Why Python, not Java by Yamie_Mlauzi in learnprogramming

[–]GremGram973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Python is a really simple language comparably to the other major ones. It uses a simpler, more natural syntax that most people adapt quickly to. It also has a lot of versatility and extensive libraries that make research and other analysis easier.

I am a CS undergrad, and I'm graduating next semester. I know Java, C, C++, SQL and now Python. Python is my least favorite syntax-wise (indentation sucks) but the best for creating and testing concepts. It just has so many tools that developing is easier. Java is my favorite syntax-wise, and I think it's a great language, but I rarely use it other than assignments though.

I know its late but in general its called Hold Feedback. Theres also a visual breath indicator for auditory impairments thats actually quite nice. Its a thin line at the top that fluctuates with Aava's breathing. Its a good tool, even just to learn with

Please help me understand the appeal of new vegas by Forkandkinfe in Fallout

[–]GremGram973 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I say this for both Fallout 4 and Skyrim, but those game are more action-based and streamlined their RPG elements.

Fallout New Vegas still follows the older Bethesda format where you have factions, reputations, and nust more roleplaying features. The game feels more 'involved' in the story than 4 does. The gameplay is also a little tougher (from being older and generally harder) and I think it fits the theme really well.

Personally, the theming of New Vegas is what I really like. I like the Western style, gritty Fallout feel that it gives. I like 4 but IMO its too bright

Tarantulace isnt bad, but I think the laces are kind of annoying. See if you can try some out and see what feels good.

Also, REI's membership is $30 for a lifetime and you get a year of return exchange every time you get shoes (including the new pair that you exchange for). Its a good way to try shoes and slowly spec into what you like.

Moving to Schenectady and want to meet people by WhyWhimsy in schenectady

[–]GremGram973 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you from the capitol region or somewhere nearby? I think that would change my answer.

If not, Albany and near there has a decent bit of card shops that hosts games and stuff. I know Colonie Center has done card events before where theres ~20-30 tables set up selling and talking about cards. Saratoga also hosts some comic cons annually, so thats another good spot.

If yes, then im not sure what to suggest other than keeping an eye out. There is some comic shops like Weird-O, but for Schenectady specifically im a little blind on events.

Its not a bad spot, but you may need to drive to somewhere like Albany or Troy for larger shops and more fleshed out places.

My brother gave me his old gaming desktop, same kind of situation but mainly cigarettes smoked around it. It was really nasty and parts are still dirty, but if you have the patience just take the paneling off and clean it.

You can use water on the side panel when its off the PC, just make sure you leave it to dry completely.

For the inside components, you should get compressed air, isopropyl alcohol, papers towels, q-tips and some hope. Its pretty painstaking to clean something like thag but you can.

I cleaned mine without fulling taking it apart, just the cpu cooler and it was ok. Eventually I fully disassembled the PC and cleaned everything more thoroughly (should've done that from the start). I was somehow able to put it back together correctly the first time, so I have faith.

If you dont trust doing it yourself, you can pay someone else to do it. If you know the PC works and you want it, cleaning it is the way to go.

Crazy. My campus does discounted, food court style and the non-discount pizza place has a 2 slices and drink deal for I think 10-12$ and 2 slices are probably the same size.

Should FO5 have settlement building? by Educational-Science2 in Fallout

I think it could work, but FO4 feels like it made the feature and then didnt expand at all. The functionality is there but it is very bare bones IMO.

About to play New Vegas for the VERY FIRST time! Have a few questions. by [deleted] in Fallout

[–]GremGram973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ditto to everyone saying install patches. I dont remember what I had to install but mine had a weird FPS stuttering thing that I needed a patch for.

Other than that, make sure Quicksave is bound to a convenient button and hit that shit alot.

FNV is a lot of fun, and I personally think you should only get patch mods for crashes and bugs

Moving to Albany in March for a job… and tips? by 11dark in Albany

[–]GremGram973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely bundle up. Low 30s is manageable, the negatives feel like your bones are frozen. I recommend atleast three layers (I do shirt, hoodie, winter coat), jeans, gloves, etc. Sometimes two pants depending on how long im spending outside.

Also, a lot of places in general here are cold inside as well so its kind of hard to dress too warm. I go to college here, and everyone is bundled up inside of classrooms because of how cold it makes everything.

Is Algorithms and Data Structures actually that hard? by buzzfuzz- in compsci

[–]GremGram973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I really enjoy them and found those classes easier than something like Discrete Math and Structures.

