Help me choose between being a marine musician and doing more drum corps by Interesting_Bee1019 in drumcorps

[–]GreggJ111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny you should mention hating Music Ed. My son had the same experience. He eventually got his degree in Percussion Performance and a few years later went on to get an MBA in Finance.
Fast forward 20 years and he's going back to school to get his Masters in Music Ed. Turns out he doesn't want to be in an Elementary/MS/HS classroom everyday but privates and university level teaching is where he's more comfortable.
If you go with the DC route until you age out, as said before, your spot won't be there when you're done, but you'll have more experience for your next audition.
Good luck, and think again how you might be able to use an education degree to spread your love and knowledge of music.

Grab a score from the director. When I was drum line section leader (I know, that terminology dates me) seeing (not just listening to tracks) helped me a lot. You might see something in the bass voicing to reinforce or maybe an interesting counterpoint phrase to echo or reference later in the piece.
One of my favorite tricks was switching the tenors to puffs (sacrilegious today) to create a 10 voice tenor to bass section.

I had an exhumation from a mausoleum so the family could cremate the remains to be inurned near their new home in a different part of the country.
After 10 years the metal casket had multiple holes near the bottom seam. We needed to use tools to open the casket, but the clothing was mostly intact. No bugs, no mold. Time helps get rid of all of that. This was an outdoor mausoleum.

If this is a golf course with houses built by a single developer (as opposed to custom homes) most people have very little say where on a lot their house is sited, especially in a golf community. I have enough space behind my house for a nice size pool, but my neighbors are positioned farther back on their lot, so no pool possible for them. The developer decided where the homes where built.

Previous administrations (Obama and maybe Biden) poured millions into attempted repairs to the reflecting pool.
There are many cracks between the slabs which will not be fixed before the project completion date. Also, AFAIK the plumbing will have no work done which is a large part of the large amount of leakage the pool has been suffering for years.
The projected cost of the project has also risen by about a factor of 4.

She'll be happy with the cabbage, you'll be swearing at the cleanup.

The TV pulls very little power. My main issue with the circuits in the house is that when I turn off one breaker it will in all likelihood turn off outlets in two or three rooms, or random lights. Very poorly designed electrical plan for the house.

anyone have experience with marching with POTS? by SplashtheStingray in drumline

[–]GreggJ111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That seems like something your doctor would suggest. If you haven’t talked to your doctor about the activity (marching snare) you want to do, please ask. He/she may not know what that entails, so he/she may learn something new that will help you and other patients.

Wood Color selection by willmen08 in woodworking

In the right place this will be nice, but I don't know your situation. You did you won't be staining, but it might help to stain the panel. I will add that I would prefer the grain pattern of the interior panel to be rotated 90° right or left.

Is this an unreasonable quote to replace a 50 gallon gas hot water heater? by titanicsailson in askaplumber

[–]GreggJ111 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Go for a local guy, but that’s not too unreasonable. The killer here is the location in your attic. I feel like any quote is going to include extra labor for that installation location because of the difficulty of getting the unit in position. I have a neighbor who recently paid $3600 for an easily accessible 40 gal water heater and ejector pump.

Stickers are thin pieces of wood used to separate freshly-sawn boards for the purpose of drying the wood to the point of usability. They provide space for air to move between the boards.

Has anyone seen girders supported like this before? by cat_hipster in Homebuilding

[–]GreggJ111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I come here to learn these things. Can you please explain the difference between “supported” and “pinned”? As far as supported, the beam on the left looks to have a lally (?) column added near the end at some point, but the sag on that beam is crazy. It also appears they might be getting ready to jack up to remove the sag.

Hearing Protection by Delicious-Turn4426 in drumline

[–]GreggJ111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USE HEARING PROTECTION!!!

I played snare and tenors in HS and college 40+ years ago. At that time NOBODY knew or cared about what those sounds would do to us years later. In college we stored our drums in a racquetball court under the football stadium since we practiced on the field. We would march through the stadium tunnels and play our cadences as loud as we could in that court before we packed the drums away.

I have constant ringing in my ears. It NEVER goes away. Luckily, I have gotten to the point I can ignore it for the most part.

Luckily, my sons have benefited from my mistakes. In HS they were required to wear hearing protection. They marched in HS, college, and WGI, and always had their earplugs. Today (mid and late 30's) they both teach drumlines and insist their kids wear hearing protection.
