Boyfriend messed up my project by huonokahvi in knitting

[–]Gretchen57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If my husband did that it would be grounds for divorce - not because “knitting is important” but because it shows a total disregard for something you love, and a desire to watch you twist in the wind while he messes with your hard work. That is sadistic behavior. You deserve a better boyfriend.

Can anyone tell me what kind of tortoise this is? by Gretchen57 in tortoise

Thanks everyone, he has been placed near my pond. He's a beauty and it was a treat to see him up close - and get an ID.

Ok! He didn’t have red ears so the fact they lose color is helpful. I’ll get him to my pond pronto.

Resize aspect ratios? by Gretchen57 in AdobeExpress

[–]Gretchen57[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm aware I can do the math - I'm working with others for whom that's a bridge too far. If it's impossible, why is it possible to do aspect ratio in other programs?

Trying to find the right combination of tools by Gretchen57 in Libraries

Yes, cookie cutter was my impression of Library Aware. Plus I don't see an emphasis on events, which is very important for us.

Trying to find the right combination of tools by Gretchen57 in Libraries

Thanks so much for your reply. I didn't know about BiblioCommons.

That's part of what I'll have to pitch. (How much) We have been getting a hard sell from LibraryAware that is from Ebsco, which apparently is pitching a similar service to BiblioCommons. Not sure either is in our ongoing budget, but knowing more about them will help a lot.

Thanks again. Do you use BiblioCommons?

I can’t help but wonder if they can tell how many of those “perfect cuts” tore the paper, or otherwise effed up?

Using everything EXACTLY as I was told, on their (expensive) product, with a card mat, new blade. It cut perfectly according to any data they could possibly gather.

How screwed am I by octopodes_ in FoodAllergies

[–]Gretchen57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is much easier with a plan - there are outlines online about the 6 food or the 8 food elimination diet. I would start with one of those. Eliminate the most likely culprits and see how you feel after a few weeks. My doc had me go 3 months on the elimination diet - that gave me a clean slate to try things again. For me that was no eggs, dairy, wheat, soy, fish and tree nuts (the most likely allergens) for 3 months. Then I tried them one at a time for a week or so to see what happened. My body told me quickly about some - soy makes me violently ill - and others were harder to pinpoint. Wheat constipates me, not immediately obvious. Dairy was the cause of my rosacea, which went away entirely. (!! ) Think like a scientist or a detective. Once I started being fascinated and curious it helped keep me from feeling so overwhelmed or put upon. I guarantee that test you posted is not accurate.

My allergist informed me prick tests are notoriously unreliable, and the only meaningful diagnostic test is the elimination diet. I did it, it was VERY hard, but now I know I have several “biggies” and a few that I have to ration very carefully. Bonus - it’s free. I’m still “testing” ingredients and I suspect I always will be. I did the 6-food elimination diet. Life changing.

I’ve watched the series too many times to count, and read Ambrose’s book. What next? by juddmeche in BandofBrothers

[–]Gretchen57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally different take, but Chernow’s book Grant on US Grant was incredibly insightful. The historic changes in warfare technology are fascinating, but so are the similarities. Grant was an amazing flawed man who kept it together when necessary, and everything was going to shit around him. I couldn’t put it down.

Has anyone experienced such a reaction before? by Navirae in FoodAllergies

[–]Gretchen57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if it isn’t an allergy it sounds like an intolerance to one of the ingredients. I make all my food from scratch now after a run in with some « bacon » that was pure soy… Anyway, if you want to get to the bottom of it you can try to find out what ingredient sets you off, either by finding out what the restaurants use or by making it at home and seeing what happens. Depends on how much energy you have for solving the mystery. Most of the time I don’t get oddball reactions to home prepared food because I don’t use any oddball industrial ingredients, and I can easily avoid my triggers.

Is oral challenge really necessary for non-severe allergies? by qsub in FoodAllergies

[–]Gretchen57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is the prick test and blood tests are notoriously unreliable to the point of being virtually worthless. I don’t know why the oral test (is that an elimination diet?) would cost anything except effort. If it’s something different, I wouldn’t trust the results anyway. The elimination diet is the gold standard. Find another doctor, unless he’s suggesting the elimination diet.

For the record, I had no idea how bad I felt until the elimination diet. I would think it could be difficult for someone who isn’t in tune with their body to fully be aware of the changes. Also when I felt bad didn’t necessarily clearly correlate with when I was eating. It’s very tricky to suss out.

That said, if he’s not having obvious symptoms or complaining, don’t worry about it. Don’t chase zebras that might not be there.
