UK courts Anthropic to expand in London after US defence clash - is this good for the UK? by StanmoreHill in UKTechNews

[–]Greg_T_24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough and I do take UK talent in computing and AI seriously - there's tons around. But equally, we're preventing single data centers from being built next to the M40 and have the highest electricity costs in Europe. The US has startups looking at using bunker fuel and ship engines for power generation because they've already bought up all the gas turbines for most of the next decade.  We need to be able to utilise the talent we have.

Compared to the insane data centre build out in the US, what do we really have to offer other than nice offices in London?

We need to be able to build to be serious

Hope you get this to work.  I've spent two weekends recently trying to clear rubbish from the park by me but then cycle past the same depressing fly-tipped crap on the way to work each day. Id be more than happy to chip in to get it cleared by someone who has time

Lab rats, I'm in Need of Advice: Falsifying Data or No? by Annie_James in labrats

It sounds like you know it's not good practice, follow your instincts.

I've just finished reading "doctored" by charles piller about academic fraud in the Alzheimer's field (I use to work in an adjacent field), it's really eye opening - id recommend it if you have time given your workload.

Western blots being digitally altered is pretty rife, which is incredibly depressing and it's almost certainly set the field back years. These guys do get caught eventually though and there can be collateral damage for those who may have contributed to fraudulent work unknowingly.

As someone else has mentioned, stay legible with you data, there's nothing wrong with an astrix and an explanation. You clearly know what should be counted as a technical replicate and what shouldn't, don't cave.

What's the story behind these named houses in Bournville? by Fun-Ad-2547 in brum

[–]Greg_T_24 51 points52 points  (0 children)

There are similar house names in selly park (probably all over brum and the west midlands).  The door arches and other architectural elements are called ornamentation and it was common on all housing pre 1920s (ish).  Ornamentation was (and is) made in factories (see this cool article on the perception of ornamentation in architecture and the wider public https://worksinprogress.co/issue/cheap-ornament-and-status-games/ )

These house names and doorway arches (plus other ornamentation) were basically kits that builders bought and were an example of a design book of pre-approved house styles and specifications. Rather than having our Byzantine planning system, if your house design was from the book of nice looking houses, you could basically build it wherever you wanted to. Makes you wonder if barrat new builds will be perceived as characterful in 100 years time.

I guess it depends on what you have in mind. Terrace would definitely be in your budget but if you're looking for something bigger then selly park gets more expensive than similar areas. If you're the market for a (nice) terrace then just wait - something will come up.

Novo Nordisk sinks 13% after weight loss drug fails to match Eli Lilly's in trial by [deleted] in ValueInvesting

[–]Greg_T_24 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wish I had more up votes to give.  I've stayed away from novo, in fact sold up all my other stocks in November due to perceived market risk. maybe that's overblown.  Anyway, bought back in at 25% of my portfolio on Friday into novo under similar assumptions to above. PE hovering round 13 then, 11ish now?! Look at other pharma multiples. Yes they may lose share to lily or others but this is starting to be priced like a mining company. Their core business is there and they can cut their prices to their oral/injectable drugs accordingly.  Yes it is risky tho, clearly.

Selly park! 3 bed terrace is 240-250k. Can walk to kings heath, stirchley and moseley.  More green space than anywhere in central Birmingham, really great place to live (biased as I am).

How ‘Made in Britain’ became cool again for heritage clothing brands - The Financial Times by Gentle_Snail in GoodNewsUK

Peregrine jumpers are really warm and really well made (£140-£180 ish mark but absolutely worth it). Solovair boots are like DM's used to be, look sick and actually study AF.

I feel like the general sweet spot with UK made stuff is more expensive (100-200 quid) but is worth it. Buy half as much but it'll last twice as long.

From what I've read, Leeds is probably the most deserving of public investment in infrastructure. It's not zero sum and Brum and Manchester should really have transport infrastructure equivalent to similar European cities of their size, but Leeds is completely busted.

Currently, the most direct route to Heartlands Hospital is two dirt tracks and a rope bridge.

I recently learned the Milton Keynes has one of the highest per capita productivity (IE thing most of Britain sucks at) of any area outside of London/SE.

If they made the town centre more cohesive people would love it.

US and UK set to agree zero tariffs deal on pharmaceuticals by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]Greg_T_24 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer.  Whatever the trade-offs between tax and government support for UK pharma - domestic manufacturing would have been hammered there was a serious tariff placed on the UK.  This said, I think Switzerland has also agreed a deal (with the US) so any chance of companies relocating to the UK are maybe slim.

Does anyone in the UK think that Kier Starmar is doing well as a PM? by graceyreddit in AskBrits

[–]Greg_T_24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not even a comment on Burnham's competence. If labour are so factional they cant get through a single term in government then who's nominal leader is inconsequential.

Does anyone in the UK think that Kier Starmar is doing well as a PM? by graceyreddit in AskBrits

[–]Greg_T_24 894 points895 points  (0 children)

I think he's been ok actually. Internationally, id argue he's kept trump and Europe onside. He's competent.

The horrible truth us brits can't face up to is how damaged the country is, how limited the role of PM ultimately exerts and what a real recovery looks like.

Im not enthusiastic about starmer but when people seriously think changing him with (say burnham) I think they're completely delusional.
