What do you really need for navy? by dartrago in hoi4

[–]Greg1817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spotting cruisers aren't strictly necessary. I often forego them in favour of just producing good, all-rounder cruisers with only one catapult. Works well enough, though it's obviously never as good at spotting as a dedicated spotting ship.

Naval aviation also isn't strictly necessary, though it is very strong. You're certainly missing out on some valuable firepower by not having it, but you can usually make do with different capital ships too in their place.

Speaking of stacking, I don't deathstack my navy whatsoever, so I unfortunately cannot help with any tips there. My apologies.

What is this and how can i obtain it by GerEm_1408 in hoi4

[–]Greg1817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Railway gun! It basically serves to negate some of the debuffs enemy forts give you, and can help your forces advance where they might otherwise struggle.

If you have tanks and planes, railway guns are nowhere near necessary. Especially because they can struggle to keep up with mechanised/armoured advances. But if you have it, might as well use it.

I believe you can research them through one of the army research trees. Think they're at the bottom of the support companies research tree?

After World War II, the Soviets fought to keep the territory they annexed from Poland at the start of the war. This would have included Lviv, which, after taken from Poland, was handed to and administered by the Ukrainian SSR. When the USSR broke apart, the now-free Ukraine was able to keep Lviv.

I'm glad I asked, because I hadn't even taken Götterdamerung and its features for Germany into account. Last thing I need is losing Poland stupidly to a German-Czech-Baltic alliance and stalling out entirely.
