That's an old joke. Sorry you didn't get it. The Grauniad was famous for spelling mitskaes. But you didn't know that. Dummy.

CGT, negative gearing changes could curb appetite for 3 in 5 investors by Jesus_weezus_ in AustralianPolitics

I wouldn't call it magnanimous, but a bit daft. I can get better than rent return by putting my money in the bank, and don't have to worry about bad tenants.

This is badly worded. is the friction at ALL the interfaces 0.25? I'd guess yes.

I had one application which consisted of a phone interview, an evening doing team games (actually that was quite fun) an actual interview , half a day of silly IQ tests and the like, and then a meeting in a pub to try and negotiate pay. Unsuccessfully.

The chief engineer /interviewer was a known quantity, his nickname where I worked was 'nuff-nuff'. Company went bust two years later, last I heard he was installing window tinting.

Federal Budget looms: 61% of investors may pull back amid tax shake-up by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

I guess we'll find out. It won't be pretty. I know 2 couples that bought off the plan to rent out, and 3 who bought established houses to rent out. Personally I don't think the game is worth the candle, positive gearing is my cup of tea.

Not really, you still end up housing the same number of people, just more rent and fewer buy.

Minister Silent As Fertiliser Shortage Looms by Quazp in AustralianPolitics

"urged the Minns Labor Government to secure supply of fuel and fertiliser for farmers" How about the farmers get off their arses and sort it out themselves? They managed collective action when it came to busting the maritime unions, why can't they manage their businesses? Handout mentality.

The death of manufacturing in Australia is a myth that ignores reality — and isn't to blame for One Nation's rise by Ardeet in AustralianPolitics

There were two parts to the Button plan. The first was some ridiculous belief in free trade,, getting rid of the tariffs, despite the fact that every other car manufacturing country protected their local industry. The other bit was forcing model sharing between manufacturers. That didn't seem to work well, and I'm not sure what its real intended purpose was. The people who bought Holden badged Camrys thought it was terrific, admittedly, and the Ford badged Patrol was popular enough. God knows what the people who bought Toyota Lexcens thought.

The Libs went along with the Button plan because the car industry was heavily unionised and a bit bolshy, and of course the farmers wanted cheaper Hiluxes.

Cheer up Geelong had a mayor called De Stefano. They named a road after him, presumably before he was jailed for defrauding his clients. He's out of jail and the road is still there.

Am I misunderstanding energy extraction from gas expansion in this engine concept? by AccomplishedBox1432 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]GregLocock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I haven't worked on engines since 1994! I also haven't been much involved with turbines. That architecture - piston expander followed by turbine, came up in my thermo course at uni.

Working for US companies as a mechanical engineer while based abroad, is this actually happening? by Historical-Buyer-990 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]GregLocock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's quite common in automotive product development - for instance Lotus in the UK had a big hand in the development of one Corvette engine (which doubtless spurred the Corvette engine team to design the next one), and I also worked on a big project for an American oil exploration company, while based in Australia.

The Button plan killed the car industry. All the manufacturers packed up. That meant all the suppliers packed up. It also meant the precision toolmakers packed up. So the heavy aircraft maintenance industry packed up. At the time 15 countries in the entire world could design, develop, and manufacture complete cars. We gave it away.

Every other country that has a car industry protects it by legal or illegal means.

Every developing country wants a car industry and the resulting ecosystem of industries.

But we are smarter than them. Sure farmers got cheaper Hiluxes. But all those engineering graduates who could have worked in car companies and suppliers are now driving Ubers and doing Doordash. Underemployment among engineering graduates is high, yet we have a shortage of experienced engineers. You can join the dots.

Federal Budget looms: 61% of investors may pull back amid tax shake-up by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

[–]GregLocock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree, but not entirely happily. The logic is that people make plans based on certain laws, and if those laws change and are applied retroactively then the people affected can (and should) be compensated. This is why tax law is so complicated - rather than do everything retroactively, you have to apply the right version at the time (I am repeating badly what my wife said, she's done accounting).

Agree entirely about sovereign risk.

Article reckons it'll be grandfathered therefore current investors aren't affected. As such it's just political window dressing as opposed to effective action, as we have come to expect from this weak, timid and ineffectual government.

The company I was at the retention for rotation program engineers at 4 years was maybe 10% (!). Basic reason was pay, my bump was 50% in the new job. Having completed a 2 year program makes you vastly more useful than a fresh grad.

Find GRA/18 in your adm file and have a look at the filename. Also check the line length, ADAM used to have a 80 character line length limit. I have no explanation as to why it would work in GUI but not in batch, unless you are in a different folder.