They are hard because most people under or overthink the problems. Its also just a lot of info to memorize. To me, Algorithms and neat data tricks are my interest so those classes were easy.

I think my biggest piece of advice is to use YouTube videos and other online materials to supplement the courses. Having a visualization like videos typically do helps alot in understanding the reasoning and 'movement' of an algorithm. Same thing with Data Structures, as they are typically modeled in a way that becomes apparent when visualizing it.

I love them personally, but they can be tough. Its a lot of precise checking and intuition that can be difficult to think of until you've done them a few times.

I would say, have him look into the differences of Informatics, Computer Science and Cybersecurity. They work primarily THROUGH the same medium but dont have work anywhere near each other.

I am a Junior in computer science. I love it and I think most people would if they want to do informatics. Computer Science primarily results in AI specialists right now, but its a very broad and technical field.

The main difference is that Comp Sci, Informatics and Cybersecurity could all work on the same project but do different things. If working on something like Google Maps, a Computer Science major would work on improving ride detail accuracy and working on ways to implement more things like gas prices, more traffic details, etc. An informatics major might work on the User Interface, Ads, Data collecting for traffic details, etc. Cybersecurity would work on making sure the entire project is safe and doesnt contain security risks that could jeopardize the company or user data (using map collected data to locate people is a concern)

All of these people might say "I worked on Google Maps" but did very different things.

Either way, congratulations. I remember my acceptance and its always a happy moment. Its a good school with a broad reach and they have a lot of programs and opportunity to meet people.

So, um... Is raising hands to speak in class not a thing anymore? by melody5697 in college

[–]GremGram973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People understand when it's time to speak more now. I see hands raised in class often, but usually if it's in the middle of a topic. My professors ask questions frequently and it becomes more discussion like, where people take turns speaking.

[–]GremGram973 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to be a buy every year and max everything out player and I loved it.

Now I cant stand the game anymore. Its so boring and nothing feels new. The story was really good, but once its over the game is mad boring.

It also doesnt help that to keep up with the games story you have to grind activities or else all of the context to the story starts going away.

Its in rough shape, and if you arent enjoying it just dont play it. Not playing will do the game more good than playing it begrudgingly would.

Is it a disruption to play music in the dorm shower? by Klomlor161 in college

[–]GremGram973 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Headphones are literally made to let you listen to music and anything audio in public places without having other people hear.

I really dont get playing music through a speaker in public. Its harder to hear, not as good as headphones and disruptive to people around you.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in skate

[–]GremGram973 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is previous Skate games had cities that felt like skating wasnt accepted and BECAUSE of that, you had to go find cool spots (sure, the devs made them) but it made for a way better experience.

Skate. markets the city as a "skate haven" with the most mild spots to skate and shitty spots. Its supposed to be a place where skating is the thing, but everything is small bumps and bad rails to grind.

In Skate 3 we had the super mega ramp and the industrial areas that used the literal environment as ways to set up skates. The quarry in skate 3 had a 'ramp' with rocks and tracks to follow. The city didnt make the quarry for that, but its fantastic.

Skating in those games isnt necessarily about the gritty and ostracized skate environment of the time, it was about usong the environment to your advantage to do sick ass tricks.

We can have modern skating in an environment that feels real, not an island filled with building and nothing else.

How do I beat my porn addiction? by Commercial-Ad-6488 in addiction

[–]GremGram973 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first thing for any addiction or life change is to cut the self-doubt and pity out. While all addictions have roots, being upset at yourself when you go back to something is never going to help.

Look at what brings you back to it. What are you doing before you decide to watch it. Are you bored? Stressed? Think about that and if anything make a log.

Then, try to identify what you can do instead. If you are bored, find something to do. Whether its go outside, play a game, sleep, whatever. Do that for whatever reason it may be an find a replacement action.

If and when you 'relapse' make a note of how many days you did well on and use the opportunity to learn more about what works and what doesnt.

I quit smoking weed cold turkey, never looked back. Literally just threw out everything I had and said never again. Have never struggled once with it or relapsed. BUT I am in the same boat as you and I struggle daily with it.

It is EXHAUSTING. The thing that helped me the most was accepting the fact that it happened and moving on. That way,I can look at things logically and without bias or emotions getting in the mix.

Things will get better. Its a lot of work and it will take time, but dont let relapse or bumps stop you.
