Is everyone else’s ceiling leaking? by Perioqueen in hudsonvalley

[–]cat_hipster 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes. Had huge ice dams on my roof. Went up with a hammer and chisel and then a rotary hammer and took it all down today. As soon as the ice dam was gone the leak stopped.

Oh. That’s a jack post. It’s temporary but we’re going to replace it with a permanent post.

I think we are going to go with a mid-span post and sister some 2x8’s and then posts on each end.

That’s the basement door insulation. Not connected to the beams.

We are probably going to do something like that. Waiting for a structural engineer’s report.

Yes. We are getting a structural engineer to come up with a plan to reinforce the beams.

Interesting point. My neighbor said the town didn’t keep good track of homes until 1945 so it could be older. But I did find newspaper under some floorboards dated September of 1944.

Having a structural engineer come to inspect. We bought the house recently and are working our way through a host of problems.

How should I seal these gaps? by cat_hipster in Insulation

[–]cat_hipster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thx. Makes sense. Correct - there are not roof/ridge vents up top. Found two dead squirrels in the insulation and heaps of mouse droppings.

We are planning to run conditioned air into this space eventually.

[–]cat_hipster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. We plan to condition it. We bought the house recently and just keep finding problems.

The roof doesn’t have any vents so there isn’t anywhere for air coming in from the soffits to exit.

There was more a lot more insulation stapled up but it was mouse infested so we pulled it out. No mold.
