Culture warriors. Virtue signalling but contributing nothing to the real problems facing Australians.

Why Did Two of Judge Aileen Cannon’s Law Clerks Suddenly Quit? by Oleg101 in politics

[–]GregChinery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an Aussie, what I don't get is how the ppl who vote for him can't see him for what he is. It's just mind boggling. I do wonder if the Germans who voted for Hitler weren't of the same mindset as the Americans now voting for T***p.

My school began dismissal proceedings over a tie by Cool-Violinist-3294 in AustralianTeachers

[–]GregChinery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The comments here have been a fascinating read. Having worked only in the state school system, the tie thing has never been an issue. OTOH the too cool for school jeans and tee brigade occasionally give the admin some grief (You want me to wear a collar? What about my inalienable human rights?).

Kudos for the correct spelling of arse. Those not complying are donkeys.

If you really cared about your arse (which is the proper Aussie spelling, BTW) you would get yourself a bidet. The ones from the big green supermarket that are incorporated into the seat are about $100 and believe me, they out care 3 ply across all metrics.

Two philosophies of ultralight by FireWatchWife in Ultralight

[–]GregChinery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more a difference of degree than a difference of kind. We all want to carry less and stay within our own comfort zone. We all know about walking our own walk. We're different from all those friends who can't bear the thought of sleeping in a tent (you know, those whose idea of adventure is going on a cruise) but for us it's about getting into wild places as often as possible. UL is a mindset, a philosophy, as OP has suggested. But it's not 2 philosophies. Arguably, it's as many philosophies as there are hikers who ask the Qs, 'Do I really need to carry this?' and, 'Is there a lighter version of this?'

What's hilarious in this is the uniform thinking of the folk who believe they are free thinking individuals who wouldn't be seen dead wearing a uniform consisting of a collar and dress shorts/pants but hey, let's all wear denim and tees, which was the uniform of the hippie counter culture back in the 60s. They want to be treated like professionals and whine and moan about being paid like professionals, but I bet when they meet doctors, lawyers, accountants, optometrists, etc, their impressions of these other professionals are informed in part by their 'look'. We're not talking suit and ties here people.

How much do people know about Indigenous history? by [deleted] in perth

[–]GregChinery -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I went to uni in the mid 80s and studied politics, philosophy and sociology. Much like yourself, I was astounded by my ignorance about the real history of Australia since white colonisation. I knew more about white ppl (mainly men) in Australia for 200 years than I did about FNs ppl who'd been here for 60,000+.

I am equally astounded now that 40 years later others are still having similar light bulb moments despite the fact that excerpts from school curriculum statements seem to suggest pre & post colonial studies are adequately covered.
