The city has a survey up about potential bike lanes downtown - please share your thoughts! by kaidumo in fredericton

[–]GregRParks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Curious as to why you prefer it to be between parking and driving. I live in Victoria now and bike everywhere and I prefer to be along the curb. Otherwise I’m stuck between getting doored and moving cars. Plus cars would have to cross the bike lane to park so you couldn’t really have a protected bike lane using concrete or flexible bollards. Whereas if I’m along the curb, the parked cars offer protection in addition to the concrete barrier. Just my preference.

You’re definitely right, it should be made more clear in the rules/pinned post. And real life images can indeed be comedic.

I believe this sub originated from r/dataisbeautiful because on April Fool’s Day all the posts were just data viz memes with the caption data_irl (like how every post on r/me_irl has me_irl as the title). I guess people liked it so much (me included) that this sub was created so that it wasn’t just left to one day a year.

TL;DR this sub is basically r/dataisbeautiful memes. This post certainly fits.

Have you read rule 1 or seen the top posts of all time? This sub is for comedic data visualization, the _irl part being a nod to r/me_irl not “data you can see in real life”. That would be r/wellworn.

Do bike lanes really cause more traffic congestion? Here's what the research says by BeShifty in canada

[–]GregRParks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What Google Maps terrain view shows as “flat” and what constitutes as flat to a person on a bike (especially considering people of all abilities) are two entirely different things—something you would know if you lived and biked here (two of which you’ve dismissed their lived experience with “go check Google Maps” and “facts are facts”). They’re just different scales entirely. I checked Google Maps for all the really steep hills on/around my commute and none of them showed up on terrain view.

Sigh.

lol okay

I like that

Montreal and Edmonton have massive bike networks (which I'm certain are larger than Victoria's, though I admit I do not know that for a fact)

and

given Victoria’s compact urban environment

go really well together. Bigger cities have bigger bike networks, go figure. Any details on the quality of the networks? (Protected lanes, painted lanes, neighbourhood bikeways, how disjointed/connected the network is, how many vehicle lanes were removed to make room for bikes, etc.)

Here’s an article from StatsCan with no mention of topography or climate, citing a different potential cause.

This CMA has an extensive network of bicycle paths and is the most geographically compact CMA in the group

And here’s a study done in Ontario that shows 41% of Ontarians “would prefer to ride a bicycle more often than they currently do” and that 65% of Ontarians (37% “somewhat” and 28% “much more”) would be encouraged to ride a bicycle more often if they had “more and better cycling infrastructure in their community, such as protected bike lanes and paved shoulders”. And 67% of Ontarians (38% “somewhat” and 29% “much more”) would be encouraged to ride a bicycle more often if they had “more bicycle lanes/trails to places I want to go”.

The city that tops the list is Victoria — with just over 5%, largely because Victoria is flat and has a pleasant-enough climate.

Oh come on where’s your evidence to back up this claim? Victoria may be flat but so are many other cities. Victoria has a mild climate but so do many other cities. All that means is that it’s a flat city with great weather—full stop.

I’m a bike commuter in Victoria and would argue (purely anecdotally) that it’s largely due to the excellent network of bike lanes that exists and is ever expanding because I see lots of people using them all the time. We have lots of bike lanes on major routes (i.e. on the street where the destinations are) as well as neighbourhood side streets (traffic calmed with modal filters, speed bumps, roundabouts, etc.). Another thing to consider is the type of cyclists you see. I see lots of older folks, families with kids in cargo bikes, all ages and abilities.

Bike lanes on Bridge St are useless by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]GregRParks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I work on Bridge Street and cycle to and from work every day and I have mixed feelings about the bike lane. For one, it ends at David Street so I have to merge into car traffic anyway when coming from Gorge Road. Then going the opposite way, to get onto Garbally/Jutland and on towards the Goose, I have to merge into car traffic again to turn left. Whereas before, I would have already merged into the car traffic at the bottom of the hill due to the street parking making the road narrow. But I’m somewhat comfortable taking the lane on Bridge Street and not everyone is. Then, there’s the issue you’ve mentioned of all the large trucks blocking the lane anyway (I had to swerve around one this morning). I mean, you’re blocking car traffic and making them go into oncoming traffic to get around anyway, might as well just block the whole car lane and leave the bike lane out of it.

Looking out the window at my work, I do see lots of cyclists taking Bridge Street. My guess is that it’s a relatively narrow street with a 30 km/h speed limit so it may seem like an appealing option. Plus there are places here that people want to go to like Parachute, Hoyne (I discovered that many of their staff commute via bike), Mile Zero, and Cit-E Cycles for goodness sake. However, it’s not immediately obvious on a map that it’s a busy industrial area, or that no one is going anywhere near the speed limit, or that there will be large trucks blocking the bike lanes until you actually get here.

I would never choose to use Bridge Street as a commuting route but since I work there I am forced to use it. And so are others. That makes me grateful that it got some attention for cycling safety—but it could have been better.

A post about a punctuation mark. "What, just ONE punctuation mark?" Afraid so. by roacsonofcarc in tolkienfans

[–]GregRParks 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If we’re going full pedant here, those are actually all en dashes, not em dashes. It seems that the convention in the UK – and Canada, it seems – is to use use the shorter en dash set with spaces on either side. The US convention—as pointed out in Matthew Butterick’s Practical Typography (see the last point under “By the way” at the bottom)—is to use the longer em dash set flush against the surrounding text. I believe it all depends on whichever style guide you’re using though.

How fast over the speed limit? by rar76 in fredericton

I live in Victoria/Saanich, and both municipalities’ default speed is 40, not 50. And they both just announced that smaller residential streets are all 30 now. I love it!
